A request for one small fix does not guarantee the delivered change contains only that fix. To review it safely, compare the request with the entire diff, assess every changed line in its surrounding context, and ask for a clearer or narrower change when the extra edits cannot be reviewed with confidence.
Why an extra edit can escape attention
In Serguey Asael Shinder’s DEV Community article, a reviewer asks for a missing check in a function. The returned file also renames a variable, reorders imports, rewrites an error message, and removes a guard. The small requested fix can become the mental label for the whole delivery, even though each additional edit is a separate decision. Shinder’s advice is: “Read the diff, never the reply.” Read the article on DEV Community.
The risks in that example are plausible, not measured outcomes: a removed guard might matter later, changed error text might no longer match support documentation, and a commit message might omit decisions that were actually made. The available sources do not quantify how often unsolicited edits are missed or cause defects; they also do not establish that every unrequested edit is harmful.
What a focused change should mean
Focus is not the same as a ban on all incidental cleanup. Google Engineering Practices recommends that a change, or CL, generally be self-contained and address one thing; smaller changes are easier to review thoroughly. Its guidance also leaves room for a small local cleanup to accompany a feature or bug fix, depending on the author’s and reviewer’s judgment. Google’s guidance on small CLs.

The practical distinction is whether the added work remains understandable and reviewable alongside the main purpose. A minor nearby rename may be easy to evaluate. A substantial refactor bundled with a behavior fix can obscure what changed and why, so separating the work may make each part easier to assess.
How to review the delivered change
- Restate the requested outcome. Identify the behavior or problem the change was supposed to address. Use the request as a scope reference, not as proof that the submitted work matches it.
- Inspect the full diff. Look at additions, deletions, and modifications across the change, including imports, messages, tests, and guards—not only the lines that appear to implement the request.
- Evaluate every changed line in context. Google’s reviewer guidance says, “In the general case, look at every line of code that you have been assigned to review.” Consider design, functionality, complexity, tests, naming, style, and documentation; inspect surrounding code or system context when needed. The diff records what changed, but context helps determine whether it makes sense. Google’s code-review guidance.
- Ask about unexplained scope. For each extra edit, establish its purpose and whether it is safe to assess as part of this change. If substantial unrelated work makes the behavior harder to evaluate, request a separate change or a clear explanation before approving.
- Check that the description matches the work. The change description should say what is changing and why. Google notes that a CL description becomes part of the project’s public history and can help future developers find and understand the decision. Google’s guidance on CL descriptions.
Focused change versus bundled change
| Review question | Focused, self-contained change | Change bundled with unrelated work |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | One main outcome is clear. | Several decisions may be mixed together. |
| Review | The reviewer can assess the intended behavior and its relevant context. | Extra edits can make it harder to see which changes support the request. |
| History | A description can explain the change and its reason directly. | A brief description may fail to capture all the decisions included. |
| Best next step | Review the full diff and verify behavior. | Clarify the rationale; split substantial unrelated work when that improves review. |
This is a judgment aid, not a rule that every extra line must be removed. Review the actual scope, rationale, behavior, and local conventions. A small cleanup can belong; an unexplained change that affects behavior deserves scrutiny.
