You can review a Copilot Actions task while it is running and take control of it, but Microsoft’s documentation does not describe a dedicated undo command for completed file changes. If Copilot has already changed a file, Windows File History may let you restore an earlier version—provided a backup exists. Preview that version or restore it to another location before replacing the current file.
First, identify which Copilot feature changed the file
Copilot Actions is the experimental Windows feature that can perform tasks directly on local files—for example, organizing Downloads, sorting photos, converting files, or extracting information from a PDF. Microsoft described it as a Windows Insider preview in its November 17, 2025 announcement. That announcement specified Copilot app version 1.25112.74 or higher and a gradual rollout across Insider Channels worldwide except the EEA; those are details of that dated rollout, not a guarantee of availability today.

Do not confuse Actions with Copilot file search. File search helps find, open, and ask questions about files; its access is managed under Account > Settings > File Search and File Read, according to Microsoft’s file search support page. PC insights is another separate feature: Microsoft says it requests permission before accessing relevant PC or file data and does not change settings, fix issues, or run troubleshooting automatically (PC insights documentation).
Review the task and take control while it is running
During a Copilot Actions task, Microsoft says you can check progress, review actions taken, or take over. Its Windows Insider announcement says: “At any time, you can take over the task or check in on the progress of the action, including reviewing what actions have been taken.” This lets you inspect work in progress, but it is not a documented rollback control.

If the task is doing something unexpected, take over or stop it, then inspect the files it touched. Taking control is not the same as restoring their previous contents. Before starting another task, review the agent’s file permissions.
Limit what an agent can access before another task
Microsoft’s Experimental agentic features support page documents per-agent access controls. In Windows Settings, open System > AI Components > Agents, select the agent, then review its Files section. The listed choices are Allow Always, Ask every time, and Never allow.

The documented known folders are Documents, Downloads, Desktop, Videos, Pictures, and Music. You can also turn off Experimental agentic features to limit access to those folders. Microsoft says the feature was off by default and available on preview builds 26100.7344 and later; controls may differ by preview build. For the setting path, use Settings > System > AI Components > Experimental agentic features.

File History is Windows’ personal-file backup and recovery feature, not an undo function built into Copilot Actions. Microsoft says it saves copies of personal files to an external drive or network location. Recovery is possible only if File History was configured to include the file and an earlier saved version is available (File History instructions).

Set up File History for future recovery
- Connect an external drive or configure a network location.
- Open Control Panel and go to System and Security > Save backup copies of your files with File History, then select Turn on.
- If the files you need are outside the folders already included, add their folders to a library.
Find and preview an earlier version
- In File Explorer, navigate to the folder that formerly contained the changed file.
- Right-click the folder and select Restore previous versions. For a file in a library, right-click the file or folder at its saved location rather than the library view.
- Select an available earlier version, then choose Open in File History to preview it.
- To preserve the current copy, expand Restore and select Restore to…, then choose another location.
Choosing Restore in place replaces the current file or folder. Microsoft warns that this replacement cannot itself be undone, so preview first or restore to a separate location if you are unsure.

| What you need | Use | What it does—and does not do |
|---|---|---|
| Inspect a task still in progress | Review progress or take over in Copilot Actions | Lets you check actions and intervene during execution; it is not a documented rollback for completed changes. |
| Recover an already changed personal file | File History | Restores an available saved version if the file was included in the backup; an in-place restore replaces the current copy. |
| Reduce or prompt for access on a future task | Agent file permissions in Settings | Controls future access to known folders; it does not restore files already changed. |
System Restore is not the normal way to undo a Copilot file edit. Microsoft distinguishes it from File History: System Restore uses restore points to revert Windows system files, registry settings, and installed programs, while File History addresses personal file versions (Windows recovery options).
