If a change is wrong, use the editor’s own undo or history controls, then verify the timeline and playback. Undo usually covers edits inside the project—not an exported file or an action taken by an external service.
What “undo” can—and cannot—undo
In an audio editor, Undo generally steps back through changes recorded in that project’s editing history. It is not a universal rollback for everything an agent may have done. Audacity’s manual describes Undo and Redo as controls for the current session’s edit history; making a new edit after undoing discards the undone steps. Audacity’s Edit menu documentation explains those controls.

That boundary matters when work leaves the editor. Do not assume Undo can retract an export you have shared, reverse an upload, or restore something changed by an external service unless that product explicitly documents such a feature. Visual Studio Code makes the same general distinction for coding agents: workspace checkpoints do not reverse terminal commands, network requests, deployments, or changes to external services. That is an analogy about agent side effects, not an audio-editor feature. See VS Code’s agent review guidance.

Make a recoverable project state before broad edits
Before asking an agent to make sweeping changes, preserve the source or create a separate project copy using the editor’s documented method. This is a workflow safeguard, not a claim that every editor offers a particular backup or version-history feature. It gives you another route back if the editor’s undo history is limited or an edit affects more material than intended.

Where an editor offers non-destructive processing, prefer it when it suits the task. Audacity distinguishes destructive effects, which rewrite audio, from real-time effects and clip gain, which leave the recording alone and can be adjusted or removed later. Its effect guidance explains the difference. Destructive effects are only undoable while the project remains open, so keeping an untouched source or recoverable project state is especially useful.
Review changes before accepting or exporting
- Ask for a plan first, if the tool supports it. ElevenLabs Studio documents a Plan mode that outlines an approach without changing the timeline. Its Create mode can edit the timeline, insert clips, generate media, apply overlays, and adjust audio. These are Studio-specific controls; confirm the current interface and availability in the ElevenLabs Studio documentation.
- Inspect the timeline after changes are applied. Check which clips and tracks changed, their placement, and whether surrounding material moved. Do not review only the agent’s summary or an isolated selection.
- Listen in context. Play the edited section and the audio immediately before and after it. Transitions and edit boundaries can reveal clicks, abrupt cuts, overlaps, timing shifts, or level changes that may not be obvious when listening to a selected clip alone.
- Check ripple behavior before and after gap-closing edits. In Audacity, closing a gap can move the selected clip, later clips on the same track, or clips across all tracks, depending on the ripple scope. Inspect the timeline for timing and synchronization changes, then listen around the edit. The Audacity Edit menu documentation describes these options.
- Export only after reviewing the current project. ElevenLabs says exports render the current chapter or project and that a later export includes updated media. Treat an export as a new rendered output: project Undo should not be presumed to change a file that has already been exported or shared.
How recovery differs by editor
| Editor or guidance | Review before applying | Undo and history | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Audacity | The cited documentation covers effects and timeline editing, not an AI-agent planning mode. | Undo and Redo step through the current session’s edit history. A new edit after undo discards the undone steps. Real-time effects and clip gain can be adjusted or removed without rewriting the recording. | Destructive effects rewrite audio and are only undoable while the project is open. Ripple edits may move clips on one track or all tracks. |
| ElevenLabs Studio | Plan mode outlines an approach without changing the timeline; Create mode can make timeline and audio changes. | Studio documents Undo/Redo. Narration generations have a separate generation history that can restore a generation. | Generation history does not cover imported media or video clips; a removed generation cannot be restored. The documentation does not establish that Undo reverses an already shared export or external action. |
| Visual Studio Code agent guidance | Recommends reviewing agent changes in diffs; this is general agent guidance, not an audio-editor feature. | Workspace checkpoints can restore affected workspace files. | Checkpoints do not reverse terminal commands, network requests, deployments, or external-service changes. |
Product controls and availability can change. For ElevenLabs-specific behavior, consult its Studio documentation; for Audacity, consult its Edit menu and effect guidance.

Undo a bad edit and verify the result
- Stop playback and use the editor’s Undo or history control to reverse the unwanted project change. In Audacity, Undo steps back through the current session; Redo moves forward again unless a new edit has discarded the undone steps.
- Check the timeline to confirm the intended clips, tracks, and timing have returned. If a ripple edit moved surrounding clips, verify their positions and synchronization too.
- Play the affected passage with its neighboring audio. A restored-looking timeline is not enough if the sound still contains the unwanted change.
- If the change is outside the editor’s documented history, recover from a saved project or source copy, or use the specific external service’s documented recovery method. Do not treat project Undo as a way to reverse external actions.
ElevenLabs documents Undo/Redo for Studio changes and a separate history for narration generations. That generation history does not track imported media or video clips, and a removed generation cannot be restored. Check the Studio documentation for the scope of those controls.
