Open the privacy settings for your macOS version
- macOS 13 or later: Choose Apple menu > System Settings, then select Privacy & Security in the sidebar. Apple’s Privacy & Security guide lists the available categories; the exact categories and options can vary by release.
- macOS 12 or earlier: Open System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy. Older macOS versions use different app names and labels, as described in Apple’s security documentation.
Choose a category to see the apps listed for it. Switch off an app’s access if it no longer needs that permission. You can later change how much you share, as Apple’s Mac privacy guide explains.

Which permissions should you review?
Camera and Microphone
In Privacy & Security > Camera or Microphone, review listed apps and disable any that do not need to capture video or audio. Apple’s guides explain camera access and microphone access. For microphone activity, the Recording Indicator in Control Centre shows when the microphone is in use or has been used recently.

Files & Folders
Check which locations an app can access, including Desktop, Documents, Downloads, network volumes, and removable volumes. Where options are available, turn off access for an individual location rather than removing the app’s access to everything. See Apple’s Files & Folders instructions.
Full Disk Access
Review this permission carefully: Apple defines Full Disk Access as access to all files, including data from other apps such as Mail, Messages, Safari, and Home, Time Machine backups, and some administrative settings. An app that needs only one folder may not need this broader permission.

Accessibility, Automation, and Input Monitoring
These permissions can let an app control or observe activity beyond its own window. Accessibility allows apps to run scripts and system commands to control the Mac; Apple advises granting it only to apps you know and trust. Review it at Privacy & Security > Accessibility and turn off access for apps that do not need it. See Apple’s Accessibility guidance.

Also check Automation for apps that control other apps and Input Monitoring for apps that monitor keyboard or pointing-device input. Consider whether the access fits the app’s purpose.

Screen & System Audio Recording
Review this category for apps that can record the screen or system audio. Revoke access if recording is not a feature you use or expect from the app.
Location and personal information
Review Location Services, Contacts, Calendars, Photos, Reminders, and other listed categories against what each app actually needs. Apple’s category guide describes the available controls.

What revoking a permission does—and does not do
macOS permissions control access through that permission going forward; turning one off does not delete information an app may already have collected or uploaded. For how a third-party app handles data it has received, review its privacy policy and terms. Apple’s camera, microphone, and Files & Folders guidance also recommends considering third-party privacy practices.
An app missing from a category list may simply never have requested that permission. For website camera access, use Safari’s separate controls: Safari > Settings > Websites > Camera. Website permissions are browser settings, not the same per-app controls used for native Mac apps.

A practical way to prioritize your audit
- Scope: Start with broad access such as Full Disk Access, then consider narrower folder-level access.
- Sensitivity: Pay particular attention to camera, microphone, screen recording, input monitoring, and controls such as Accessibility and Automation.
- Purpose: Ask whether the app’s stated function reasonably needs the access. This is a judgment about your own apps and use, not a blanket assessment of any particular developer.
