To review or delete connected-car data, work in three places: your automaker’s connected-service account, the car’s own privacy and infotainment settings, and any separate platform account signed into the vehicle. These controls do different jobs: an in-car reset can erase local profiles, while an account request is the route to ask the company to provide or delete data it holds. Exact menus and rights vary by make, model year, market, software, and services enabled.
Where your connected-car data may be stored
A car’s data is not necessarily held in one place. Depending on its equipment and services, information may be associated with an automaker account, stored in a driver profile in the vehicle, or linked to a separate account such as Google. Connected services may also rely on vehicle information sent to the manufacturer’s systems.

Start with the privacy notice for the specific connected service you use, rather than assuming the automaker’s general website policy covers every feature. Check the owner’s manual or manufacturer support page for your model year and infotainment system. Ford’s U.S. notice, for example, says the information involved depends on vehicle equipment, features, software version, settings, and services enabled: Ford U.S. Privacy Notice.

How to review and request deletion of automaker account data
- Sign in to the connected-service account. Look for privacy choices, data access or download, linked vehicles, and deletion-request options. The account may be separate from a general shopping or owner-support account.
- Review linked vehicles and available data categories. Note which vehicles are associated with you and what categories the company says it can provide. Save or download a copy if offered and useful.
- Submit the relevant privacy request. Request access or a portable copy if you want to inspect the data; request deletion if that is your goal. Follow the company’s identity-verification process and keep the confirmation.
- Check the outcome. Review the account afterward for linked vehicles or categories that remain visible. A company may retain some records where law allows or requires it, so a request is not necessarily confirmation that every record has been erased.
For a U.S. example, General Motors says consumers covered by its U.S. Consumer Privacy Statement can request access and a portable copy, correction, and deletion. GM says an access response can identify vehicles associated with someone as an owner or account holder and categories such as driving behavior, geolocation, and vehicle information. It says some requests may take up to 45 days, and submitted information may be retained as law requires or permits. This timeline and these rights describe GM’s statement, not a universal industry rule.

How to change data sharing and unlink the vehicle
Use the vehicle’s privacy, location, connectivity, or service settings to review what it shares. Also check the manufacturer’s connected-service account for controls and linked vehicles. Removing the car from an account is not necessarily the same as turning off every in-car transmission setting.
Follow the brand’s instructions for unlinking the vehicle, including action on every account associated with it when required. Ford says removing a vehicle from all associated accounts is necessary to remove remote access and stop related connected-vehicle information access or transmission; deleting the phone app alone does not disable sharing. Ford’s notice states: “Deleting the Ford/Lincoln app from your device without also performing a MASTER/FACTORY RESET will not disable data sharing from the vehicle.” That instruction is Ford-specific; consult the manual for the exact vehicle before resetting it.

BMW describes privacy controls in the vehicle, MyBMW app, and online profile. Its “No services” setting stops transmission to BMW’s backend, but BMW identifies legally required eCall as an exception in an accident. If Google built-in is available and a Google Account is signed in, Google’s controls address Google Account activity and data in the car’s infotainment system. Depending on the vehicle, the available actions include managing saved activity in car settings or My Activity, removing the account, deleting the profile, erasing all infotainment data, and turning usage and diagnostics sharing on or off. Google’s Google built-in help also warns that data sent over a manufacturer-provided network may be governed by the manufacturer’s practices. Removing Google data therefore does not establish that automaker-held records were deleted.

Before selling, transferring, or returning the car
Use the vehicle-specific manual and manufacturer instructions to remove personal information and disconnect your accounts. Depending on the vehicle, the steps may include:
- Removing driver profiles and signed-in accounts.
- Deleting paired phones and saved personal information where the manual allows.
- Removing the vehicle identification number (VIN) from every connected-service account associated with the car.
- Performing the appropriate factory, master, or connectivity reset if instructed for that vehicle.
Ford recommends a reset when someone no longer plans to use the vehicle or sells it. Tesla’s Customer Privacy Notice, updated February 2026, also points to a factory reset and removal of personal data before transfer. Tesla describes its own data practices, including that driving-generated vehicle data is not associated with identity or account by default and that camera-data sharing has consent controls; do not assume those details apply to other automakers. A reset clears local vehicle information as described by the manufacturer, but it is not proof that server-side account records have been deleted.

What changes when you limit sharing
Turning off data transmission can also turn off features that depend on connectivity. Ford says services requiring vehicle information may not function correctly or be available when that information is withheld. Before disabling a setting, check which app, remote, navigation, support, or other connected functions depend on it. Emergency functions may have separate requirements: BMW says its “No services” setting does not prevent legally required eCall transmission in an accident.

Access, deletion, opt-out, retention, and identity-verification rules vary by jurisdiction. The Ford and GM examples above concern U.S. notices; BMW’s information refers to European data protection law. Do not assume a procedure or legal right described for one market applies in another. Use the privacy notice for your country and the connected service actually enabled in your vehicle.
