You can review or change Claude privacy settings, stop past chats from appearing in search, export your data, delete conversations, or delete your account—but these are separate actions, and some controls depend on your plan and role. For the model-improvement choice, check the live Settings interface: Anthropic’s help material confirms the control exists but does not establish its exact current menu path or label.

Anthropic says, “You maintain full control and can adjust your privacy settings at any time.” That statement appears in its consumer help article about sensitive data and conversation access. The particular setting and the action you take still matter: exporting data does not delete it, and deleting a chat is not the same as deleting your account.

How do I change whether my chats help improve Claude?
Anthropic says consumer users can adjust privacy and model-improvement settings. Its help material reviewed here does not establish the exact current menu path or the control’s precise label, so do not rely on an assumed toggle name. Open your Claude account’s Settings and read the current privacy controls before changing the choice.
Anthropic says that when users allow chats or coding sessions to help improve Claude, it removes the user ID from data before review and limits access to a small number of personnel involved in model training. Anthropic also says safety-classifier-flagged conversations may still be used for certain internal trust-and-safety purposes, including improving internal safety models, detecting harmful content, enforcing policies, or safety research. Changing the model-improvement choice should therefore not be read as a guarantee that every conversation is unavailable for every internal safety use. Anthropic advises care before entering financial identifiers or account details, health records, passwords, and confidential documents into chats.
How do I stop Claude from searching my past chats?
If past-chat search is available on your account, go to Settings > Profile > Preferences and turn off Search and reference chats. Anthropic says the feature is rolling out to Max, Team, and Enterprise users and is enabled by default when it reaches an account. If you do not see the preference, the feature may not yet be available to your account.

Anthropic describes past-chat search as a way to find earlier discussions. Its examples include asking, “What did we discuss about [topic]?”, “Can you find our conversation about [subject]?”, or “Let’s continue where we left off with [project].” Turning off the preference disables this search behavior; to make sure one particular old chat is excluded from conversation search, Anthropic’s current guidance is to delete that chat. How do I delete a Claude conversation?
Delete one conversation
- Open the conversation you want to remove.
- Select the conversation’s title.
- Choose Delete.
Delete several conversations
- Open Chats history.
- Select the conversations you want to remove.
- Choose Delete Selected.

How do I export my Claude data?
An export gives you a copy; it does not delete conversations or close your account. The route depends on account type and role. Individual Free, Pro, and Max users and Team Primary Owners can request an export on the web app or Claude Desktop. Enterprise exports are available to Enterprise Primary Owners through a different menu. Claude mobile apps cannot initiate an export.

The export includes conversation data and account user information. Anthropic says it emails a download link after processing; a short wait may be needed. You must be signed in to download, and the link expires 24 hours after delivery. You can request a fresh export to generate a new link. How do I delete my entire Claude account?
Account deletion is separate from deleting conversations. The documented route starts at your initials or name, then Settings > Account. Anthropic says deletion is permanent and saved chats will no longer be accessible. If you want to keep a copy of account data, request an export before proceeding.
For a paid Pro or Max account, Anthropic advises canceling the subscription in Billing and waiting until the current subscription period ends before deleting the account. Follow Anthropic’s account-deletion instructions for the applicable steps.

What changes for Claude Team and Enterprise?
Work accounts are governed differently from individual consumer accounts. Anthropic says the customer organization controls data users submit and may access and export it; Anthropic processes that data to provide the service under the commercial arrangement described in its help material. Anthropic also says it does not use Claude for Work data to train generative models. Users should check their organization’s policies and ask its administrator which controls apply. Organization-level powers depend on role. Team and Enterprise Primary Owners can request data exports. Enterprise Owners and Primary Owners can request audit logs and manage data-retention controls and feedback settings. A regular member should not assume they can change these organization-wide settings. Anthropic describes the roles in its Claude for Work roles and permissions guide.
