ChatGPT’s privacy controls do different jobs: turning off model improvement affects eligible new conversations, Memory controls personalization, and deleting a chat removes that conversation from your account view. To review them, open Settings and check Data controls and Personalization. What you can change depends on whether you use a personal account or a managed workspace, as well as your plan, region, and platform.
Know which control addresses your goal
Before changing a setting, identify what you want to affect. Model improvement, saved chat history, Memory, temporary chats, and data export or deletion are separate controls; changing one does not automatically change the others.

Turn off model improvement without deleting chat history
- In ChatGPT, open Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Switch off Improve the model for everyone.
The change applies across devices for your signed-in account and affects new conversations and tasks covered by the setting. Your existing saved chats remain in history. If you submit explicit product feedback, the conversation associated with that feedback may be used to improve models even if you have opted out.

Choose Temporary Chat when starting the conversation. Temporary chats do not appear in your history or create or update Memory, and are not used for model improvement while they remain temporary. They are not necessarily erased immediately: OpenAI may retain a copy for safety for up to 30 days. If you save a temporary chat, it becomes a regular chat and follows your account’s personalization and model-improvement settings.

Review or remove personalization Memory
- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization.
- Review the Memory controls and sources available in your account, then change or remove the relevant saved memory.
Memory is separate from model-improvement preferences. To remove something ChatGPT remembers, you may need to delete both the saved memory and the conversation where it originated; deleting only the chat can leave the memory in place. Memory controls and labels may vary by plan, region, and workspace.
Export your data or remove chats
Request a data export
Eligible signed-in personal Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users can request a data copy through Settings or the Privacy Portal. If you use a managed workspace, ask the workspace owner whether exports are available; an administrator may control that option.

Archive or delete a conversation
Archiving keeps a chat but moves it out of the main list. Deleting removes it from your account view and schedules permanent deletion, subject to applicable exceptions. Deleted chats cannot be restored. If a file is saved separately in Library, or information is saved as a Memory, remove those items separately when you want them deleted too.
Check who manages your account
Personal accounts and organization-managed workspaces can expose different settings and data routes. Business and other managed workspaces have default exclusions from model training, but organization policy may govern access, retention, and which controls users can change. If a setting is missing or unavailable, check the current labels in your account or contact the workspace administrator rather than assuming the personal-account procedure applies.
