Choose the right screen for the job
Android offers several ways to manage app access. They answer different questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- App permissions: What can this one app access, and what should I change?
- Permission manager: Which apps have access to a particular category, such as the camera or contacts?
- Privacy dashboard: Which apps used a permission recently?
- Privacy controls: Should camera or microphone access be switched off for the whole device?
For Google’s documented paths and permission options, see Change app permissions on your Android phone. The wording and availability of settings can differ across phones.

A useful order for a privacy check is to review recent activity in Privacy dashboard, use Permission manager to compare the apps that have a permission, and then open an individual app’s page to make a change. You do not have to follow that order, however: each route can be used on its own, depending on what you are trying to find out.
Change permissions for one app
This is the quickest route if you already know which app you want to check. Google’s general path is Settings → Apps → [app] → Permissions.
- Open Settings and tap Apps.
- Select the app. If it is not listed, tap See all apps first, then choose it.
- Tap Permissions to review the access granted or denied.
- Select a permission, then choose one of the options shown for that permission on your phone.
Review permissions in terms of what the app does. For example, a map app may need location while you navigate, while a feature that does not use the camera may not need camera access. If you deny something the app relies on, that feature may not work or the app may ask again when you use it.

Before changing anything, make sure you have opened the intended app. The app page is the focused, one-app view: it lets you review that app’s permissions without changing access for other apps. If several apps concern you, repeat the process for each one, or use Permission manager to get a category-wide view first.
On the Permissions page, consider each permission separately rather than treating the list as one all-or-nothing choice. Ask what feature uses it and whether you want that feature to work. An app can have one permission allowed and another denied; changing one does not require changing the rest. Choose from the options displayed on your phone, since the available choices depend on the permission and device.
If a feature stops working after you deny access, that is a practical sign that the feature depends on the permission. You can return to the same page and select a less restrictive option if you want to use that feature. You do not need to grant unrelated permissions simply because one feature needs a particular kind of access.
Audit access across apps with Permission manager
Use Permission manager when you want to inspect one type of access across multiple apps—for example, to find every app with microphone access. Google documents this route: Settings → Security & Privacy (or Privacy) → Privacy → Permission manager. The exact labels and nesting may differ by device.

- Open Privacy, then tap Permission manager. If you do not see that label, search Settings for “Permission manager” or “Permissions.”
- Choose a permission category to view the apps associated with it.
- Select an app and change its setting using the available choices.
Categories may include location, camera, microphone, contacts, photos and videos, notifications, nearby devices, and files. The available categories and their names can vary across Android versions. Permission manager is a category-based control view; it is not the same as the Privacy dashboard, which is for reviewing recent activity.
Think of this as an audit across one kind of access at a time. To check microphone access, select the microphone category and review the apps shown there. To check location, choose location instead. This makes it easier to notice an app you do not expect in a particular category, while keeping the review focused on one permission type rather than mixing unrelated access together.
When you find an app in a category, select it to see or change its setting. A category list is not a reason to revoke access automatically: consider whether the app uses that permission for a feature you want. If you decide to change it, the options available on the app’s setting page determine what you can choose. You can review another category afterward without changing the first one.
Permission manager is useful when you do not know which app to inspect first. The individual app page is more direct when you already know the app. Both let you review and change permissions, but their starting points differ: one starts with an app, while the other starts with a permission category.

Check which apps used a permission recently
The Privacy dashboard helps answer whether an app has recently accessed a permission. Open it from Settings → Security & Privacy (or Privacy) → Privacy → Privacy dashboard, then select a permission to see the apps that accessed it. Select an app from the results if you want to review or update its access. Google’s instructions are in Manage permissions from the privacy dashboard.
The dashboard’s documented lookback period depends on Android version: Google describes seven days of activity on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. These are version-specific details, not a promise that every Android phone shows the same period.
The dashboard answers a different question from Permission manager. A recent-access view helps you see which apps accessed a selected permission during the period shown; the category-based manager helps you see and change which apps have that permission. Recent use is not the same as a complete list of all current grants, and a category list is not a record of when an app used access. Use the screen that matches the question you have.
To follow up on an entry, select the permission in the dashboard and then select the app shown. Review its access and change it if needed. If an app is not listed in recent activity, that alone does not tell you whether it currently has permission; use Permission manager or the app’s Permissions page to inspect its setting. The time range shown also matters, because Android 13 and Android 12 have different documented dashboard periods.
Choose how much access to allow
Pick the least access that still lets the app perform the function you need. The available choices depend on the permission, Android version, and device. Do not assume every permission has every option.
- Allow while using the app: Where offered, this limits access to times when you are actively using the app.
- Ask every time: Where offered, the app must request access again for each use.
- Don’t allow: Denies that permission. Features that depend on it may stop working.
- Allow all the time: This is a location option on supported devices and app flows, not a universal setting for all permissions.
If you are unsure, start with a more limited option and see whether the relevant feature still works. You can return to the app’s Permissions page or Permission manager to change the choice.
These choices describe different amounts or timing of access, not a single scale that applies identically to every category. “Allow all the time” is relevant to location on supported devices and app flows; it should not be expected for camera, microphone, or every other permission. Likewise, “Ask every time” and “Allow while using the app” appear only where the permission and device offer them.
A practical way to decide is to name the feature you want to use, then ask when it needs access. If it only needs access while you are using the app, choose that limited option when it is available. If you do not want the app to have access, deny it and see whether the app still meets your needs. If the feature does not work, revisit the setting and adjust only that permission rather than opening access more broadly than necessary.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Some apps may ask again when you use a feature after access has been denied. That request gives you another opportunity to decide whether to allow access for the task. You can also leave access denied if you do not want to use that feature. The point is to match the choice to the function, not to approve every request automatically.
Limit location access and precision
Location settings can control both when an app gets location and, on supported devices and app flows, how precise that location is. Options may include all the time, while using the app, ask every time, or don’t allow. Some settings also let you turn off precise location while keeping approximate location. See Google’s Manage location permissions for apps for its guidance.
Consider whether the feature needs ongoing or precise location. Navigation during a trip may need current location while in use; a feature that only needs a general area may work with approximate location if that choice is available. If an app’s function fails after you change the setting, revisit its permission options and allow only the level of access needed for that feature.

Timing and precision are separate considerations. A setting that limits access to while you use an app addresses when it can access location. Turning off precise location, where supported, keeps approximate location available while reducing precision. Check the choices shown on your phone: not every app flow or device provides the same location options.
For a location review, first decide whether the app needs location at all. If it does, consider whether its function requires access outside active use or needs precise rather than approximate location. Then select the least access level that supports that function. For example, navigation while you are using it is different from a feature that only needs a general area; the appropriate choice depends on the feature and the options available.
Turn off camera or microphone access for the whole device
Individual app permissions control one app at a time. Android also provides device-wide camera and microphone access controls. Google documents them under Settings → Security & Privacy → Privacy → Privacy controls; wording can vary by phone. Use these broad controls when you want to block camera or microphone access across apps, rather than changing each app separately.
A device-wide switch affects more than one app, so it may prevent features you rely on from using the camera or microphone. If only one app is a concern, change that app’s permission instead.
Choose the scope deliberately. If you want to stop a particular app from using the camera, its app-permissions page is the narrower control. If you want camera access unavailable across apps, use the device-wide camera control. The same distinction applies to microphone access. A broad control is not a substitute for a one-app setting when your concern is limited to that app.
After turning off a device-wide control, a camera- or microphone-dependent feature may not work until access is restored. If that is not what you intended, turn the broad control back on and adjust the individual app permission instead. Menu wording and availability can differ by phone, so search Settings for Privacy controls if the documented path does not match your screen.
Be cautious with restricted settings
A prompt to enable a restricted setting is different from an ordinary camera, location, or contacts permission. Google warns that harmful apps may ask for risky settings. Accessibility access, for example, can let an app read screen content and interact with apps on your behalf. Google’s guidance is direct: “We don’t recommend that you allow restricted settings unless you trust the app developer.” Read Learn about restricted settings before granting an unfamiliar app this kind of access.
Do not treat a request for a restricted setting as a routine step just because an app displays it. Consider whether you recognize and trust the app developer and whether you understand why the app needs that access. If the request is unexpected or unexplained, do not enable it until you are comfortable with the app and the purpose of the setting. This caution is especially important for accessibility access because it can expose screen content and allow interaction on your behalf.
This is a different decision from choosing whether an app can use a standard permission such as location or microphone. Restricted settings deserve particular scrutiny; Google advises allowing them only when you trust the developer.

Android manufacturers can arrange Settings differently, and menu names or available options can vary by device and version. Try these steps:
- Search Settings for Permissions or Permission manager.
- For a known app, open Settings → Apps, select the app, and look for Permissions.
- Check which Android version your phone runs if a feature or option described above is missing.
- Consult your phone manufacturer’s support instructions if the setting is still difficult to locate.
Google notes that permission settings and feature availability vary across devices; its app-permissions guide is the reference for its general path.

A missing label does not necessarily mean your phone lacks permission controls. Try the Settings search before assuming a feature is unavailable. Search for “Permissions” to locate the app-specific settings, or “Permission manager” to look for the category-based screen. If you are following the dashboard route, search for “Privacy dashboard” as well.
If a guide describes a choice that does not appear, check the Android version and remember that permission options vary by device and permission. Do not substitute a different setting without understanding its scope. In particular, distinguish an individual app’s permission from the device-wide camera or microphone controls, and distinguish recent activity in Privacy dashboard from the category view in Permission manager. When the menus remain unclear, consult the phone manufacturer’s instructions.
