Review an AI-generated Linux kernel patch exactly as you would any other proposed change—then add explicit checks for provenance, reproducibility, threat-model claims, and disclosure. Start by recording the base commit, understand the complete execution path, prove that the stated bug exists, test the proposed fix, and report only effects you can substantiate. AI authorship is not evidence that a patch is either unsafe or correct.
This workflow follows the Linux kernel project’s guidance for tool-generated content, AI coding assistants, patch submission, security bugs, and researcher reports. It is intended for reviewers and submitters working against a current mainline tree; subsystem-specific requirements still take precedence.

1. Establish exactly what you are reviewing
Do not begin with the changed lines alone. Create a review record containing the repository, branch or release, base commit, proposed commit ID (if one exists), and the complete patch as tested. The AI Coding Assistants guidance expects work to use an up-to-date mainline tree and to record the commit. A line that looks harmless on one release can have different callers, locking, or data structures on another.
Capture provenance without treating it as a verdict
Ask the submitter which assistant or other tool produced a meaningful portion of the code, what prompts or prompt summary were used, which files or functions were affected, and what a human changed afterward. Provenance tells you where to ask additional questions; it does not establish a defect. A human submitter must understand and be able to defend the entire contribution.

Collect the surrounding material
- The patch description and stated problem.
- Relevant subsystem documentation and the current
MAINTAINERSentry. - Callers, callees, error paths, Kconfig dependencies, and user-visible interfaces touched by the change.
- Existing tests, reports, traces, or a reproducer that support the claimed behavior.
Keep the review tied to the exact tree and configuration. Keyword-search fragments or an isolated AI explanation are not enough context for a kernel decision.
2. Confirm that the patch addresses a real problem
Before judging the fix, restate the defect in observable terms. What behavior is wrong? Which code path can a running system take to reach it? What effect can a user, device, or attacker observe? Which evidence supports the claim? A useful patch description explains the discovery method and tools, affected versions, fix rationale, and build or runtime testing.
Build a minimal reachability chain
- Identify the entry point: a system call, ioctl, filesystem operation, driver event, network packet, workqueue, interrupt, or internal caller.
- Trace the conditions required to reach the changed code, including configuration symbols, capabilities, namespaces, hardware, and object state.
- Follow the data and control flow to the claimed failure. Record the input, state transition, and observable result.
- Check whether an existing guard, reference, lock, or validation step already prevents the alleged outcome.
Do not convert a theoretical consequence into a confirmed bug. If the path cannot be reached under the stated conditions, say so and ask for a corrected claim or a different reproducer.
Reproduce or disclose the limit
For a nontrivial bug, attempt a reproducer before accepting the diagnosis. Save the kernel configuration, architecture, compiler and tool versions, workload, and observed result. Re-run the reproducer after applying the proposed fix. If reproduction is infeasible, document why—for example, unavailable hardware, a race that has not recurred, or an incomplete report—and label the finding as unverified rather than factual.
3. Read the complete change in context
Once the problem is credible, review every hunk and its execution context. AI output often compiles while violating an invariant that is expressed in a distant caller, teardown path, or configuration combination.
Trace callers, returns, and failures
For each changed function, inspect all callers and all return paths. Check how errors are propagated, whether partial work is rolled back, and whether a retry or asynchronous callback can observe intermediate state. Follow both the normal and exceptional paths, including allocation failure, device removal, signal interruption, timeout, and cancellation.
Check kernel invariants
- Locking and concurrency: Is the same lock held on every access? Could an interrupt, workqueue, RCU reader, or another CPU race with the change? Does the patch preserve required memory ordering?
- Lifetime and references: Can an object be freed, refcounted, or detached while the new code still uses it? Are get/put, pin/unpin, and RCU grace-period rules balanced?
- Bounds and types: Are lengths, indexes, shifts, signedness, endian conversions, and user-controlled values validated before use? Could an integer conversion truncate or wrap?
- Configuration: Does the code build and behave correctly across relevant Kconfig combinations, optional subsystems, modular versus built-in forms, and architecture-specific definitions?
- Interfaces: Does the change alter an ioctl, sysfs attribute, netlink message, filesystem format, ABI, or error code? If so, are compatibility and documentation handled?
Demand a coherent logical patch
Each patch should represent one understandable change that can be independently justified and verified. If an AI-generated commit mixes a bug fix with refactoring, formatting, or unrelated cleanup, ask for separate commits or a narrower revision. Smaller logical units make review, bisection, backporting, and security assessment defensible.

Verify the mechanism of the fix
- Does the changed condition actually execute before the bad operation?
- Does it cover every entry point and equivalent representation of the problematic state?
- Does it preserve required ordering, locking, reference ownership, and cleanup?
- Does it return an error that callers understand, rather than silently changing semantics?
- Does it avoid masking the symptom while leaving corrupted state or a later use-after-free?
Look for regressions and compatibility damage
Run through successful, failing, boundary, repeated, concurrent, and teardown cases. Consider old userspace, mixed-version clusters, firmware expectations, and architectures with different word sizes or alignment rules when those apply. A security fix that rejects legitimate operations can be unacceptable even when it blocks the original input.
Check documentation and tests affected by the change
Update or add a focused test when the subsystem has a suitable test framework. Ensure comments describe an invariant rather than merely repeating the code. If an interface or behavior changes intentionally, update the relevant documentation and explain the compatibility impact in the commit message.
5. Apply a kernel-specific security analysis
Classify a security concern only after establishing a plausible threat path under the Linux kernel threat model. AI-assisted reports can overstate impact or invent consequences that are not reachable. Use precise language such as “an unprivileged process with capability X can trigger a kernel warning” only when the conditions and effect are demonstrated.
Separate trigger, impact, and preconditions
- Trigger: Specify the input or event and the interface that accepts it.
- Preconditions: State required privileges, namespaces, devices, configuration symbols, timing, and object state.
- Effect: Describe the observed result—crash, information exposure, denial of service, memory corruption, or other behavior—without escalating it to privilege escalation unless that outcome is established.
- Reliability: Explain whether the result is deterministic, probabilistic, or only hypothesized.
Include the affected version or commit, a concise description, reproducer status, and trigger conditions in a security report. The official security process also expects a tested fix with a Fixes: tag when appropriate. A final vulnerability-versus-regular-bug determination should be reviewed by the reporter; do not let an assistant make that classification by itself.
Keep security communication private when required
Send a genuine exploitable vulnerability through the kernel’s documented security reporting email path and remain available for follow-up. Do not post a speculative vulnerability claim to broad public lists. Ordinary bugs belong in the normal patch process, with the subsystem maintainers and lists identified from the relevant tree and MAINTAINERS.
6. Build a verification matrix that matches the patch
There is no universal command list that proves a kernel patch correct. Select checks based on the subsystem, changed interfaces, supported architectures, and failure mode, and record what you actually ran.
| Evidence source | What it can establish | Limits and reviewer action |
|---|---|---|
| Reproducer before and after the fix | Whether the demonstrated path and symptom change under stated conditions | One workload may miss races, configurations, or alternate entry points; inspect the complete path. |
| Configuration builds | Compilation and integration across relevant Kconfig choices | A successful build does not prove runtime or concurrency correctness; include affected architectures where practical. |
| Runtime tests with debugging options | Evidence about memory, locking, race, and assertion failures during exercised workloads | Absence of a report is not proof that an unexercised path is safe. |
scripts/checkpatch.pl |
Style and common submission issues | The submission guide calls it a guide, not a replacement for human judgment. Investigate findings and explain intentional exceptions. |
| Sparse, checkstack, static analysis, and fault injection | Additional type, stack, and injected-failure evidence where applicable | Choose tools that understand the subsystem; tool output needs interpretation and does not replace review. |
| Compiler warnings | Signals of type, API, or build problems | Record compiler and tool versions and ensure the proposed fix adds no warnings in tested configurations. |
Record commands and results
Include exact commands, configuration names, architecture, compiler and tool versions, test workload, and pass or failure results in the patch description or review record. For example, run scripts/checkpatch.pl against the patch and use scripts/get_maintainer.pl to identify the appropriate recipients. Do not claim that sparse, checkstack, fault injection, or a runtime test was performed unless it actually was.
Use failure evidence constructively
A warning, sanitizer report, failed build, or flaky reproducer is a new review fact. Preserve the log, reduce the workload if possible, identify the first failing path, and ask whether the patch exposed an existing defect or introduced one. A clean run narrows uncertainty; it does not erase an unresolved design contradiction.

7. Compare alternative fixes on consistent axes
When two patches address the same demonstrated issue, evaluate them against the same evidence rather than choosing the shorter diff or the one that an assistant explains more confidently.
| Axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Coverage | Does the candidate fix the reproducer and every affected entry path, including equivalent callers and teardown? |
| Regression and compatibility risk | What valid behavior, ABI, performance characteristic, or supported configuration could change? |
| Verification | Which builds, architectures, runtime tests, debugging options, and fault-injection cases cover the changed assumptions? |
| Clarity and maintenance | Can a future maintainer understand the invariant, error handling, and reason for the change without relying on an AI transcript? |
| Security handling | Is the impact accurately classified, and is the patch being sent through the correct private or public route? |
Prefer the candidate whose behavior is demonstrably correct and whose assumptions are easiest to audit, not merely the one with fewer lines.
8. Meet the disclosure and responsibility rules for tool-generated code
The Linux kernel’s tool-generated-content guidance applies when a meaningful amount of a contribution was created by a tool, including code later cleaned up by a person. Disclosure should identify the tools used, prompts or a summary of them, affected portions, and how the submission was tested. The submitter remains accountable for every line.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute“You are expected to understand and to be able to defend everything you submit.”
Linux kernel development community, Kernel Guidelines for Tool-Generated Content
The same guidance asks contributors to explain: “How is the submission tested and what tools were used to test the fix?” Answer that with concrete commands and results, not a statement that an assistant reviewed its own output. Maintainers may request additional scrutiny, a narrower patch, or a fuller explanation, and can decide whether the disclosure is sufficient.
9. Route the change to the right maintainers
Use the relevant source tree and MAINTAINERS file to identify subsystem maintainers and mailing lists. scripts/get_maintainer.pl can help generate a recipient list, but review the result for the files and subsystem actually changed.
For a regular bug or improvement
Follow the ordinary submission process: a focused commit, complete problem and fix rationale, testing details, tool-assistance disclosure, and appropriate recipients. Keep each patch independently verifiable and respond to maintainer questions with evidence from the exact base commit.

11. Common review failures and how to correct them
Judging a snippet in isolation
Symptom: The changed conditional looks sensible, but a caller already guarantees a different invariant or a teardown path races with it.
Correction: Start again from the base commit and trace all callers, state owners, locks, and failure paths before commenting on the hunk.

Accepting a plausible security story
Symptom: The report labels a theoretical memory issue as privilege escalation without a reachable trigger or observed effect.
Correction: Separate preconditions from impact, run or request a reproducer, and use “unverified” until evidence supports a stronger claim.
Treating tools as an oracle
Symptom: Checkpatch is clean or a static analyzer is quiet, so the patch is declared correct.
Correction: Use tools as evidence about the properties they check, then perform behavioral, concurrency, configuration, and interface review.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does AI-generated code require a different technical standard?
No. The kernel still requires ordinary correctness, security, testing, and maintainer review. AI assistance adds provenance and disclosure duties, not a shortcut or an automatic presumption of failure.
What if I cannot reproduce the reported bug?
Document the environment and attempts, state that the defect remains unverified, and avoid presenting a hypothesis as a confirmed vulnerability. Continue with contextual code review and request the missing trigger information.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Which tool proves a kernel patch is safe?
None. Checkpatch, sparse, checkstack, builds, sanitizers, runtime tests, and fault injection each provide limited evidence. Human review must connect those results to the patch’s actual invariants and threat path.
Where should a suspected exploitable flaw be sent?
Use the Linux kernel project’s documented security reporting email process for a plausible vulnerability, with affected version or commit, trigger conditions, reproducer status, observed impact, and tested-fix information. Do not send an unsupported claim to broad public lists.
