How to Review a Bank Statement for Suspicious Charges Without Sharing Your Login

Check every statement entry against your own records, then report anything that still appears unauthorized through your bank’s independently verified contact channels. Keep passwords and verification codes private.

You can check for suspicious bank activity using a paper statement or your bank’s official app or website; nobody else needs your banking password or verification code to review it. Compare unfamiliar entries with your own records, then contact the bank or credit union through a number or channel you find independently if a transaction still appears unauthorized.

Review the statement yourself

Use a paper statement or sign in directly through your financial institution’s official app or website. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) advises consumers to monitor statements and digital banking information for unauthorized transactions and errors. You do not need to give a third-party service your login to carry out this check. Before sharing financial data with any service, consider what it can access, how the data is used or stored, whether it can move money, and how to stop access or request deletion where available. How to check entries that look unfamiliar

  1. Scan every transaction. Review dates, amounts, and merchant descriptions, including small charges and withdrawals.
  2. Compare each unclear entry with your records. Check receipts, subscriptions, travel, and purchases you or an authorized account user may have made. A merchant may appear under a name you do not immediately recognize.
  3. Investigate rather than assume. An unfamiliar description is not proof of fraud, but it merits a closer look. The CFPB notes that thieves sometimes make a small debit or charge before attempting more. CFPB advice on watching accounts closely

What to do if a transaction still seems unauthorized

  1. Contact your bank or credit union promptly. Use the phone number printed on your statement or card, or contact the institution through its official app or website. Ask how to report and dispute the transaction.
  2. Keep a record. Note when you contacted the institution, whom you spoke with, any reference number, and what you were asked to do. Keep copies of written communications.
  3. Ask about account security. If a debit card or electronic transfer may be involved, ask whether you should secure or replace the card and whether changing the debit-card PIN is appropriate. The right steps depend on what was compromised.

Protect your login and verification codes

Do not give your password, account details, or one-time verification code to someone who contacts you unexpectedly. Do not transfer or withdraw money because a caller says it will protect your funds. End the call and reach your institution using contact information on your statement or card, or its official app or website. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that a caller claiming to be from a bank’s fraud department may be a scammer and says to verify the claim independently. Deadlines depend on the type of transaction

For an unauthorized electronic fund transfer shown on an account statement, the CFPB says to notify the bank or credit union within 60 days after it sends the statement. Waiting may affect responsibility for later transfers, depending on the circumstances. Do not treat 60 days as a safe period to wait: report a suspected problem as soon as you can.

For applicable electronic-transfer error procedures, the CFPB says the institution generally has 10 business days after notice to investigate. If it determines an error occurred, it must correct it within one business day; it then has three business days to report its findings. These timeframes describe particular electronic-transfer procedures, not a guaranteed timeline for every suspicious charge or dispute. Read the CFPB’s guidance on unauthorized transactions and missing money, last reviewed August 28, 2026.

Lost or stolen debit cards, or a stolen PIN or security code, can involve different timing and liability rules. Unauthorized checks can also be treated differently depending on whether a check was processed electronically; state law may govern some non-electronic checks. Contact your institution promptly and use the CFPB’s guidance for the transaction type rather than applying one deadline to every case. CFPB guidance on unauthorized checks
