You can reuse a YouTube stream key by creating a custom key in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, then selecting it in your encoder whenever you connect to a scheduled broadcast. The key is a reusable encoder credential—not a permanent scheduled event. Schedule each broadcast separately from the Manage tab.
What a persistent stream key does—and doesn’t do
YouTube describes a stream key as the credential that tells your encoder where to send its feed and lets YouTube accept it. Create a custom stream key if you want to reuse the same key. Keep it private: anyone with access to it may be able to send content to the associated stream. A key does not schedule a broadcast or make one scheduled event permanent. Create a custom stream key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live to open Live Control Room.
- Open the Stream tab.
- Select Select stream key → Create new stream key, then create a custom key.
- Copy and store the key securely. Enter it in the stream-key field of the encoder you plan to use.
YouTube’s interface labels may vary. The key’s reusable role remains separate from the event-scheduling step.

Schedule a broadcast and connect the encoder
- In Live Control Room, open Manage and select Schedule stream.
- Choose Reuse settings to copy the previous stream’s metadata, settings, and key, or choose Create new for a fresh setup. You can change reused settings after creating the new stream.
- At broadcast time, enter YouTube’s stream URL in your encoder’s server or RTMP field, and enter the selected stream key in its key field. The key alone is not enough; the encoder needs both the URL and key.
- Start the encoder. Wait until the incoming feed appears in Live Control Room’s preview, check that it looks and sounds right, then click Go live.
- When finished, end the broadcast in YouTube, then stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
Choose between creating a new stream and reusing settings

For recurring broadcasts, the custom key is what lets you reuse the encoder credential; Reuse settings is an optional scheduling shortcut. In either case, create or select the broadcast under Manage.

Preflight the scheduled stream
- YouTube recommends setting up the encoder at least 2 hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. These are preparation intervals, not instructions to make the audience-facing broadcast live early. YouTube Help: Streaming tips
- Test your setup in advance and confirm viewers can access the event from the channel and watch pages. Use an appropriate visibility setting for a test; YouTube’s tips mention public or unlisted tests. YouTube Help: Streaming tips
- Check the Live Control Room preview before clicking Go live.
- After the event has ended on YouTube, stop the encoder.
Software encoder or hardware encoder?
An encoder is necessary for this workflow, but it does not have to be a physical device. YouTube identifies software encoding programs as an option and says expensive equipment is not necessary to begin. It recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production events, so choose based on the production you need and the encoder you already have. Troubleshoot key and scheduled-stream problems
The encoder connects, but the scheduled broadcast is not live
Starting the encoder sends the feed to YouTube; it does not itself publish the scheduled broadcast. Confirm the right event is selected in Live Control Room, wait for its preview, and click Go live.

The preview does not appear
Check that the encoder is sending to the correct YouTube stream URL and that its key field contains the key selected for that event. Confirm the encoder is running, then allow time for the preview to arrive. If it still does not appear, verify the key and URL in Live Control Room and the encoder before the scheduled start.

You reused settings but need different details
Open the newly created scheduled stream and edit its settings. YouTube says reused settings can be changed after the stream is created.

The key may have been exposed, or you need to replace it
Reset the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a key. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings
The event ended, but the encoder is still sending
End the broadcast in YouTube and then stop the encoder, rather than leaving the encoder running after the event.
