Use Playwright to sign in once, save the browser context’s authentication state, then load that state into a fresh context each time your scheduled job runs. Before capturing, verify that the page is authenticated and ready; saved state can expire, and Playwright’s standard storage-state API does not preserve sessionStorage.
Choose the right route before automating a login
If the site offers an official API or export that provides the information you need, consider that first. Browser automation is appropriate only when you own the account or have permission to automate the site. Do not use this workflow to bypass access controls, multi-factor authentication (MFA), bot protections, or the site’s terms.

The pattern is: complete an authorized login, save the resulting state in a protected file, and load it when the screenshot job creates a new browser context. A scheduler such as cron, a task scheduler, or a CI schedule launches the script; Playwright does not schedule recurring runs itself.

Create a setup script that opens the site’s login page and completes its authorized login flow. Read credentials from the scheduler’s secret store or environment rather than hard-coding them in source.

Wait for evidence that login succeeded. Use a site-specific authenticated UI element or final URL, not merely the completion of a button click; redirects and asynchronous cookie updates may still be in progress.

Save the state with
await page.context().storageState({ path: authFile }). Playwright’s authentication guide recommends storing it in aplaywright/.authdirectory and adding that directory to.gitignore. The file should be accessible only to the setup process and screenshot job.

Load the state and capture on each scheduled run
Here is the recurring-job portion in JavaScript. Replace the example values and authenticated marker with values for the site you are authorized to access. This is a workflow outline, not a tested implementation for a particular website.

Make the ready check meaningful
Navigation completion does not prove that the application has finished client-side rendering or loaded the content you intend to capture. Wait for an authenticated marker and, when needed, a separate content-ready marker or site-specific condition. Keep the same viewport, locale, timezone, and display scale between runs if you plan to compare screenshots. Decide consistently whether to dismiss cookie notices or other overlays, and do so only in ways permitted by the site.
Configure the scheduler around the script
Have the scheduler invoke the script with a stable working directory, the expected runtime and browser dependencies, access to the protected state file, and a writable screenshot destination. Exact scheduling syntax varies by host and is not specified by Playwright’s cited guides. Record job status and useful error details, but never log passwords, cookie values, authorization headers, or the raw state file.

Playwright’s standard saved state can cover cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey-based authentication, depending on the application’s design and the API options used. If the application stores authentication tokens in IndexedDB, request its inclusion as described in the BrowserContext API reference. Do not assume a cookie-only copy contains everything the site needs.
sessionStorage is the important exception: Playwright’s standard storage-state API does not persist it. If the site relies on it, deliberately capture the necessary values and restore them with an initialization script scoped to the site’s origin before application scripts run. Avoid copying unrelated origins or secrets into the job.
Authentication is site-specific. Browser-bound authentication or a site’s reauthentication requirements may prevent a saved state from working as a simple reusable file; follow the site’s permitted login process rather than trying to evade those controls.

Protect the state file and the screenshots
Playwright warns: “The browser state file may contain sensitive cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate you or your test account.” Treat it as a credential, not ordinary test output.

Keep authentication state out of public and private repositories; use a narrowly accessible secret or artifact mechanism to provision it to scheduled jobs.

Restrict filesystem and artifact access, encrypt backups where appropriate, and remove stale state when it is no longer needed.

Do not put raw state in command-line arguments, build logs, exception messages, or shared CI artifacts. If it is exposed, rotate or regenerate it.

Apply access and retention controls to screenshots too: authenticated pages may contain personal or business information.

Choose account and concurrency behavior deliberately
A dedicated account and one saved state may suit read-only screenshots if the site permits unattended access and simultaneous sessions do not invalidate one another. Playwright recommends reusing one account only when concurrent tests can run without affecting one another. If runs modify shared server-side state or conflict, serialize them or use separate accounts and state files per worker. Its Best Practices guide emphasizes isolation.

The screenshot shows a login page
The state may have expired or been revoked, the wrong origin or storage mechanism may have been saved, or the site may require reauthentication. Detect the login page or missing authenticated marker and stop the capture as an authentication failure; alert an operator or use a controlled, authorized setup flow to refresh state. Avoid repeatedly retrying passwords, which may trigger account protections.
Cookies are present, but the app is logged out
Check whether the application keeps authentication in local storage, IndexedDB, or sessionStorage. Ensure IndexedDB is included when required; handle sessionStorage separately because standard storage state does not persist it.

Check that the scheduled environment has the expected runtime, browser version and dependencies, working directory, network access, state-file permissions, and writable output directory. Confirm that the job is loading the intended state file rather than a relative path that resolves differently under the scheduler.

The page is incomplete or inconsistent
Wait for an application-specific ready condition instead of relying only on navigation completion. Account for asynchronous content and overlays, and use a consistent viewport and display scale for repeat captures.
Concurrent runs interfere or sensitive files appear in artifacts
Serialize conflicting work or isolate it with separate accounts and state files. Review artifact permissions and retention, and ensure authentication files are excluded from source control.
