First identify which return route applies: a retailer’s voluntary change-of-mind policy, a statutory cancellation or withdrawal right, or a remedy for faulty or undelivered goods. They have different deadlines and rules. Check your country, the seller, what you bought, whether it arrived, and the dates before relying on any return window; there is no single worldwide 14-day rule.
Start by identifying the right return route
Before contacting the seller, establish where you bought from and which rules may apply. The answer can depend on your country, the seller’s location, the purchase and delivery dates, and whether you bought goods or a service.

- Changed your mind: check the retailer’s voluntary return policy and whether a statutory distance-purchase cancellation or withdrawal right applies.
- Faulty or not as described: use the route for defective goods; do not assume a change-of-mind policy controls your legal remedies.
- Never received the order: use the non-delivery or delayed-shipment process, not a post-delivery return.
- Seller goodwill: a retailer may accept a return under its own policy, but that policy is not automatically the same as a statutory right.

Make a date checklist before the window closes
Save the order confirmation and the seller’s return policy as it applied when you bought the item. Write down these dates and details:

- When you placed the order.
- When the goods arrived, or the promised shipping date if they did not.
- The last day to request cancellation, dispatch the parcel, or have it received, as applicable.
- Any return authorization, label, carrier, packaging, or address instructions.
Those milestones are not interchangeable: a policy may set a deadline to ask for a return, while a legal rule may give a separate period to send the goods back. Keep a dated copy of your cancellation message, seller confirmation, and postage or drop-off receipt so you can show what you did and when.
Send notice and follow the seller’s return instructions
- Use the stated contact route. Submit the request through the seller’s return portal or the contact method it specifies. State clearly that you are cancelling or requesting a return, and keep the timestamped confirmation.
- Check the deadline and next step. Confirm whether you must notify the seller by a date, send the item by a later date, or have it arrive by then. Do not assume that opening a request completes the return.
- Confirm postage and packaging requirements. Check who pays, which carrier or label to use, and whether the seller requires specific packaging or authorization. Follow the instructions before sending the parcel.
- Keep dispatch proof. Save the drop-off receipt, tracking number, and any return label or authorization. Monitor tracking and the refund through the seller’s process.
- Escalate if the seller does not resolve it. Use the official consumer-advice route for your location. If the payment is disputed, contact your card issuer promptly; protections differ between credit and debit cards, and a chargeback is not automatic or guaranteed.

These examples have different scopes. Check the linked official guidance and the rules that apply to your specific purchase, especially for exceptions, services, and faulty goods.

United Kingdom: cancellation after delivery
For a qualifying online, mail, or telephone order, GOV.UK says the buyer generally must tell the trader within 14 days of receiving the item, then has another 14 days to return it. For an eligible cancellation, the refund is generally due within 14 days after the trader receives the returned item, including standard delivery cost; a more expensive delivery upgrade need not be refunded beyond the standard delivery cost. Exceptions exist, and faulty goods can follow different rights. See GOV.UK’s guidance on accepting returns and giving refunds.
European Union: withdrawal and return costs
The European Commission describes a general 14-day right to cancel an online purchase without justification, while noting that exceptions apply. Your Europe explains that the consumer normally pays return postage and packaging unless the trader agreed otherwise or failed to provide the required cost information. If the last day falls on a non-working day, the period extends to the next working day. National rules and the type of product or service can affect the outcome. United States: delayed shipping is not a return window
The Federal Trade Commission’s Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule concerns shipment timing, not a universal right to return a delivered item simply because you changed your mind. For covered orders, a seller must ship within the promised time or generally within 30 days if it stated no shipping time. If it cannot ship on time, it must notify you and offer a choice between accepting the delay and cancelling for a full refund. The FTC’s guidance states: “If there’s a delay shipping your order, the seller has to tell you and give you the choice of either agreeing to the delay or canceling your order for a full refund.” For a delivered item, check the seller’s policy and applicable rules; the cited federal guidance does not establish a uniform US change-of-mind deadline. Do not file a normal return for an item that was never delivered. Save the promised shipping date and seller notices, then contact the seller through its delayed-order or non-delivery process. In the US, for a shipment covered by the FTC rule, the seller must offer you the choice to accept the delay or cancel for a full refund when it cannot ship on time. If the seller does not resolve the issue, consult the consumer-advice route for your location and contact your card issuer promptly about any payment dispute.
