Return the screenshot’s encoded bytes as the successful HTTP response body, and set Content-Type to match the actual format: image/png, image/jpeg, or image/webp. Request the format using the screenshot provider’s documented option, and check the HTTP status before treating the body as an image—failures may return JSON instead.
Return image bytes, not JSON
A client can display or decode the result when the response body contains the encoded screenshot and the response identifies its media type accurately. The filename extension alone is not enough: the bytes, Content-Type, and any download filename should agree.

- Validate the requested output format against the formats your endpoint supports.
- Pass that format using the rendering provider’s documented parameter and spelling.
- If rendering fails, return an appropriate error status and error response rather than forwarding the error body as an image.
- On success, send the raw image bytes with the matching
Content-Type. - If the client should download a file, optionally provide a matching filename through
Content-Disposition.
For example, a successful PNG response should contain PNG bytes and use Content-Type: image/png. Do not parse a successful binary response as JSON. ScreenshotEngine explicitly documents raw successful response bytes and advises clients to read Content-Type; its error responses are JSON: ScreenshotEngine API parameter reference.
Request the format your provider supports
Format names, defaults, and response modes belong to each API’s contract. Specify a format explicitly when you need predictable output rather than relying on a provider default.

| API documentation | Documented formats and behavior |
|---|---|
| ScreenshotEngine | Documents jpeg, png, and webp. Its documented default is jpeg; successful captures return raw bytes. The response table maps them to image/jpeg, image/png, and image/webp, respectively. |
| ScreenshotOne | Lists png, jpeg or jpg, and webp. Its default format is jpg; its default by_format response returns the binary representation. It also documents JSON and empty response modes for other workflows. |
| Cloudflare Browser Rendering | Documents type values png, jpeg, and webp, plus encoding choices of binary or base64. These are Cloudflare-specific options, not universal parameter names. |
These differences are why example fields such as format, type, or encoding must not be assumed to work across providers. Consult the endpoint’s documentation for its exact request parameters and response modes.
Choose PNG, JPEG, or WebP for the consumer
- PNG: choose it when the receiving client requires PNG or your workflow calls for that representation. Confirm that the provider returns PNG bytes and labels them
image/png. - JPEG: use it when JPEG is accepted and lossy output is suitable. Confirm whether the API expects
jpegorjpg. - WebP: consider it when your client accepts WebP or you need its format capabilities. RFC 9649 describes WebP as supporting lossy and lossless compression, alpha transparency, and animation: IETF RFC 9649.
No format is a universal winner for screenshot size or visual quality. If byte size matters, compare representative pages using your real viewport, rendering settings, provider, and downstream clients. ScreenshotOne documents quality controls for formats including JPEG and WebP, but controls and defaults vary by API; check its current options documentation.

Handle responses safely in your client
First distinguish success from failure. Only pass a successful response body to an image consumer. On an error status, read the provider’s documented error format instead; attempting to decode a JSON error payload as an image can produce a corrupt file or a misleading downstream error.

Keep the returned response as binary data when you need to relay an image. Check its status and headers before handling the body as a successful screenshot, and avoid assuming a filename extension proves the encoded format.

Troubleshoot common response problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The saved “image” will not open | An error response was saved as image bytes, or the client parsed binary as JSON or text. | Inspect the HTTP status first. Handle error bodies separately and preserve successful bodies as binary. |
| The browser or decoder reports an unsupported or incorrect type | The media type or filename does not match the encoded bytes. | Compare the requested format, actual response bytes, Content-Type, and filename extension. |
| The provider rejects the format option | The parameter name or accepted value differs by provider. | Use that API’s current documentation; do not assume format, type, jpeg, and jpg are interchangeable. |
| The client receives JSON when it expected an image | The request selected a JSON response mode, or the provider returned a failure payload. | Check both status and provider response-mode settings. Some APIs support non-binary modes for workflows other than direct image delivery. |
| A downstream client cannot display the result | That client may not accept the chosen format. | Choose a representation supported by the consumer and verify it with the actual client rather than relying on extension alone. |
Performance and cost checks
Output format is only one factor in transfer size and rendering behavior. If response bytes affect bandwidth, storage, or latency, measure captures of representative pages at the settings you intend to deploy. Record provider, viewport, quality options, and format, and compare decoded validity as well as byte count; the available format documentation does not establish a universal size or speed advantage.

For a paid rendering API, check how the provider treats failed renders, cached results, and non-image error responses before estimating spend. Keep errors distinguishable from successful captures so your application does not mistake an unsuccessful render for a billable image or store error payloads as assets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I return Base64 or raw image bytes?
For a direct image response, raw bytes with the correct image media type are the straightforward option. Base64 is a provider-specific alternative; Cloudflare Browser Rendering documents binary and Base64 encodings.
Can I trust the file extension to identify the screenshot format?
No. Check the actual encoded bytes and response Content-Type; keep the extension consistent with both.
Does WebP always produce smaller screenshots than PNG or JPEG?
The cited material provides no universal screenshot-size comparison. Measure representative captures with your pages and settings if file size matters.
