Use a finite retry count and choose the delay from the screenshot provider’s rate limits and retry guidance; there is no universal setting that fits every API.
Configure automatic retries for one screenshot request
- Add or open the HTTP Request node that calls your screenshot API. Set its method, endpoint, authentication, and request parameters according to that provider’s documentation.
- Open the node’s Settings tab and enable Retry on Fail.
- Set Max Tries to a finite number of attempts and set Wait Between Tries (ms) to a delay that complies with the provider’s limits and any retry instructions it publishes.
- Run the workflow with a request you can safely test, then inspect the node output and execution details to confirm whether the request eventually returned a usable screenshot.
n8n documentation says that, when enabled, Retry On Fail makes the node automatically try the request again if it fails the first time. Its documented 1000 ms delay is an example, not a recommendation for every screenshot API. See n8n’s HTTP Request node common issues guide and rate-limit guidance.

Choose retries, pacing, or both for multiple URLs
Retries address an individual failed request; pacing controls how quickly a workflow sends a series of requests. If you process many URLs, n8n documents HTTP Request batching and a Loop Over Items node combined with a Wait node as options for rate-limit management. Apply a batch size or interval only after checking the screenshot API’s own limits.

- Use batching or a loop with a Wait node to reduce request cadence when processing a queue of URLs.
- Do not assume that a 429 response, a server error, a timeout, or any other particular condition should always be retried. The appropriate status codes, delay, and handling of a
Retry-Afterheader depend on the API provider.
n8n’s rate-limit documentation directs users to the API provider for its specific limits. The screenshot API is unspecified here, so its retryable statuses, timeout limits, idempotency guarantees, and per-attempt billing cannot be established in advance.

Check for a usable screenshot after the request
A completed HTTP Request node does not by itself establish that the workflow has the screenshot result your next step needs. Add post-request logic that checks the response according to the provider’s documented response format before marking the job successful or passing the output to another node. The response schema is API-specific; do not treat a particular field or status as universal.
Recover an execution that remains failed
Automatic retries configured in the HTTP Request node are different from retrying a failed workflow execution manually. In n8n’s Executions view, an operator can retry a failed execution using either the currently saved workflow or the original workflow, with previous execution data. This is an operator recovery action, not a substitute for choosing suitable request-level retry behavior. See n8n’s executions documentation.

Troubleshoot failed screenshot calls
