Give each URL a finite attempt budget, record what failed and at which stage, and then continue to the next URL. This way, a temporary navigation problem does not force you to repeat successful captures, while persistent failures remain visible in your results.
Retry one URL at a time
Put the complete capture operation for a single URL inside its own retry loop. Keep the browser and other reusable resources outside the loop when appropriate, but isolate page state if reusing it could carry cookies, navigation state, or other unwanted effects between URLs.

Track each URL’s attempt number, failure stage, error, final URL when available, output path, and final status. A navigation timeout, a readiness timeout, a screenshot error, an HTTP error response, and an application error are different outcomes. Preserving those distinctions helps you decide what to retry and what to investigate.

Decide which failures should be retried
| Outcome | Suggested handling |

| Navigation timeout or transport/navigation error | Often transient. Retry within the configured limit, retaining the error from each attempt. |
| Readiness-condition timeout | First check whether the condition matches the page state you need. Repeating an unsuitable wait usually repeats the same failure. |
| Screenshot operation error | Record it as a capture-stage failure, separately from navigation. For example, a locator screenshot can fail if its target detaches. |
| HTTP error response or rendered application error | Decide whether it is a failed URL based on the job’s goal. A page can load and be captured even when its destination returns an HTTP error or displays an error page; inspect the response or content if that matters. |
| Invalid URL or deterministic configuration error | Usually record and move on rather than retry, unless you have evidence the condition can change. |
A successful screenshot does not necessarily mean the page itself is healthy. Define separately whether your job cares about capture success, destination response status, or expected page content.
Set an explicit attempt budget and delay
Use a finite number of attempts and a deliberate delay between eligible retries. Choose both based on observed failures, total job duration, and the destination sites’ constraints; there is no universal retry count or delay established by Playwright’s documentation. In concurrent batches, increasing delays and jitter can reduce synchronized retry bursts.
When a URL exhausts its budget, keep its last error and continue with the next URL. Do not let a permanent problem block the rest of the batch, and do not retry forever. Report a URL that eventually succeeded as recovered after retry rather than as an immediate success.

Navigation completion and screenshot readiness are not the same thing. A document-load event does not guarantee that a client-rendered component, image, or other content you need has appeared. Wait for a condition connected to the screenshot’s purpose, such as the presence of a particular element or text.
Playwright documents navigation wait states, including commit, which considers navigation complete when a response is received and the document has started loading. Its Page API discourages using networkidle as a testing readiness condition and recommends web assertions instead: Playwright Page API. A page with analytics, polling, or long-lived connections may not become idle in a useful way; repeated network-idle waits can turn a readiness problem into repeated timeouts.
Keep output safe and results auditable
- Write each attempt to a temporary or attempt-specific file. Promote it to the canonical output name only after capture succeeds, so a partial failure does not replace a prior good screenshot.
- Define what happens if a successful screenshot already exists: skip it, overwrite it only after a new successful capture, or save a versioned result.
- Write a manifest with the input URL, attempts made, final status, captured path, and concise failure detail. Include a distinct recovered-after-retry status so transient instability is not hidden.
- Keep the failure stage in the manifest—navigation, readiness, screenshot, or validation—rather than reducing every problem to “URL failed.”
What Playwright’s retry features do—and do not do
Playwright’s Page API handles navigation and screenshot operations separately, so a script can record which stage failed. Locator screenshots wait for actionability, scroll the element into view, and can throw if the target detaches. Playwright Test has a retry mechanism for tests, not a ready-made policy for retrying only failed URLs in a standalone bulk capture script. Its testInfo.retry value is zero on the initial run and increments on retries; a test that fails and then passes is described as flaky: Playwright Test retries. For a URL list, an explicit per-URL loop is the direct way to avoid rerunning successful URLs.
For readiness conditions in Playwright Test, web-first assertions retry until the assertion passes or its timeout is reached: Playwright assertions. Prefer a meaningful assertion over adding repeated fixed sleeps without first identifying what the screenshot needs to wait for.

The same URL fails on every attempt
Inspect the recorded stage and error. If the failure is a readiness timeout, verify the selector or assertion against the page’s actual rendered state. If it is an invalid URL or deterministic configuration issue, fix that cause rather than spending the remaining attempts on it.
A timeout happens after navigation succeeds
Separate navigation completion from readiness and capture in the log. The page may have started loading successfully while the specific content you need never appeared, or the screenshot operation itself may have failed. Preserve the last error and the relevant stage.
The job hangs waiting for network idle
Choose a page-specific signal for the content in the screenshot instead. Playwright explicitly discourages networkidle as a testing readiness condition; a page assertion is more useful when you know what must appear.

A recovered URL makes the batch look clean
Keep recovered-after-retry as a distinct outcome in logs and the manifest. The capture succeeded, but the initial failure is still useful evidence of instability.

A failed attempt damages an existing image
Save to a temporary or attempt-specific path first and update the canonical path only when capture succeeds. Make the overwrite policy explicit so a failed retry cannot destroy a prior good artifact.
