The asterisk group includes anonymous visitors, so removing its edit right blocks anonymous changes while the user group retains its normal editing permission.

This changes editing access only. Pages remain readable unless you separately restrict the read right, and page source may still be obtainable through tools such as Special:Export.

MediaWiki assigns rights to groups rather than directly to individual visitors. The * group contains every visitor, including people who are not logged in. Registered accounts belong to the user group as well. Because rights are group based and additive, denying edit to * removes the ability to edit anonymously, while the ordinary user permission continues to let registered accounts edit.
The result is a read-and-register workflow: anyone can browse public pages, but a visitor must create an account and sign in before the edit action is available. This is different from making the wiki private. Editing and reading are controlled separately.

Configure the wiki in LocalSettings.php
- Open the
LocalSettings.phpfile used by the wiki installation. - Add the anonymous-edit restriction in the configuration, using the directive shown above.
- Save the file and deploy it through the normal configuration process for that installation.
- Test the result while logged out. An anonymous visitor should no longer see an edit action or be able to submit an edit.
- Sign in with a registered account and confirm that the edit action is still available.
Place the directive where your installation keeps other group-permission settings. If the file contains another assignment for the anonymous edit right, check the effective configuration so a later or conflicting assignment does not undo the policy.
Why registered users can still edit
The setting targets only the * group. MediaWiki’s documented group model puts all visitors in that group and places registered accounts in both * and user. Removing a right from * therefore affects anonymous visitors, while the registered account’s user-group right remains in force.

Do not add $wgGroupPermissions['user']['edit'] = false; when your policy is “any registered user may edit.” That second assignment would also remove editing from ordinary registered accounts. It is appropriate only when you intentionally want to narrow editing to another group, such as administrators or a custom group.
What changes for each audience
Anonymous visitors
Visitors who are not signed in lose the ability to edit pages across the wiki. They can still read pages when the wiki’s anonymous read right remains enabled. Registration and login become prerequisites for submitting changes.

Registered users
Accounts retain the normal user-group edit right unless you change it separately. After signing in, a registered user should be able to open the edit interface and save changes according to any other restrictions that apply to the page or namespace.
Administrators and other groups
Higher-privilege groups keep whatever rights their group definitions provide. The anonymous restriction does not, by itself, grant or remove administrative rights, moderation rights, or special permissions.
Editing access is not reading access
Disabling anonymous editing does not hide the wiki. If anonymous read remains allowed, logged-out visitors can continue to view public pages. To create a private wiki, you must configure anonymous reading separately; the edit restriction alone is not a privacy boundary.
Even when editing is restricted, page source should not be treated as secret. The MediaWiki preventing-access guidance warns that users may still view source through Special:Export or other methods. Use separate access controls for genuinely confidential material.

Check the result without guessing
Perform both sides of the test because testing only one audience can hide a misconfiguration.
- Logged-out check: open a normal content page in a private or logged-out browser session and verify that the edit action is unavailable. Attempting a direct edit request should not permit an anonymous save.
- Registered-user check: sign in with an ordinary account in the
usergroup and verify that the edit action appears and that a permitted change can be submitted. - Scope check: test more than one page if your wiki uses namespace or page-specific restrictions, because those controls can impose additional limits beyond the global anonymous rule.
If anonymous editing still works, confirm that the active installation is loading the LocalSettings.php file you edited, that the directive is spelled exactly as documented, and that another permission assignment has not restored the anonymous edit right. If registered users cannot edit, inspect whether the user group’s edit right was also disabled or whether a page or namespace restriction is applying.
When a whole-wiki rule is too broad
The global directive is the right fit when every anonymous visitor should be prevented from editing. MediaWiki also provides narrower mechanisms when only part of the wiki needs protection.
Protect an entire namespace
$wgNamespaceProtection can require a named right, such as autoconfirmed, for pages in a namespace. You can also use a custom permission when your installation defines one. This is useful when public discussion pages should remain open but a documentation or policy namespace should require a more trusted account state.

Protect selected pages
The page Protect feature applies restrictions to individual pages. Restriction levels can be customized with $wgRestrictionLevels, allowing a site to choose which group or right is required for editing a particular page. Page protection is preferable when only a small set of high-risk pages needs tighter control.
Use registration plus stronger account requirements
The anonymous rule requires registration, but it does not require an account to be autoconfirmed or to belong to a special group. If your policy needs an additional trust threshold, use namespace protection, page protection, or a group-specific right rather than disabling the ordinary user permission for everyone.

Common configuration mistakes
Disabling the wrong group
Using the user group instead of * blocks registered users too. For the usual “read anonymously, edit after login” policy, the denied right belongs on *.
Assuming edit denial hides content
The edit permission says nothing about viewing pages or exporting source. Keep the reading distinction in mind when the goal is confidentiality rather than vandalism prevention.
Expecting page-specific behavior from a global rule
The * assignment applies across the wiki. If only one namespace or a few pages need a restriction, use the corresponding namespace or page-protection mechanism instead of imposing a site-wide rule.
Removing the registered-user right by accident
A second line that sets $wgGroupPermissions['user']['edit'] to false changes the policy from “registration required” to “ordinary registered users cannot edit.” Remove that assignment when all registered users should retain editing access.

- Back up or otherwise preserve the current
LocalSettings.phpbefore changing permissions. - Apply the anonymous
editdenial in the configuration used by the live wiki. - Check one page while logged out and one while signed in.
- Confirm that public reading still behaves as intended.
- Review namespace and page protections if some areas require stricter or different rules.
- Document any intentional group-specific edit denials so a later administrator does not mistake them for a registration-only policy.
Result
With the anonymous edit right disabled, MediaWiki requires visitors to register and sign in before editing while leaving ordinary registered-user editing intact. Reading access, source visibility, namespace rules, and page protection remain separate decisions that you can configure independently.
