First reverse the change in the utility that enabled the unsupported feature, if it offers a clear undo or default option. Then restore the driver using the route that matches your operating system and how the driver was installed. A rollback or clean installation can repair driver software, but it is not a guaranteed way to undo an unknown third-party GPU modification.
The exact reversal depends on your operating system, GPU model, feature, and the utility that changed it. If you need feature-specific steps, identify those details before applying another tweak.

Before changing the driver, undo the feature modification
Open the utility that enabled the professional GPU feature and look for an explicit undo, restore defaults, or revert option. Use it before reinstalling the driver if you can identify the change and the utility documents how to reverse it. Do not assume a driver reinstall resets settings, firmware changes, profiles, or other modifications made outside the driver installer.

Choose a recovery route by operating system and installation method
| System and original driver source | Recommended recovery route | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows; NVIDIA installer | Try Device Manager rollback if the previous driver remains available; otherwise install the recommended driver, optionally using NVIDIA’s clean-install procedure. | NVIDIA’s rollback page gives legacy Windows instructions, and its clean-install article addresses an installer failure rather than every GPU feature modification. NVIDIA clean-install instructions; NVIDIA rollback instructions. |
| Linux; distribution repository or package | Use the distribution’s package manager and recovery instructions. | NVIDIA encourages distribution-packaged drivers for compatibility with the distribution’s package-management system. NVIDIA Linux driver README, version 615.71.09. |
| Linux; NVIDIA standalone .run installer | Use that installer’s uninstall procedure, then install the appropriate driver using your chosen method. | The uninstall procedure applies to the standalone installer, not drivers installed through a distribution package. Find a driver for the exact GPU and operating system
Use NVIDIA’s official driver selector and select the actual product and operating system. Do not choose a driver just because its name sounds professional or because it is newer; the selector’s hardware and OS match is the starting point.
Choose a branch for its stated purpose:
- Studio drivers: NVIDIA describes these as tested for creative applications, and describes Production Branch / Studio choices as emphasizing stability and performance.
- New Feature Branch: NVIDIA describes this branch as intended for users who need features named in release highlights, with reduced support compared with a production branch. Choose it only when a specific listed feature is required and the GPU and operating system are supported.
Restore the driver on Windows
Try rollback if the previous driver is still available
NVIDIA’s rollback guidance uses Device Manager to return to the previous driver. Its detailed menu path is written for Windows XP, Vista, and 7, so labels and navigation may differ in current Windows versions. If the Roll Back Driver option is absent, the previous driver may no longer be available; use the reinstall route instead.

Reinstall with NVIDIA’s clean-install option
- Download the driver recommended for your exact GPU and Windows version from NVIDIA’s driver selector.
- Close open applications and let Windows Update finish any active work. NVIDIA notes that applications and Windows Update activity can interfere with installation.
- Run the downloaded installer as administrator.
- Choose Custom (Advanced), then select Perform a clean installation.
- Complete installation and restart Windows.
This is NVIDIA’s documented clean-install method from its support article about an NVIDIA App installation failure. It reinstalls driver components; it does not establish that an unknown third-party utility’s feature change has been reversed. See NVIDIA’s clean-install instructions.

If you installed through your distribution
Use your distribution’s documented driver recovery process and package manager. Avoid layering NVIDIA’s standalone .run installer over a distribution-managed driver: NVIDIA says distribution packages are likely to interoperate best with the distribution’s package-management technology. Consult the Linux driver documentation for your distribution as well as NVIDIA’s Linux README.

If you used NVIDIA’s standalone installer
NVIDIA’s README for Linux driver version 615.71.09 documents nvidia-installer --uninstall as the way to undo that installer’s installation and restore the pre-install state. Before installing, exit the X server and terminate OpenGL applications as directed by the README. These instructions are specific to the standalone installer, not a general removal command for distribution packages.
The standalone installer needs kernel headers or sources to compile its kernel interface. With Secure Boot, the module may also need a trusted signing key. In that signing context, NVIDIA warns that “the installed driver will not be immediately usable” until the kernel trusts the newly generated key. Follow your distribution’s Secure Boot procedure before concluding that the driver installation itself failed.

Check whether recovery worked
- Confirm the operating system recognizes the NVIDIA GPU and reports the driver version you intended to install.
- Test the workload that previously failed, without re-enabling the unsupported feature.
- If the driver is installed but the original feature or instability persists, revisit the utility’s documented revert or reset controls. Driver recovery alone may not undo that utility’s changes.
- If installation fails, use the recovery path for the original installation method rather than mixing package-managed and standalone installers.
For exact steps beyond driver recovery, the essential details are your operating system and version, GPU model, feature name, and the utility that enabled it.
