There is no universal “classic Firefox” stylesheet: the exact CSS depends on which release or interface details you want to reproduce, and selectors can stop working as Firefox changes.
If you only want a denser toolbar, check Firefox’s built-in Compact Mode first. Mozilla says it returned as part of a desktop and mobile design rollout that began September 29, 2026. Mozilla’s Firefox UX Team explains the design update.

Choose between Compact Mode and custom CSS
Firefox already offers supported ways to customize its appearance, including toolbar layout, settings, themes, and add-ons. In the 2026 redesign, settings were reorganized into areas such as Appearance, Accessibility, Languages, and Tabs and browsing; older screenshots and menu paths may not match your version. Mozilla’s settings announcement describes the June 16, 2026 changes.

Mozilla does not officially support custom style rules, and interface updates can change the elements those rules target. Mozilla’s advanced customization guidance outlines that distinction.

Where to put userChrome.css
The file belongs in a folder named chrome inside the Firefox profile that is actually in use. Do not put it in the Firefox application folder or in a website’s files. A profile can be identified through Firefox’s about:support or about:profiles pages; controls and labels can vary by operating system and Firefox version.
- In Firefox’s address bar, open
about:supportorabout:profilesand identify the profile you use. - Open that profile’s folder. Create a folder named
chromeif it does not already exist. - Create a plain-text file named
userChrome.cssinside thechromefolder. Check that the file is not inadvertently nameduserChrome.css.txt. - Open
about:config, search fortoolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets, and set it totrue. - Restart Firefox. The browser checks for the stylesheet at startup.
Mozilla’s contributors guide documents the profile stylesheet, the preference required to load it, and its default value of false.

Choose CSS for the specific older interface you want
“Classic Firefox” can mean different things: a particular release’s appearance, a denser toolbar, different tab styling or placement, or another arrangement. The setup above only enables a stylesheet; it does not recreate any one historic design. A CSS block must target the interface elements and structure present in your Firefox version. Mozilla notes that interface markup and styling evolve, so a rule that once worked may no longer apply.
Use a stylesheet written for your intended Firefox version and goal rather than assuming a generic block will restore every older interface feature. The official Mozilla material cited here explains how custom stylesheets work and their limitations, but does not provide a universal “classic interface” CSS recipe.

Why userChrome.css may not work
- Wrong profile: confirm the stylesheet is in the active profile, not another Firefox profile.
- Wrong location or filename: verify the path is
profile/chrome/userChrome.cssand that the operating system has not added a.txtextension. - Preference disabled: check that
toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheetsis set totrue. - No restart: restart Firefox after creating or changing the file; it loads the stylesheet at startup.
- Outdated or mismatched selectors: the CSS may target different interface elements from those in your Firefox version. Custom rules can break or lose effect after interface changes.
How to undo the customization safely
If the browser interface looks broken, first use Firefox Troubleshoot Mode to check whether disabling custom rules resolves the problem. To remove the customization, set toolkit.legacyUserProfileCustomizations.stylesheets to false, then remove or rename userChrome.css in the profile’s chrome folder. Keep a backup of the file and make changes in small, reversible increments.
Firefox Refresh is a broader recovery measure, not the first step for a stylesheet issue. Mozilla says Refresh removes add-ons and other customizations, including extension data and preference configurations. See Mozilla’s guide to advanced CSS customization for Troubleshoot Mode and reset details.

What userChrome.css changes—and what it does not
userChrome.css customizes Firefox’s browser interface. It is different from userContent.css, which concerns web content. The stylesheet is an advanced, unsupported customization: Firefox can change the interface underneath it, and Mozilla warns that custom rules can cause unexpected behavior or break the browser. If your goal is a supported appearance change, start with Firefox’s built-in controls; use custom CSS only for a specific interface change you are prepared to maintain.
