If recent files are missing from File Explorer in Windows 11, open File Explorer’s Options and check its privacy settings for recently used files. Also make sure you are looking at Home: pinned folders can appear there even when the recent-files list is empty.
1. Check File Explorer Home
In Windows 11, Home is File Explorer’s landing page for recent and favorite files. It replaced the Quick access name in Windows 11 version 22H2. Select Home in File Explorer’s navigation pane to check the recent-files area.

Common folders such as Desktop, Documents, Downloads, Pictures, Music, and Videos may be pinned in Home. Those pinned folders are separate from recent files, so seeing them does not mean the recent list is populated. Microsoft’s File Explorer guide describes Home and its contents.

2. Enable the recent-files setting
- Open File Explorer.
- Select the More menu, then Options. Alternatively, select View > Options.
- On the General tab, find the Privacy section.
- Check the options for showing recently used files and frequently used folders, as applicable.
- Select Apply, then OK, and check Home again.
The controls determine whether recent files and frequent folders are shown. If you previously turned them off, enabling them again may make items you removed from Quick access appear once more, according to Microsoft Support.

3. Don’t confuse recent files with Activity history
Windows Activity history is a separate feature, managed under Settings > Privacy & security > Activity history. It does not control the recent-files list in File Explorer Home. Microsoft says Windows 11 users looking to revisit activity should use recent files, OneDrive, or history within individual apps rather than Timeline. See Microsoft’s Activity history and privacy guidance and its Windows 11 privacy guidance.

If the privacy options are enabled and Home still shows no recent files, the available Microsoft guidance does not establish one specific cause or a guaranteed fix for an empty list. You can try basic Windows troubleshooting—check for Windows updates and restart the PC—but Microsoft presents those steps for File Explorer problems such as failing to open or start, not as a guaranteed remedy for missing recents. Follow Microsoft’s File Explorer troubleshooting guidance if Explorer itself is unreliable.

Avoid treating Activity history as a switch for File Explorer recents: they are separate features. The documented checks above cover the relevant display options and general Explorer troubleshooting, but do not identify every possible reason a correctly configured list may remain empty.
