In that mode, the server does not authenticate players with Mojang as an online-mode server does, so it cannot reliably obtain the premium profile and texture data used for normal skins.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Minecraft Java servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
You have two legitimate fixes: switch to online-mode=true if all players can use authenticated accounts, or keep offline mode and install a platform-compatible skin-restoration plugin such as SkinsRestorer. The second option changes skin presentation only; it does not remove offline-mode impersonation risk.

Why everyone has a Steve or Alex skin
Minecraft Java skins are associated with a player profile that the server normally obtains during online authentication. An offline-mode server skips that Mojang authentication flow. Players can still connect, but the server does not receive the same verified profile and texture information, so clients commonly fall back to Steve or Alex.
Craftserve’s online-mode documentation describes this behavior and also warns that offline mode permits username impersonation. A player can potentially join using someone else’s name because the server is not proving ownership of the account in the normal way. Missing skins are therefore a symptom of the authentication design, not usually a graphics setting or a client-side bug.

Restoring a skin and proving a player’s identity are separate jobs. A skin plugin can look up and display a texture for a name, but it does not turn an offline server into an authenticated server.
Choose the right fix
Decide whether your server genuinely needs offline mode before installing anything. The simpler and more secure skin remedy is online authentication, but it may not fit a network that intentionally accepts players without authenticated accounts or uses a particular proxy arrangement.
| Approach | Best fit | What it solves | Important limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enable online-mode authentication | A server whose players can sign in with authenticated Minecraft accounts | Normal profile lookup, premium skins, and the usual whitelist and operator identity behavior without a skin plugin | Changing identity mode can change which UUID and player-data files are used. Back up the server and plan any migration before switching. |
| Keep offline mode and install SkinsRestorer | A server or proxy network that must retain offline-mode behavior | Skin lookup and display on supported offline-mode platforms; it can also change skins where the project supports that function | Requires a compatible Minecraft/platform build, Java 17 or newer according to the installation documentation, network access to required domains, and correct deployment on every layer of a proxy network. It does not authenticate players. |

- Identify the server software. Determine whether the backend is Bukkit, Spigot, Paper, Fabric, or NeoForge. A proxy network may also include BungeeCord or Waterfall in front of one or more backend servers.
- Map the connection path. Write down whether players connect directly to one server or through a proxy. Installing a plugin on only one layer can leave skins missing elsewhere.
- Read the configured authentication mode. In the server’s
server.properties, locateonline-mode=. The valuetruerequests online authentication;falseis offline mode. - Back up the complete server. Include worlds, the
playerdatadirectories, whitelist and operator files, configuration files, and proxy data. Keep a dated copy outside the live server directory. - Check Java and Minecraft compatibility. SkinsRestorer’s installation documentation lists Java 17 or newer and requires a supported game version and platform. Its support matrix changes, so check the project’s current list for your exact Minecraft release before downloading a build.
- Check outbound network access. The plugin needs access to the domains listed in its documentation. Firewalls, DNS filters, container policies, or a hosting provider’s egress rules can prevent texture lookups even when the plugin itself loads.
Option A: switch the server to online mode
Use this route when every intended player can authenticate and you do not need offline-mode access. Craftserve’s documentation identifies online-mode: true as the remedy that restores normal skin behavior without a skin plugin.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the server console’s normal stop command rather than killing the process, then wait until the process exits.
- Make and verify a backup. Copy the world folders, player data, configuration, and proxy files. Do not rely on a backup that has not been checked for readable contents.
- Edit the backend configuration. Open
server.propertiesand setonline-mode=true. Remove accidental spaces or duplicate entries; the server reads the final effective property. - Review the proxy topology. If players enter through a proxy, follow that proxy’s current online/offline forwarding guidance. Do not guess at forwarding settings: an inconsistent authentication arrangement can produce failed logins, duplicate identities, or security holes.
- Start the server and read the console. Confirm that authentication succeeds and that no proxy or forwarding errors appear.
- Test with an affected account. Join using the account’s normal authenticated name and wait for the client to receive the profile texture. Test the whitelist and operator behavior as well, because the UUID used for an authenticated account may differ from the UUID previously created in offline mode.
Changing the flag does not automatically merge old offline-mode player data with the authenticated identity. Inventories, locations, statistics, advancements, permissions, and other files can appear to disappear when the server starts using a different UUID. Leave the original backup untouched until you have confirmed which identity should own each player’s data.
Option B: stay offline and install SkinsRestorer
SkinsRestorer is the usual solution when offline mode is a deliberate requirement. Its project listing describes restoring and changing skins on offline and online servers, while its installation documentation separates server and proxy deployments. Download only a build that the project lists as compatible with your software and Minecraft version.

Standalone Bukkit, Spigot, or Paper server
- Confirm prerequisites. Use Java 17 or newer, a supported Minecraft version, and outbound access to the domains named in the current SkinsRestorer documentation.
- Stop the server. Never replace a plugin jar while the server is actively writing files.
- Place the plugin jar in the correct directory. For a Bukkit-compatible server, the jar belongs in that server’s
pluginsdirectory. Do not put it in a client’s mods folder or a proxy’s plugin directory unless the documentation for that layer explicitly calls for it. - Start the server again. The Craftserve guide specifically recommends a restart rather than
/reload. Reloaders can leave classes, listeners, or configuration state partially loaded. - Check the startup log. Look for a successful SkinsRestorer enable message and for dependency, Java, version, or network errors. A jar that is present but disabled is not an installed solution.
- Test an affected player. Have a player reconnect after the plugin has loaded. Allow time for the profile lookup, then inspect the client and server log if the default skin remains.
BungeeCord or Waterfall proxy network
A proxy network has two software layers: the proxy that accepts the connection and the Spigot-compatible backend that runs the world. The Craftserve example places the plugin on each Spigot backend and on the proxy, and enables the backend proxy configuration before restarting both layers. Treat that as a topology-specific example, not a universal recipe.
- List every participating server. Include the proxy and every backend to which players may be routed.
- Read the current SkinsRestorer proxy instructions. Confirm which jar belongs on the proxy and which belongs on each backend for your exact proxy software and Minecraft version.
- Install on the required layers. Do not install only on the lobby if players later transfer to separate game servers.
- Apply the proxy forwarding settings required by the documentation. The backend must know it is behind the selected proxy, and the proxy must be configured consistently with the backend. A mismatch can cause login failures or leave the backend unable to process skin requests.
- Restart the proxy and backends. Restarting both layers gives the plugin a clean lifecycle and ensures that configuration changes are loaded everywhere.
- Test initial login and server transfer. Verify the skin in the first server a player joins and again after moving to another backend. Check logs on both layers if the result differs.
Fabric or NeoForge
Do not use a Bukkit jar on a Fabric or NeoForge server. The SkinsRestorer documentation lists separate platform builds and, in the cited support snapshot, says Fabric and NeoForge releases support only the latest Minecraft version. That restriction is particularly important when your server is on an older game release. Check the current platform page, loader requirements, Java requirement, and dependency list before installation.
How to verify that skin restoration is working
Use a controlled test instead of asking every player to troubleshoot at once:
Rank #4
- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
- Start with a clean restart and capture the complete startup log.
- Confirm that the plugin or mod reports an enabled state, not a skipped or incompatible state.
- Join with one affected player whose account has a known skin.
- Wait for the player to finish joining, then inspect the skin from another client as well as from the affected client.
- Move the player through each proxy backend if the network has more than one server.
- Record the exact Minecraft version, server software, Java version, and connection path if the skin is still absent. Those details are required to match the project’s troubleshooting guidance.
If the plugin does not load
- Check that the jar matches the server platform. A Bukkit plugin cannot be loaded as a Fabric mod.
- Check Java with the version shown by the server process, not merely the Java installed on your desktop.
- Look for a version-support error and compare it with the project’s current support list.
- Remove duplicate or obsolete copies of the plugin from plugin directories, then restart.
- Check file permissions and the server log for a failed configuration write.
If the plugin loads but skins remain Steve or Alex
- Test outbound DNS and HTTPS access to every domain required by the current documentation.
- Check whether a firewall, container, or host policy blocks the lookup.
- Confirm that the affected player’s name is spelled and capitalized as expected by the service.
- Test from another account to distinguish a single profile problem from a server-wide lookup failure.
- Review the plugin’s current troubleshooting page and logs. Do not assume that a successful enable message proves that texture requests are succeeding.
Offline mode is an authentication decision, not a skin setting
Because offline mode permits a connection without the normal Mojang account check, a malicious user may attempt to join under another player’s name. Depending on the rest of the server configuration, that can expose another player’s permissions, inventory, or operator privileges. Craftserve’s documentation calls out this impersonation risk.
SkinsRestorer does not fix it. A restored texture can make a player look correct while the name remains unauthenticated. Keep permissions conservative, protect operator access, use a trustworthy authentication design suitable for your audience, and read the current documentation for any authentication system before relying on it. No third-party plugin should be described as eliminating every risk without examining its own security model and maintenance status.
When the real problem is lost inventory or advancements
Some administrators say “the skin disappeared” when the larger problem is that a premium player’s inventory, statistics, advancements, or location vanished after switching between online and offline modes. That is a UUID and player-data migration problem, not ordinary skin rendering.
Best Value

UUID Restorer is a separate Fabric mod whose repository documents a more invasive workflow. It resolves a Mojang profile by nickname, applies signed skin data, and migrates player data, statistics, and advancements from an offline UUID to a premium UUID. The documented compatibility snapshot lists Minecraft 1.21.8 through 1.21.11, Fabric Loader 0.17.3 or newer, Fabric API 0.141.3+1.21.11, and Java 21 or newer. These requirements can change, so verify them against the repository before use.
What its migration workflow provides
- Timestamped backups before migration, according to the project documentation.
- Commands for checking status, binding an offline identity to a premium identity, migrating data, refreshing information, and resolving conflicts.
- Signed skin-data restoration alongside UUID-associated player-data handling.
The nickname-trust warning
Automatic restoration trusts the nickname. If another person joins an offline server using the same premium nickname, the system may assign that person the premium UUID and cached textures. The documentation describes trusted manual bindings as safer and recommends explicitly resolving conflicts when both offline and premium save buckets exist instead of guessing.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Make a separate, verified backup before touching player data.
- Confirm the old offline UUID, the intended premium account, and the exact spelling of the name.
- Prefer a deliberate manual binding for high-value accounts or disputed identities.
- Use the project’s status and conflict tools before migration, then inspect the resulting inventory, statistics, and advancements in game.
- Retain the pre-migration backup until the player confirms that the correct data was moved.
Do not install UUID Restorer merely to make a skin visible. Use it only when you have a documented identity and player-data migration need and its compatibility matches your Fabric environment.
A practical decision checklist
- Can every intended player authenticate? If yes, online mode is normally the simplest and safest skin solution.
- Must the server remain offline? Select a compatible SkinsRestorer build and deploy it to the correct server and proxy layers.
- Are players losing inventories or advancements? Investigate UUID migration separately; a skin plugin will not merge player-data files.
- Is the server exposed to untrusted users? Treat username impersonation as a security problem even after skins appear correctly.
- Did you back up before changing identity mode or migrating data? If not, stop and create a verified backup first.
- Does the exact platform, Minecraft version, Java version, and network topology match the documentation? If not, resolve compatibility before troubleshooting texture behavior.
What to expect after the fix
With online mode, authenticated profiles should receive their normal skins as part of the standard login process, subject to the player’s account and the server’s proxy configuration. With offline mode plus SkinsRestorer, skin display depends on the plugin’s supported platform, successful network lookups, and correct installation on every relevant layer.
Neither approach automatically reconciles identities created under a different UUID scheme. If a player’s appearance is fixed but their old inventory is still missing, stop treating it as a texture problem and follow a backed-up UUID migration plan instead.
