A down jacket that looks flat or lumpy may simply still be damp: complete drying is the key to helping the down regain loft. Check the garment’s care label first. If it permits tumble drying, use its specified heat setting with two or three clean dryer balls or tennis balls, checking the jacket as it dries. If the label prohibits machine drying—or you do not have a dryer—air-dry it flat and fluff it regularly.
Why a down jacket looks flat
Down can clump when wet, making a jacket look thin and uneven before it has dried. That appearance alone does not mean the insulation is permanently damaged. The jacket needs to dry thoroughly, and the care label—not a universal heat or wash setting—determines the safe method.

Restore loft with a tumble dryer, if the label allows it
- Check the care label. Follow its washing and drying instructions, including any temperature limits or direction to use professional cleaning. Close zippers and fasteners if the manufacturer recommends it.
- Wash only if needed and permitted. Use the detergent, water temperature and cycle specified for the jacket, and rinse as directed. Patagonia’s Australia care guidance recommends cold-to-low-temperature water, a front-loading washer and gentle detergent; it suggests Nikwax Down Wash Direct and says not to use bleach, an iron or fabric softener. - Handle the wet jacket carefully. Wet down can be heavy. Avoid wringing the garment unless its maker specifically permits that method.
- Tumble-dry using the label’s setting. Add two or three clean tennis balls or dryer balls to help agitate the garment and break up clumps. Brand recommendations vary: Patagonia advises no-to-low heat, potentially over several cycles; Helly Hansen recommends a long tumble-drying program for its down jackets. - Check for dryness as you go. Montane advises low-heat intervals of 20 minutes, checking between runs. That is a check interval, not a promised total drying time. Continue only as the garment’s instructions allow, until the jacket is completely dry. Montane’s down aftercare guidance.
- Shake gently once dry. This can help redistribute the down. If clumps remain, first check for dampness; Montane notes that persistent clumping may mean the down is not fully dry.

If the jacket still has clumps after drying
- Check again for damp patches, including inside thicker or more densely filled areas. If you find any, resume the label-approved drying method.
- If the jacket is fully dry but still clumped, repeat the manufacturer’s care steps if they permit it, or contact the maker or a repair professional for advice.
- If the baffles or fabric appear damaged, balls and fluffing cannot repair them; ask the maker or a repair professional about the garment.
Care instructions do not establish a universal recovery percentage, number of jackets that will recover, or fixed drying time. A damaged garment may not regain its original loft.

Keep the jacket from staying compressed
