How to Restore File Explorer as the Default After Uninstalling a Replacement

Learn how to make folders open in File Explorer again after removing a replacement file manager, with Windows 10 and 11 diagnostics, Default apps steps, and safe escalation guidance.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If folders stopped opening after you removed a third-party file manager, first verify that File Explorer itself still launches. Then use Settings > Apps > Default apps to repair the specific file or link association involved. File Explorer is built into Windows, so uninstalling a replacement normally does not remove Explorer; the remaining problem is usually an association or an app-specific folder-opening setting.

Start by identifying what actually fails

“File Explorer is no longer the default” can describe several different failures. The correct repair depends on whether Explorer cannot launch at all, a folder opens with an error, or only one action still points to the removed manager.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Direct launch fails: Start, the taskbar icon, and Windows logo key + E all fail to open Explorer.
  • Direct launch works, but folders fail: Explorer opens normally when launched directly, while double-clicking a folder shows an “app not found” message or another error.
  • Only a particular file, link, or action fails: Most other folders open correctly, but one association still points to the old program.

Test the direct-launch methods before changing settings:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Start, type File Explorer, and select it.
  2. If Explorer is pinned, select its taskbar icon.
  3. Press Windows logo key + E.

If any of those methods opens Explorer, Windows still has the built-in file manager available. That result points toward a folder-opening or association problem rather than an absent Explorer installation. This is a diagnostic distinction, not proof that every replacement app leaves associations behind in the same way.

Write down the exact symptom before proceeding. Note whether the error appears when you double-click a folder in an existing Explorer window, choose a folder from Start search, select a shortcut on the desktop, or open a location from another application. Also note the wording of any message and whether it names the uninstalled manager. These details help distinguish a Windows association from an internal command used by another program.

Use Windows’ supported Default apps page

Windows presents defaults by association. Depending on the item, you may be changing the application assigned to a file type, a link type, or another registered action. Selecting an app does not automatically guarantee that every folder, file, and protocol behavior will change with it.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Apps.
  3. Select Default apps.
  4. Search for the file or link type connected with the failure, or select an application to review the types it supports.
  5. Select the current assignment and choose an available app.
  6. Close Settings and test the same action that failed before.

For example, if a particular document opens in an unwanted program, search for that document’s extension and assign the desired application. If a web or shell link is involved, search for the relevant link type instead. The page only shows associations that Windows and installed applications have registered; it may not expose a universal “folders” switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are two useful ways to navigate this page. Searching for an extension or link type is best when you know exactly what fails. Selecting an application is useful when you want to see which file and link types Windows currently associates with it. Check both views if the first one does not reveal the behavior you are trying to repair. A visible File Explorer entry for one type does not prove that every directory action is assigned to it.

After selecting File Explorer, Windows may show a confirmation or a list of available applications. Choose only the assignment related to the failed action. Changing unrelated types can make troubleshooting harder because it introduces additional variables.

Why folder opening is different from an ordinary file default

Microsoft’s current consumer instructions describe changing defaults by file type and link type, or by reviewing an app’s supported types. They do not provide one reset control that covers every third-party folder handler on every Windows build. A replacement file manager may register its own folder-opening behavior, context-menu command, shell integration, or startup component.

Consequently, do not assume that assigning File Explorer for one visible extension will repair every directory action. A folder is not simply another document such as a text or image file. The behavior can depend on:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which Windows version is installed.
  • How the replacement application registered itself.
  • Whether the application’s uninstaller removed those registrations.
  • Whether the failure occurs from File Explorer, the desktop, a shortcut, or another program.

Record the exact action that fails. “Double-clicking a folder in File Explorer,” “selecting a folder from Start search,” and “opening a folder from another application” may not use the same registration. That detail determines whether the Windows Default apps page is sufficient or whether the former manager’s own repair instructions are needed.

A third-party program can also have been the default only for a particular command, while Explorer remained available all along. For instance, a file manager may add a context-menu item or a shell integration that is separate from ordinary document associations. Removing the program can leave a shortcut or command looking for its old executable. That is why a direct Win+E test is more informative than assuming that the entire Windows shell has changed.

Check the uninstalled manager’s own cleanup guidance

If the Default apps page does not expose the behavior that is broken, identify the replacement you removed and look for its official uninstall, reset, or association-cleanup instructions. The necessary step is app-specific, so a procedure that works for one file manager may not apply to another.

Use the former app’s documentation only for the part it controls. Look for instructions mentioning folder handling, shell integration, context-menu entries, default-manager mode, or restoring Windows defaults. If the application supplied an uninstaller option such as “remove integrations” or “restore Windows associations,” run that option and restart Windows before testing again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not reinstall a replacement merely to make it the default again unless you actually want to keep using it. Reinstalling can recreate the same registration and may add another cleanup step later.

Have the exact application name and version available when contacting its publisher. Two products described generally as “file managers” can register different actions, and the cleanup procedure can vary by Windows release. If the publisher offers a dedicated uninstaller, use the documented version rather than a download from an unofficial mirror.

Use the Default Apps deep link when Settings navigation is inconvenient

Windows documents ms-settings:defaultapps as a shortcut that opens the Default Apps page. Press Windows logo key + R, enter that URI, and press Enter. You can also paste it into a browser address field that supports Windows settings links.

This URI is useful for support instructions and troubleshooting, but the ordinary Settings path is the most dependable approach for consumers. Microsoft’s app-specific query parameters depend on Windows version and application registration. The documented support covers Windows 11 version 21H2 with the April 2023 cumulative update, version 22H2 with that update, and version 23H2 or later. A link intended for a named app may therefore fail or open a different view on another build.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the URI does nothing, returns you to another Settings page, or shows a different layout, use the manual path instead. That behavior does not by itself indicate that Explorer is missing; it can simply reflect a Windows build that does not support an app-specific deep link.

Windows 10 and Windows 11 considerations

The broad navigation—Settings > Apps > Default apps—is available in current Windows 10 and Windows 11 releases, but the page layout and search controls can differ. Follow the labels shown on the affected computer rather than a screenshot from another build.

In Windows 11, Microsoft says File Explorer opens to Home by default. Home was renamed from Quick access in Windows 11 version 22H2. That name change affects what you see after Explorer launches; it does not mean Explorer has been replaced or removed. A successful launch that opens Home is evidence that the built-in application is working, even if a folder shortcut elsewhere still fails.

On either version, avoid treating a changed Explorer start location as a default-app problem. The page Explorer opens first and the application Windows uses to open a folder are related experiences but are not the same setting. Concentrate on the action that produces the error.

Choose the least disruptive repair route

Route When to use it Scope Disruption
Default Apps page A visible file or link association is wrong One association or the types shown for an app Low; normally changes only the selected assignment
Former manager’s cleanup or reset instructions The failure is a folder handler or integration that Windows does not expose clearly App-specific registrations and integrations Depends on the app and its uninstaller
Restart and app repair/reset A broader installation or removal problem remains after the default is corrected The affected application or Windows component, where those controls exist May close apps or remove app data, depending on the reset
Publisher support The old app is gone but its documented cleanup path is unclear, or its uninstaller failed Focused help for that application Usually less disruptive than rebuilding Windows
Reset this PC Persistent system-wide installation/removal failures leave Windows broadly damaged System-wide recovery High; use only after backups and less invasive options

Microsoft’s installation and removal guidance mentions restarting, repairing or resetting an app when those controls are available, contacting the publisher, and eventually using Reset this PC for persistent failures. Those measures are aimed at broader installation problems, not at a routine one-association correction. Do not jump to a system reset because one folder shortcut still points to a removed program.

There is normally no purchase required for this repair. Windows Settings and File Explorer are the relevant tools. Paid “repair” utilities, installation media, or a new file-manager license do not address the narrow default-association problem and can add cost or additional registrations without solving the underlying action.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Explorer opens from Win+E, but a folder says “app not found”

This pattern indicates that Explorer itself is present while the folder-opening action is still referencing the uninstalled manager. Return to Settings > Apps > Default apps and inspect the association represented by the failing action. If no folder-related entry appears, consult the former manager’s cleanup instructions; Microsoft’s general Default apps page does not promise a single universal folder reset.

Explorer opens, but the taskbar icon or Start entry is missing

Use Start search or Windows logo key + E to confirm that the application launches. A missing pin is a shortcut or taskbar arrangement issue, not necessarily a default-association failure. Restore a pin only after confirming that Explorer itself works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A file opens in the wrong application, but folders work

Search for that file type on the Default apps page and select the intended application. This is the case where Windows’ documented file-type workflow most directly applies. Test a second file of the same type after changing the assignment.

Only links or locations opened by another app fail

Determine whether the other program is launching a file type, a link type, or its own internal picker. Search the corresponding type in Default apps. If the action is internal to that program, changing Windows’ defaults may not affect it.

Settings will not retain the new assignment

Restart Windows and repeat the change once. If the assignment reverts, check whether the former manager is still installed under another name or has a background component that restores its registration. If the application was only partially removed, use its official repair or uninstall guidance rather than repeatedly changing unrelated defaults.

Explorer itself will not launch

Because the default-association procedure assumes Explorer can run, treat a complete launch failure as a broader Windows or application problem. Restart first. If the failure began during an installation or removal, use the app’s repair/reset option when available and follow Microsoft’s installation/removal troubleshooting guidance. Reserve publisher support or Reset this PC for persistent problems, after protecting personal data.

The old manager no longer appears, but an old context-menu command remains

A leftover command is an integration problem rather than proof that every default is wrong. Check the former manager’s documentation for removing shell or context-menu integration. Do not assign random file types or alter unrelated defaults simply because the command is visible.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

What not to do first

  • Do not assume one app-level selection restores everything. Defaults are presented per file type, link type, or registered application capability.
  • Do not invent a folder extension. A single extension is not established as a universal cover for all directory-opening behavior.
  • Do not edit registry association keys as a routine first step. The supported consumer path is the Default apps page or the former application’s documented cleanup process.
  • Do not download an unverified registry file. It can change unrelated associations and make recovery harder.
  • Do not reset Windows for a single broken shortcut. A system reset is a broad recovery operation, not the normal solution to one leftover default.
  • Do not keep changing settings without recording the original state. Change one relevant association, test it, and then move to the next diagnostic step.

Verify the repair

After making a change, test the exact route that originally failed and at least one independent route:

  1. Launch Explorer with Windows logo key + E.
  2. Open a folder by double-clicking it from the location where the error appeared.
  3. Open a file type or link type that you changed, if applicable.
  4. Restart Windows and repeat the folder test to check that the assignment persists.

If Explorer launches and the same folder now opens normally after restart, the repair is complete. If Explorer launches but the original action still calls the removed manager, the remaining registration is specific to that application or action; return to its official cleanup guidance instead of changing random file extensions.

A practical decision checklist

  • Can File Explorer open from Start, its taskbar icon, or Windows logo key + E?
  • Does the failure affect folders, a particular file type, a link type, or only one application?
  • Have you checked Settings > Apps > Default apps for the relevant association?
  • Does the removed manager provide an official association-reset or integration-removal instruction?
  • Have you restarted after an uninstall or repair?
  • Is the problem broad enough to justify publisher support or Windows recovery, or is it still one association?

Bottom line

File Explorer is a built-in Windows feature, and removing a replacement normally does not remove it. Confirm that Explorer opens, then repair the specific visible association under Settings > Apps > Default apps. Folder-opening behavior may be registered differently from ordinary file and link defaults, so an app-specific cleanup step can be necessary. Escalate to repair, publisher support, or system recovery only when the problem extends beyond one leftover default.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I make folders open in File Explorer again after uninstalling a file manager?

First press Windows logo key + E to confirm Explorer opens. Then go to Settings > Apps > Default apps and change the association connected with the failed action. If no folder-related setting appears, follow the removed manager’s official association or integration cleanup instructions.

Does uninstalling a replacement file manager remove File Explorer?

Normally, no. File Explorer is built into Windows. If Explorer opens from Start, its taskbar icon, or Win+E, the built-in application is still available and the problem is more likely a leftover association or app-specific command.

Why can’t I find a “folder” option in Default apps?

Microsoft’s current Default apps page is organized around file types, link types, and registered app capabilities. It does not promise one universal folder-handler reset for every third-party manager or Windows build, so the former app’s cleanup guidance may be required.

Should I edit the registry to restore Explorer?

Not as a routine first step. Use Windows’ Default apps page and the former manager’s documented cleanup process. Avoid downloading an unverified registry file because it can alter unrelated associations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will the ms-settings:defaultapps shortcut work on every Windows version?

The ms-settings:defaultapps URI opens the Default Apps page. App-specific deep links depend on Windows version and registration; Microsoft documents support for Windows 11 version 21H2 and 22H2 with the April 2023 cumulative update, and version 23H2 or later. The manual Settings path is more dependable.

Do I need to buy repair software or reinstall Windows?

Usually not. This narrow fix uses built-in Windows Settings. Restart or use an available app repair/reset option only when a broader installation problem exists. Publisher support or Reset this PC belongs to persistent, system-wide failures, not one broken folder association.

What if Win+E works but one application still opens folders incorrectly?

That application may use its own internal picker or command rather than the Windows association. Determine whether it launches a file type, link type, or internal location, then check the corresponding default or that application’s support instructions.

The Bottom Line

Test File Explorer directly first. If it opens, use Settings > Apps > Default apps to correct the specific association, then apply the removed manager’s official cleanup guidance if folder behavior remains broken. Avoid registry downloads and system resets for a single leftover default.
