To bring back classic Windows 11 desktop shortcuts, open Settings > Personalization > Themes > Desktop icon settings, select the icons you want, and choose OK. If every desktop icon has disappeared, first turn on View > Show desktop icons from the desktop’s right-click menu; that control is separate from the system-icon settings.
Show This PC, Recycle Bin, Network, or User’s Files
Windows 11 includes a built-in dialog for choosing which common system shortcuts appear on the desktop. Microsoft lists This PC, Recycle Bin, Network, and User’s Files among the available icons. The Recycle Bin is shown on the desktop by default, but you can change which icons are displayed.

- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization > Themes.

- Check each system icon you want to see, then select OK.

If shortcuts, files, and folders have all vanished, check the desktop-wide visibility switch before changing individual system icons:

- Right-click an empty area of the desktop.
- Open View.
- Select Show desktop icons if it is not checked.
This toggle controls whether desktop icons are visible at all. Use Desktop icon settings when the desktop is visible but a particular system shortcut is missing. Microsoft outlines both cases in its missing desktop icons troubleshooting guide.
Change the icon artwork or protect it from themes
Showing a shortcut and changing its artwork are different tasks. The Desktop icon settings dialog also supports customizing common desktop icons. If you have a particular older Windows image in mind, however, its availability is not guaranteed across Windows 11 builds.

The dialog includes Allow themes to change desktop icons. Microsoft says this option is enabled by default and controls whether themes can change common shortcuts such as This PC, User’s Files, Network, and Recycle Bin. Clear it if you want your chosen artwork to stay in place when you apply a theme. See Microsoft’s description of desktop icon and theme settings.
Find a Windows 95-era icon
A 2025 report by TechRadar describes some older Windows 95-era icons still accessible through Windows 11’s icon-change dialog and a system DLL. Treat that as a possible place to look, not a guarantee: the specific image or location may vary by Windows build. TechRadar’s report gives the lead, while Microsoft’s documentation confirms the customization controls but does not promise that every historic asset is included.

When the icon controls are unavailable
On a work- or school-managed PC, organizational policies may affect desktop themes or Recycle Bin visibility. Microsoft’s Desktop Policy CSP documentation covers related controls for Windows 11, version 21H2 and later. It does not establish the cause of every unavailable setting; if a control is missing or blocked, ask your organization’s administrator.
