Start by checking whether your bookmarks or history are hidden, saved to the Google Account you expect, or still present on another device. If a bookmark was deleted in Chrome or synced history was deleted, Google’s documented tools do not provide a guaranteed way to bring it back. A saved export or backup may help only if it already contains the missing data.
First check the Chrome profile, account, and other devices
Chrome data can be saved to a Google Account when you sign in and enable the relevant data-saving settings. If you were signed out or did not save the data to the account, it may exist only in the Chrome profile on that device. Google explains how Chrome sign-in and account data work in its Chrome sign-in guide.

- In Chrome, open the bookmark manager and the History page to confirm the data is actually missing. Check that you are using the expected Chrome profile.
- Check the Google Account shown in Chrome’s settings. A different account may have different bookmarks and sync settings.
- If another device may still hold a copy, inspect it before changing sync settings, deleting data, or signing out. This can help you avoid propagating a deletion or replacing a surviving copy.
Google says bookmarks saved to an account are available on signed-in devices. Browsing history appears across devices only when History and tabs sync is enabled. See Google’s device-sync instructions.
Restore bookmarks after changing devices or reinstalling Chrome
Check bookmark sync
Sign into the same Google Account that held the bookmarks, then review Chrome’s sync and data-saving settings. On desktop, Google’s documented route is Chrome Settings, then “You and Google,” your account name, and the setting for “History and tabs.” Labels and menus can vary by Chrome version and platform, so look for the current sync controls if the wording differs. Check whether bookmarks are available in the account as well.

Signing into a new device does not establish that a cloud copy exists. If bookmarks were never saved to the account, check the original device and any backup you already maintain. Google says an account can hold up to 100,000 bookmarks; that is an account limit, not a recovery guarantee.
If a bookmark was deleted
Google’s Chrome Help says, “After you delete a bookmark, you can’t get it back.” The documented bookmark interface does not provide an undelete option. An existing export or backup might still contain it; otherwise, the cited Google help pages do not document a guaranteed restore path. Can you recover deleted Chrome history?
Chrome’s History page lists pages visited in the last 90 days, according to Google Chrome Help. It excludes pages visited in Incognito mode and pages deleted from browsing history. History sync can show eligible history from other devices, but it is not an undelete feature: Google says deleting synced history also deletes it from devices signed in with history sync. Chrome browsing history, Google Search history, and Web & App Activity are related but distinct views and controls. Do not assume that Google Search history is a complete copy of every page visited in Chrome; Google describes managing search history separately in its Chrome account sign-in information.

A Google data export may include bookmarks and Chrome browser history, depending on what data is selected and remains available. Google says, “You can download data that hasn’t been deleted.” An export is therefore not a way to recreate records already deleted from the account. Google also notes that some work or school account data may not be available for export; check your organization’s administrator policy if that applies. See Google’s Chrome data export instructions.

Import an exported bookmark HTML file
- Open Chrome and choose Bookmarks and lists > Import bookmarks and settings.
- Choose the bookmark HTML file you previously exported, then follow Chrome’s prompts.
Google documents a separate Bookmark manager flow for Chromebooks. Imported bookmarks may appear in a new folder or in “Other bookmarks,” depending on whether the profile already contained bookmarks. Follow the platform-specific directions in Google’s bookmark import guide.

An export or backup helps only if it was made before the loss and includes the missing data. If no account copy, other-device copy, export, or backup exists, Google’s cited help pages do not establish a guaranteed recovery route for deleted or device-only data.
What not to do—and how to keep a copy next time
Resetting Chrome settings to their defaults is not a bookmark recovery step. Google says that reset does not delete or change saved bookmarks and passwords, but it also does not restore deleted bookmarks. See Google’s reset-settings explanation.
To reduce the impact of a future device change or deletion, periodically export bookmarks to an HTML file and keep a separate copy somewhere you control, such as external storage. The export and import steps are documented in Google’s bookmark guide. That separate copy is a precaution, not a way to recover data that was never included in it.
