Pick From iCloud Backup to restore over Wi‑Fi, or connect the iPhone to the Mac or Windows PC that stores the backup and select Restore Backup in the appropriate Apple app. Restoring this way does not merge a backup into an iPhone that is already set up: erasing removes its current contents and settings.
Choose the restore method that matches your backup

Before you start: the iPhone must be at setup
Apple’s restore flow begins at the Hello screen. If the iPhone is already configured, erase it before using the setup restore steps. Erasing removes the phone’s current content and settings, so save anything you still need before proceeding. Apple’s restore instructions explain this requirement; the iPhone User Guide also describes erasing an iPhone.
A backup restore returns the device to a saved state; it is not a way to combine the backup with the phone’s currently configured contents. If you set up a device as new and later decide to use an existing iCloud backup, Apple advises erasing and restoring from it as soon as possible. A new backup created after setting up as new can overwrite an earlier iCloud backup.

Restore from an iCloud backup
- Turn on the new or erased iPhone and begin setup at the Hello screen.
- Continue through setup to Transfer Your Apps & Data, then tap From iCloud Backup.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used to create the backup.
- Select the intended backup, checking its date and size. If the iPhone asks for a newer software version, follow the onscreen update steps, then continue.
- If prompted, sign in to the Apple Account or Accounts used for purchases. You can skip this and sign in later, but apps may not be usable until you do.
- Keep the iPhone connected to Wi‑Fi while the progress bar runs. Apple estimates this initial stage can take a few minutes to an hour, depending on backup size and network speed. If Wi‑Fi disconnects, the restore pauses until the connection returns.
- Complete setup. Then keep the iPhone connected to Wi‑Fi and power regularly so remaining apps, photos, music, and other information can download. Depending on how much information there is, background restoration can take several hours or days.
Apple’s iCloud restore instructions cover the setup flow and continued downloads.
Restore from a Mac or Windows computer backup
- Open the app that manages the backup: Finder on Mac; Apple Devices on Windows; or iTunes on Windows if Apple Devices is not installed, and on macOS Mojave or earlier.
- Connect the iPhone to the computer with a USB cable. Enter the device passcode or respond to Trust This Computer if prompted.
- Select the iPhone when it appears, then choose Restore Backup.
- Review the listed backups and choose the appropriate one by date.
- If the backup is encrypted, enter its password. Apple says an encrypted local backup cannot be used without that password.
- Wait for the restore and restart to finish. Keep the iPhone connected until it has finished syncing with the computer.

If the restore does not go as expected
The backup is missing or the iPhone asks for a software update
Confirm you signed in to the Apple Account associated with the iCloud backup, or connected to the computer that holds the local backup. If the iPhone requests a newer software version, follow its update steps and retry. If the backup still does not appear or a restore fails, use the troubleshooting links in Apple’s restore article rather than guessing at the cause.

The iPhone does not appear on the computer
Check for a device passcode or Trust This Computer prompt and respond to it. If the iPhone remains missing, follow Apple’s device-visibility troubleshooting linked from its restore instructions.

You forgot the encrypted-backup password
Apple says there is no way to recover an encrypted backup without its password. Apple cannot retrieve it for you, and the backup cannot be restored without it. See Apple’s computer-backup guidance.
An iCloud restore paused
Reconnect the iPhone to Wi‑Fi. Apple says a restore pauses if Wi‑Fi disconnects before it finishes; it can resume when the connection is restored.

Some content is missing after setup
For an iCloud restore, leave the iPhone on Wi‑Fi and power so background downloads can finish, and sign in to the purchase-related Apple Account or Accounts if requested. Health and Activity data are absent from an unencrypted computer backup, according to Apple’s backup guidance.
