First identify which Echo Spot you have: the original 2017 model (“rook”) and the 2024 release have different recovery evidence. If the Spot still opens Settings, try Amazon’s restart and factory-reset steps for the confirmed model. If a modified 2017 Spot boots into Amazon Recovery, do not assume a factory reset will restore its firmware; the computer-based recovery route documented by the community is model- and firmware-specific, and is not a guaranteed repair.
Identify the generation and current screen
Before resetting or connecting the device to a computer, establish which model you own and what it currently displays. Amazon’s article titled Reset Your Echo Spot (2024 Release) gives steps for the 2024 release. The separate community hardware document concerns the first-generation Spot released in 2017, whose codename is “rook.” Do not transfer button combinations, firmware guidance, or recovery assumptions between them.

- Generation: Is it the original 2017 Spot or the 2024 release?
- Screen state: Can you reach normal Settings, do you see an Amazon Recovery menu, or does the device keep restarting?
- Firmware: If it is the 2017 model, can you verify the exact Fire OS version before considering community recovery?
If you cannot identify the model or state, stop before attempting low-level recovery. Contact Amazon device support for the official path, or consult the current project documentation only if you have confirmed that your device matches its model and firmware requirements.
If the Spot still opens Settings, use Amazon’s reset path
2024 Echo Spot
Amazon recommends a restart before a factory reset. Unplug the power adapter, wait a few seconds, reconnect it, and see whether the Spot boots normally. If it does not, open Settings > Device Options > Factory Reset. The on-screen choice lets you retain smart-home device connections or reset to factory defaults and erase settings. Once the reset completes, the display shows a setup QR code for guided setup in the Alexa app. These steps are for the 2024 release, as described in Amazon’s 2024 Echo Spot reset article.

Screen-equipped Echo devices, including Echo Spot
Amazon’s general Reset Your Echo Devices with a Screen article says its steps also work with Echo Spot. It recommends unplugging the power adapter for 15 seconds before trying again. If the interface is available, its on-screen route is Settings > Device Options > About this Device > Reset to Factory Defaults.
That general article also documents a button reset: hold the Microphones & Camera Disable/Enable button and Volume Down together until the Amazon logo appears, which takes about 15 seconds, then follow the screen prompts. This is a general screen-device procedure, not a reason to assume every generation has the same recovery behavior. Use the 2024 Spot’s dedicated instructions when they apply.

A factory reset clears settings and returns the device to a setup flow. Amazon’s reset instructions do not say that it reinstalls firmware changed by a jailbreak or Android installation. If a reset finishes but the altered device still cannot boot, repeating the reset is not a documented firmware repair.

The community-maintained techo5-spot hardware documentation describes a computer-based recovery and development route for the original 2017 Echo Spot, using its micro-USB port and computer tools. This is independent community documentation, not an Amazon-supported repair, and it is not a general Android recovery method.

Check model and firmware before connecting tools
The project’s documented support table lists Fire OS versions 5.5.6.9, 5.5.5.2, and 5.5.3.4, and says its tooling refuses other versions. Those are project-specific constraints that may change: verify the current guide and the exact firmware on your Spot before following any low-level procedure. A computer and a data-capable micro-USB connection are relevant only to this 2017 community route; Amazon’s built-in reset does not require buying a cable.
Do not improvise partition or Android-image instructions
The same project describes boot and recovery partitions interacting with Fire OS. It reports that Fire OS may recreate Amazon recovery on boot and that changing system files caused a boot failure on the tested unit. Its process can change partitions and wipe userdata, so low-level recovery can erase data or make the device harder to recover. Do not copy commands or flash images intended for another Echo model, and do not treat the documented 2016-era Android base of the 2017 Spot’s stock Fire OS as evidence that a generic Android image is compatible.

If the recovery menu offers “Reboot system now”
A 2022 Amazon forum thread describes one owner whose Spot kept restarting into Amazon Recovery after a hard reset. An Amazon staff member suggested selecting “Reboot system now.” If that exact option is visible, trying it once is a reasonable low-risk step, but the thread is an anecdote, not a universal fix or a firmware-reinstallation procedure. If the Spot loops again, stop repeating resets and seek model-specific support or consult the current project guide.
