To restore a Google Account backup to a Samsung Galaxy, use the Setup Wizard on a new or factory-reset phone. At Copy apps & data, choose the option to continue without the old device, sign in to the Google Account used for the backup, select the available backup and items, then follow the remaining prompts. Samsung says this restore cannot be started from Settings after setup is complete.
Before you restore: check the backup and protect current data
If the old phone still works, verify that it is using the Google Account you plan to restore from and make a fresh backup before moving on. Samsung’s current Singapore guide gives this path: Settings → Accounts and backup → Google Drive → Back up data → Back up now. Depending on the Galaxy’s software, the route may instead start at Settings → Google → Backup. Labels vary by model, Android version and region. Samsung’s Google Drive backup guide and Samsung Canada’s Google One guide describe these backup options.

A factory reset erases data currently stored on the Galaxy. Before resetting, save anything new on the phone that you still need, and verify the backup’s presence and categories. Google backup and Google Photos are not interchangeable with a complete copy of every local file.

- Start the Setup Wizard. Continue setup on a new Galaxy, or begin setup after a factory reset.
- Open the restore choice. At Copy apps & data, tap Next, then choose the option worded like Can’t use other device? or Can’t use old device. The exact label can differ by software version and region.
- Sign in to Google. Use the same Google Account that holds the old phone’s backup.
- Select the backup and content. Choose the relevant device or most recent available backup, review the categories offered, select what you want, and tap Restore.
- Complete setup and wait for downloads. Follow the Google and Samsung account prompts. Apps and other content may continue downloading after setup; Samsung says transfer time depends on the amount of data.
- Check the results. Review important contacts, messages, settings and photos in their relevant apps or services. The backup inventory and restore choices show what is available for that account and device.
Samsung describes Google Drive restoration as a Setup Wizard process on a new or reset device, not an action available from Settings after setup. See Samsung’s US backup and restore instructions.

What may come back—and what is not guaranteed
Depending on the device and backup, Samsung lists categories such as apps, photos and videos, SMS/MMS, call history, device settings, Google Account data, contacts and app data. These are categories that may be offered, not a promise that every app’s private data or every local file will return. Check the actual backup inventory before relying on it.
For photos, check both the backup’s listed items and Google Photos. Samsung separately distinguishes items backed up to Google Photos in its retention information, so a Google device backup should not be treated as a complete photo archive.

Why a Samsung backup may not appear
- Wrong Google Account: Sign in with the exact account used on the old phone. A backup associated with another account will not appear under the current one.
- No recent backup: Confirm that a backup was actually made on the old device and that it remains available.
- Backup aged out: Samsung Singapore says Google Drive backup data other than items backed up to Google Photos is deleted after 57 consecutive days of device inactivity. Verify the backup before resetting.
- Storage limit: Google Account storage is used for backup. Samsung notes that if the account exceeds its available space, additional storage may be needed for backups.
- Android version mismatch: Samsung warns that a backup made on a newer Android version cannot be restored to a device running an older Android version.
- Restore screen missing after setup: The documented Google restore route is in the initial Setup Wizard. It is not a Settings restore option once the phone is configured.
Samsung Singapore says automatic backup occurs over Wi-Fi while the phone is charging and has been idle for at least two hours. That is the documented condition for automatic backup, not a guarantee that every phone has a current backup. See Samsung Singapore’s backup instructions.
If the phone is already set up, choose the route that matches your backup
Samsung does not document an in-place Google Account backup restore from Settings after setup. A reset would return the device to setup, but it erases current contents, so first preserve any data on the phone that is not safely backed up.

- Samsung Account backup: For data previously saved to Samsung Cloud, Samsung documents Settings → Samsung Account name → Samsung Cloud → Restore data. This is a separate backup store from Google Account backup. See Samsung’s restore guidance and Samsung’s storage management guide.
- Smart Switch computer backup: If a backup exists on a Windows PC or Mac, connect the Galaxy with a compatible USB cable, open Smart Switch on the computer, choose Restore, then select the backup and categories. Supported external storage may also be usable, depending on the model. This restores a Smart Switch backup, not a Google cloud backup.
- Working old phone: Samsung Smart Switch can transfer data directly from another phone using a wired or wireless connection. The available method and any adapter requirements depend on the devices and the amount of data being transferred.
Choose the recovery method by where the backup lives
| Backup source | Where to restore | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Google Account backup | Setup Wizard on a new or reset Galaxy | Requires the Google Account holding the backup; Samsung does not document an in-Settings restore after setup. |
| Samsung Cloud | Samsung Cloud restore screen in Settings | Applies to data backed up to a Samsung Account, not a Google Account backup. |
| Smart Switch on a computer or supported external storage | Smart Switch restore workflow | Uses a local or external Smart Switch backup rather than Google cloud backup. |
| Direct transfer from an old phone | Smart Switch transfer during migration | Transfers from a working source phone; connection options and requirements vary by device. |
