When someone opens a record from a paginated table and returns, restore the view they were working in—not just the page number. Preserve the search, filters, sort order, page size, page or cursor, and useful list position. Put state in the URL when it should be shareable or survive reloads; keep private or short-lived state elsewhere.
What a complete table view needs to remember
A page number by itself is not a view. Page three of overdue invoices is different from page three of all invoices, and the rows can also differ with sorting or page size. Model the full working context:

- Search query and active filters
- Sort field and direction
- Page size
- Current page number or cursor
- Where useful, the user’s position in the list, such as scroll position or a selected row
This distinction matters when implementing return navigation: restoring only the page number can land the user on a different set of records. The UX pattern is described in Uriel Bitton’s SaaS pagination UX guide.

Choose where each piece of state belongs
Use the URL for views that should be shareable or reloadable
Query parameters work well for page or cursor, page size, sorting, search, and filters that are safe to expose. A URL that fully describes the list can be bookmarked, shared, reloaded, and revisited through browser history. Shopify’s Hydrogen pagination guidance connects URL-based pagination state with sharing a list URL and returning to the same scrolled position: Hydrogen pagination. Its migration guidance recommends keeping cursor, direction, search, filters, and sort together in URL search parameters when the view should restore after reload or browser navigation: Shopify’s pagination migration guide.
#1 Best Overall
- CRISP CLARITY: This 23.8″ Philips V line monitor delivers crisp Full HD 1920x1080 visuals. Enjoy movies, shows and videos with remarkable detail
- INCREDIBLE CONTRAST: The VA panel produces brighter whites and deeper blacks. You get true-to-life images and more gradients with 16.7 million colors
- THE PERFECT VIEW: The 178/178 degree extra wide viewing angle prevents the shifting of colors when viewed from an offset angle, so you always get consistent colors
- WORK SEAMLESSLY: This sleek monitor is virtually bezel-free on three sides, so the screen looks even bigger for the viewer. This minimalistic design also allows for seamless multi-monitor setups that enhance your workflow and boost productivity
- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
Do not put confidential customer details, access tokens, or private search terms in a URL that can be copied, logged, or retained in browser history. Keep sensitive values in an appropriate private application store instead.
Use history or application state for transient details
In a single-page application, the History API can associate serializable state with a same-origin history entry. history.pushState() adds an entry; history.replaceState() updates the current entry without adding another; and a popstate event lets the app respond when the user traverses history. MDN documents these behaviors in its pushState() reference.

Use transient state for details such as an exact scroll offset or selected row when they do not belong in a shareable URL. Keep the URL, history state, visible controls, and fetched rows consistent; a filter shown in the controls must not disagree with the query used to load the table.
Check what the framework actually restores
Do not assume a framework’s general app-state feature preserves every table detail. SAPUI5 version 1.96 says its general app-state mechanism restores list-report filter values, but not changes to a chart or table, scroll position, or selections; refresh restoration also depends on launchpad backend persistence. See the SAPUI5 1.96 app-state documentation. Verify the behavior for the exact framework version and runtime you deploy.

Make return navigation reliable
- Capture the list context before opening a record. Include the current query, filters, sort, page size, page or cursor, and any transient position you plan to restore.
- Choose history semantics deliberately. Use a new history entry when a navigation should be a distinct Back-button step; replace the current entry when updating it should not add a step. The History API’s
pushState()adds an entry to session history, as MDN documents. - On return, restore the view rules and fetch current data. Retain the user’s filters and sort while refreshing rather than assuming the old rows are still valid.
- Restore scroll only after the list is ready. If your app takes control of scrolling, define when it does so and coordinate it with the browser. MDN describes
history.scrollRestorationvaluesautoandmanualin its scroll restoration reference. Waiting until content and layout are ready before custom scrolling is an implementation consequence: restoring too early can target the wrong position. - Keep the rendered table aligned with the restored state. Validate URL page bounds and send a query to the data source that matches the state represented by the controls and URL.
Handle changed searches and stale pages differently
Reset pagination for a new result set
A newly changed search or filter defines a different result set. Reset to its first page or initial cursor; carrying over a high page number can show an empty table even when matching records exist on earlier pages. Keep the newly selected filter visible and communicate the resulting state.
Recover if the old page no longer exists
Returning to the same view cannot guarantee the same records if data has changed. Records may have been deleted, or the result count may have fallen. If the restored page is now beyond the valid range, move to the last valid page and explain the recovery rather than presenting an unexplained empty table. Validate numbered-page bounds and keep the rows consistent with the URL and data query, as Shopify’s pagination migration guidance advises.

Explain when the opened record no longer matches
If the record the user opened no longer satisfies the active filter, show a short explanation connecting the change to the return—for example, that it is no longer included because it no longer meets the selected criteria. Keep this distinct from a valid empty result and from a request error.

For slow, failed, duplicate, or out-of-order page requests, preserve existing results or show a deliberate loading state, block duplicate submissions where appropriate, and prevent an older response from replacing the current view. Make pagination understandable to assistive technology
Give the pagination controls a navigation landmark with a distinct accessible name when the page has multiple navigation regions, and mark the current page with aria-current="page". The W3C Design System pagination example demonstrates both. Use visible, specific control names, check keyboard focus behavior, and keep loading feedback understandable after restoration.
A background refresh should not move focus without a reason. Shopify’s pagination migration guidance recommends moving focus only when needed to keep the user oriented.
Test the complete return journey
- Choose a filter and sort order, then move beyond page one.
- Open a record and return with the browser Back control. Check the page or cursor, filters, sort, page size, and useful list position.
- Repeat using the app’s return-to-list link.
- Reload the shareable URL and open it directly. Confirm the intended refresh behavior.
- Remove enough records to invalidate the former last page. Check recovery to a valid location and a clear explanation.
- Check keyboard navigation, loading feedback, and the smallest supported screen size.
- Exercise slow and failed requests, duplicate requests, out-of-order responses, and changed filters.
This combines the return, app-link, reload, invalid-page, keyboard, loading, and small-screen checks in Bitton’s UX guidance with the request and direct-navigation cases in Shopify’s migration guide.
