Open Google Play, tap your profile picture, and choose Manage apps & device > Manage. Set the filter to This device > Not installed if the app is not shown, select it, then tap Install. If the app is listed as turned off, the button will be Enable instead.
Before reinstalling anything, search the app drawer. If the Google app appears there, only its home-screen shortcut is missing; the app itself is still installed.

First identify what happened to the app
“Uninstalled” can describe several different Android states. The correct fix depends on whether the app is absent, disabled, archived, or merely missing from the home screen. Checking the state first prevents unnecessary resets and downloads.

Android Help distinguishes deleting or disabling an app from archiving it. An archived app is not an ordinary uninstall: Android removes the app’s data but keeps the icon and personal data on the device. Treating every missing app as a fresh uninstall can send you down the wrong troubleshooting path.

Restore the app through Google Play
Google’s documented recovery route works for Google apps and other apps obtained through Play. Menu names can vary slightly by language, Android release, or device manufacturer, but the sequence is the same.
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
- Choose Manage apps & device.
- Open the Manage tab.
- If the app is not visible, change the filter from the current list to This device, then choose Not installed.
- Tap the Google app you want to restore.
- Tap Install. If the app is present but turned off, tap Enable instead.
Wait for Play to finish before opening the app. A successful installation returns the app to the installed-app list; you can then place a shortcut on the home screen if needed. If the button says Enable, do not look for a second download: Android already has the app package and only needs it turned back on.
Why the “Not installed” filter matters
Google Play’s management screen can be filtered to show apps currently on the phone or apps associated with the account that are not installed. When the list appears empty, the app may simply be hidden by the current filter. Selecting This device > Not installed exposes apps previously obtained through that Play account that are eligible for this phone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck the app drawer before reinstalling
A deleted home-screen icon does not uninstall an app. Open the full app drawer, search by the app’s name, and launch it. If it opens, the restoration is complete; only the shortcut needs to be recreated.
To add the icon back, use the launcher’s normal gesture, such as pressing and holding the app icon and dragging it to a home-screen panel. Exact gestures differ among manufacturers and launcher versions, so there is no single universal button sequence. If holding the icon does not work, consult the launcher’s on-screen options rather than deleting or reinstalling the app again.
This check is especially useful for Google apps that are commonly moved between home-screen panels. It also avoids using mobile data or waiting for a download when the application is already present.
Use the Google Account that originally obtained the app
Google Play associates downloads and purchases with a Google Account. Confirm the account shown by tapping the Play Store profile icon. If you use a different account from the one that originally downloaded or purchased the app, it may not appear in the expected list, or Play may show a purchase prompt.

Google says apps bought through Play can be used again on compatible Android devices without paying a second time when you sign in with the same account. That does not guarantee availability on every phone: compatibility and app availability can vary by device. If an app is missing from Not installed, verify the account before assuming the installation has been permanently lost.
Switching accounts safely
In Google Play, tap the profile icon and select the account switcher. Choose the account connected to the app, then return to Manage apps & device > Manage and check This device > Not installed again. You do not need to buy an eligible previously purchased app again merely because another account was active on the phone.
If the app does not appear in Google Play
Work through these checks in order:
- Search the app drawer. It may still be installed or merely disabled.
- Confirm the account. Use the Google Account associated with the original download or purchase.
- Check the filter. Select This device, then Not installed.
- Look for an Enable button. A disabled app will not be restored with an Install command.
- Consider compatibility. Google notes that some Play content is unavailable on particular devices.
- Check whether the app is the Play Store or Play services. They are separate components with different recovery methods.
Do not sideload an APK simply because an app is absent from the list. The documented Play route confirms the account and device compatibility at the same time and avoids installing an unverified package.
When the missing app is Google Play Store
The Play Store is itself an app, so the same distinctions apply. First search the app drawer. If it is present, open it; if it is disabled, Google Play’s management screen should offer Enable. If it is absent, sign in to the appropriate Google Account and inspect Manage apps & device > Manage > This device > Not installed.
Sometimes the Store is installed but malfunctioning rather than missing. In that case, reinstalling another Google app will not repair the Store. Use Google’s Play Store troubleshooting sequence instead.
Repair a Play Store that opens but cannot download apps
Google documents two main repair actions. They are troubleshooting measures, not the default way to reinstall an unrelated missing app.
Remove Play Store updates
- Open Android Settings.
- Open the Play Store’s App info page. You can usually reach it through Settings > Apps, then selecting Google Play Store.
- Tap the three-dot More menu.
- Choose Uninstall updates and confirm.
- Open Google Play Store again.
- Tap your profile icon, open Settings > About, and tap Update Play Store.
This replaces a faulty or incomplete Store update with the version Android can obtain through its own update mechanism. The exact Settings path can vary by device, but the labels Uninstall updates and Update Play Store are the relevant actions.

Clear Play Store cache or data
From the Play Store’s App info page, open Storage and use the cache or data-clearing controls provided by your Android version. Google warns that clearing Play Store data can reset settings such as parental controls and password protection. You may also have to accept the Play Store Terms of Service again.

It is not a substitute for selecting Install in the management list, and it does not convert a disabled app into an enabled one automatically.
Do not confuse Google Play services with the Play Store
Google Play services is a background component, while Google Play Store is the app that displays and installs applications. They are not interchangeable.
Google describes Play services as included with Android and says it cannot be uninstalled. Its current help information supports Android 7.0 (API level 24) and later. Therefore, instructions telling you to reinstall Play services as if it were an ordinary Play Store download are inappropriate.
If Play services is causing an error
Start by checking for a Play services update in the device’s Settings, as Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends. Search Settings for Google Play services or open its entry under Apps, then use the available update option. Do not download a random APK from a third-party site to replace a component that Android normally supplies.
If your original problem is that the Play Store is missing, return to the Play Store recovery steps. If an installed app reports that Play services is out of date, follow the update path instead; enabling or reinstalling the Store addresses a different component.
What to do with an archived Google app
Archiving is a storage-saving state, not the same as uninstalling. Android Help says archiving removes the app data but retains the icon and personal data on the device. The remaining icon can make the app look installed even though its executable files are not currently available.

Tap the retained icon or use Google Play’s app-management screen to restore the archived application. If Play presents Install, use it; if Android presents an archive-restoration control, follow that prompt. Avoid clearing unrelated Play Store data first, because archiving does not indicate that the Store is damaged.

Recommended Free Tools
- The icon is missing only from the home screen: open the app drawer and add a launcher shortcut.
- The app is in the drawer but will not open: check whether it is disabled and use Enable.
- The app is absent from the drawer: open Play, select Manage apps & device > Manage > This device > Not installed, and use Install.
- The app is not in that list: verify the Google Account, then consider device compatibility.
- The Store itself fails to download apps: use More > Uninstall updates, then Settings > About > Update Play Store; clear cache or data only with awareness of the settings reset.
- The error names Google Play services: treat it as a services update issue, not a missing-Store issue.
Common mistakes that delay recovery
- Reinstalling before checking the app drawer: a missing shortcut requires no download.
- Using the wrong Google Account: Play records downloads and purchases by account, so another account can make a previously obtained app appear unavailable.
- Choosing Install when the app is disabled: use Enable when Android already lists the package on the device.
- Clearing Play Store data as a first step: this can remove parental-control and password-protection settings and require the Terms of Service to be accepted again.
- Treating Play services like an ordinary app: Google says it is included with Android and cannot be uninstalled; check for its update instead.
- Sideloading an APK from an unknown source: use the Play management list so account ownership and device compatibility are checked together.
- Assuming every phone has identical menus: launcher gestures and some Settings paths vary by manufacturer, language, and Android release.
How to confirm the restoration worked
After tapping Install or Enable, return to the app drawer and open the app once. If it launches, the package is present and active. If the home-screen icon is still absent, add a shortcut from the drawer; that is a launcher task, not another Play installation.
If the app remains unavailable, return to Play’s profile menu and verify the account, then repeat Manage apps & device > Manage > This device > Not installed. If the app still does not appear, the remaining documented explanation is that the title is not available for that device. Do not repeatedly clear Play Store data or remove updates unless the Store itself is malfunctioning.
After the app is restored
Open the app once to confirm that Android completed the installation or re-enablement. If you need quick access, add its shortcut from the app drawer. If the app still does not appear, repeat the Play Store check with the correct Google Account and the Not installed filter rather than repeatedly clearing data.
Keep the distinction between an app, its shortcut, the Play Store, and Play services in mind when reporting the problem. Those four items can look similar in a support question but require different actions. The safest recovery path is therefore state-based: find the app, identify whether Android says Install or Enable, and reserve Store repair for a Store malfunction.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I restore a Google app without paying again?
Usually, yes, if you sign in to the same Google Account that originally bought the app. Google says previously purchased Play apps can be used on compatible Android devices without a second purchase. Availability can still vary by device.
Best Value
Why does Google Play show Enable instead of Install?
Enable means the app package is already on the phone but has been turned off. Tap Enable; downloading it again is unnecessary.
What if the app is missing only from my home screen?
Open the app drawer and search for it. If it appears, it is still installed. Use your launcher’s normal press-and-hold or add-shortcut control to place its icon back on a home-screen panel.
Why can’t I find the app in Manage apps & device?
Confirm that Play is using the Google Account associated with the original download or purchase, then select This device and Not installed. If it remains absent, Google notes that some apps or content are unavailable on particular devices.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is an archived app the same as an uninstalled app?
No. Android archiving removes the app data while keeping the icon and personal data on the device. Restore it from the retained icon or through Google Play’s app-management prompt.
How do I fix a Play Store that opens but will not download?
From the Play Store App info page, use More > Uninstall updates, reopen the Store, then go to Settings > About and choose Update Play Store. You can also clear cache or data, but clearing data may reset parental controls and password protection and require accepting the Terms of Service again.
Can I reinstall Google Play services from the Play Store?
Google Play services is different from the Play Store. Google says it is included with Android and cannot be uninstalled; check for an available update in device Settings instead.
Should I download an APK if the Google app is not listed?
No. First verify the account, the This device > Not installed filter, and device compatibility. The documented Google Play route avoids installing an unverified package.

The Bottom Line
Check the app drawer first. If the app is truly absent, use Google Play’s Manage apps & device > Manage > This device > Not installed list and choose Install; choose Enable when Android has merely disabled it. Use the same Google Account, treat archived apps separately, and reserve Play Store update removal or data clearing for a Store that is malfunctioning.
