Restarting Steam is often the fastest way to clear a stuck login, a frozen store page, or a client that won’t close properly. The trick is doing it in the right order—closing the Steam process is easy, but Steam’s helper processes can keep running in the background.
This 2024 guide gives you three quickest restart methods, then maps each method to Windows, macOS, and Linux. You’ll also get a troubleshooting checklist if Steam won’t come back after the restart.

Why restarting Steam fixes common problems
Steam is more than one process. When the main client hangs, the embedded web components (often steamwebhelper) can remain alive and keep the UI stuck.
A restart forces Steam to reload authentication, store content, and local session state—usually resolving issues like:

Before you restart: quick prerequisites
- Save anything active: If you’re in the Steam Deck settings or changing library locations, note what you were doing.
- Have your login ready: If Steam signs you out, you may need your password or Steam Guard confirmation.
- Check your connection: If your network is down, Steam may “restart” successfully but still fail to sign in.
3 quickest ways to restart Steam (2024)
1) Restart from Steam’s own menu
This is the cleanest restart method because it asks Steam to shut down gracefully and restart itself. It’s ideal when Steam is responsive and you can access the menu.
Use it first; if Steam is frozen, skip to force-close options.
2) Force-close Steam and relaunch
When Steam won’t fully exit, forcing it closed resets both the main Steam process and its stuck background workers. This is the fastest “hard reset” that still keeps your Steam account and games intact.

3) Kill Steam’s web helper and restart (fastest fix for stuck UI)
Many “Steam is stuck” issues come from the embedded web component (commonly steamwebhelper). Killing just that component can fix the store/login UI without fully disrupting everything.
If you still need a full restart, follow up with the force-close method.
Platform-specific steps
Windows 10/11
Windows is where Steam most often ends up with leftover processes. These steps are designed to stop the client completely and bring it back immediately.
- Open Steam (or bring it to the foreground if it’s responsive).
- Click Steam (top-left) → Exit.
- If Steam refuses to close: press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- On the Processes tab, end Steam.
- Also end any steamwebhelper processes (and Steam Client WebHelper if shown).
- Relaunch Steam from your desktop icon or Start menu.
macOS (Steam on iMac, MacBook)
On macOS, use Finder/Apple menu controls or Activity Monitor to stop Steam and its helper processes cleanly.

- Click the Steam menu in the top-left bar → choose Quit Steam.
- If it hangs: open Activity Monitor (Spotlight → type Activity Monitor).
- Search for Steam and steamwebhelper.
- Select each matching process → click the Stop (X) button → choose Force Quit.
- Reopen Steam from Applications or Launchpad.
Linux (Steam desktop launcher)
Linux Steam can be restarted like any desktop app, but leftover processes are common when the client freezes.
- Try closing Steam normally: click the app window close button, or use Quit from Steam’s menu.
- If it won’t exit, open a terminal.
- Run:
ps aux | grep -E "steam|steamwebhelper" | grep -v grep - Kill Steam and helper processes using PIDs you see, e.g.
kill -9 <PID> - Relaunch Steam from your desktop launcher or run
steamin the terminal.
If Steam still won’t restart: troubleshooting checklist
If the restart completes but Steam immediately breaks again, the cause is usually cached web content, corrupted client state, or a permissions/network issue. Work through this list in order.
Check Steam status and your network
- Confirm Steam services aren’t degraded before spending time on local fixes.
- Try switching networks (Wi-Fi ↔ Ethernet) or restart your router if you suspect a DNS issue.
Clear Steam Web Browser cache
Steam’s UI relies on web content. Clearing the web cache often fixes stuck store pages, login loops, and blank panels.
- Windows: Steam stores web cache under your Steam user data directory (commonly within steamui cache). Close Steam first, then delete the web cache folder(s) and relaunch.
- macOS: Quit Steam, then remove the Steam web cache from the Steam user support directory, then reopen Steam.
- Linux: Quit Steam and remove the web cache content in your Steam user data directory, then relaunch.
If you want, tell me your OS and Steam installation type (Flatpak, native, etc.), and I’ll point to the exact folder path.

Verify Steam files (Windows/macOS)
Verification won’t delete your game files, but it can repair a broken Steam client installation.
- Open the Steam client.
- Go to Steam → Settings.
- Open Downloads.
- Click Steam Library Folders and ensure your path settings look normal (only as a sanity check).
- If Steam is fully broken, run the official Steam installer repair option for your platform (or reinstall Steam as a last resort).
Note: Steam verification steps vary more than people expect because the client’s installer and library locations change across versions. If you can’t open Steam’s settings, skip to the cache clearing and process-kill methods.
Reboot only the Steam components that keep hanging
When Steam won’t fully quit, kill both the main client and its web helpers. On Windows you’ll usually see multiple steamwebhelper instances.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- End Steam
- End all steamwebhelper (and any similarly named “Client WebHelper” processes)
- Restart Steam
Run Steam as Administrator (Windows)
If Steam can’t update components or fails to open due to permissions, running with elevated rights can help.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Restarting without fully exiting: Steam can report it’s already running if you only close the window.
- Stopping only the main process: Leaving steamwebhelper alive can keep the UI broken.
- Reinstalling too early: Cache resets and process kills solve a lot of issues without touching your library.
- Interrupting downloads mid-fail: If you restart repeatedly, you can fragment download progress. Let it settle after the fix.
FAQ
Will restarting Steam delete my games or downloads?
No. A restart (or a force quit) shouldn’t delete installed games. You may lose an in-progress download state, but your library items remain.
What if Steam says it’s already running after I restarted?
That usually means a leftover process is still alive. End Steam and every steamwebhelper process in Task Manager (Windows) or Activity Monitor (macOS), then relaunch.
Is it safe to kill steamwebhelper?
Yes. It’s a helper component. Killing it temporarily disrupts the Steam UI, but it will restart when you relaunch Steam.

If login fails after a restart, check service status and network/DNS. You may also need to clear Steam’s web cache if login loops persist.
Does restarting Steam fix shader compilation or performance stutter?
Sometimes. Restarting won’t fix hardware issues, but it can help after a failed update or corrupted client state. For performance stutter, focus on GPU drivers, game settings, and verifying game files.
Bottom Line
If Steam is responsive, restart it from the Steam menu for a clean exit. If it’s frozen or won’t fully close, force-close Steam and its steamwebhelper processes, then relaunch immediately.
For the quickest “stuck UI” fix, kill Steam’s web helper and restart. If problems persist, clear Steam’s web cache and confirm your network and Steam service status.
