Use Settings > System > Restart for a normal reboot when your Google TV responds. If it is frozen, unplug its power cable for one minute, reconnect it, and press Power on the remote. Use Settings > System > About > Factory reset only when you intentionally want to erase the device and set it up again.
A factory reset clears device data and cannot be undone. You should expect to download apps and content again and complete setup. The exact menus and physical-button procedure depend on whether you have a Chromecast with Google TV, a Google TV Streamer (4K), or a television made by another manufacturer.

Choose the right kind of reset
“Restart,” “power cycle,” and “factory reset” are different operations. Picking the least destructive option first prevents unnecessary data loss. A restart reboots a responsive device; a power cycle removes its power temporarily when it is unresponsive; a factory reset erases device data and returns it to initial setup. The word “reset” can refer to more than one of these actions, so check the actual command and its confirmation screen before proceeding.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

| The menus respond and you want a routine reboot | Settings > System > Restart | Reboots the device without deliberately wiping its setup | Not intended to erase your data |
| The screen or remote appears frozen | Unplug power for one minute, reconnect, then press Power | Removes power completely and starts the device again | Not a factory wipe |
| You are giving the device away, starting over, or troubleshooting after other steps fail | Settings > System > About > Factory reset | Returns the device to its setup state | Yes; the reset cannot be undone |
| The device cannot reach its menus | Use the model-specific button procedure, if documented | Starts a hardware-triggered factory reset | Yes; it is destructive |
If the device is responding, start with the menu restart for ordinary sluggishness or a temporary glitch. A frozen screen does not automatically mean the device needs to be wiped: Google recommends a one-minute power cycle for an unresponsive device. Save a factory reset for a deliberate clean start or a persistent problem after less destructive troubleshooting.

Restart a responsive Google TV from Settings
A menu restart is the correct first step for a sluggish interface, a temporary app problem, or a routine reboot when the device still accepts input. Google’s general Google TV troubleshooting guidance gives this route:
- From the Google TV home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Restart.
- Confirm if an on-screen prompt appears, then wait for the home screen to return.
The device may briefly show a blank screen or startup animation. Let it complete the reboot before trying the menus again. Menu labels can move slightly with the manufacturer or software version; if you do not see this path, open the device maker’s current support instructions for your exact model.
When a restart is enough
- An app stopped responding once but the rest of the interface works.
- Menus feel temporarily slow after extended use.
- You installed an update and need to reboot normally.
- You want to troubleshoot a transient playback or interface glitch without intentionally erasing the setup.
A restart is a reboot, not a way to prepare a device for a new owner. If your goal is to erase personal device data before handing it over, use the factory-reset process instead. Conversely, if you only want to reboot, do not choose a factory-reset command simply because it also restarts the device afterward.
Power-cycle a frozen or unresponsive device
If Google TV is stuck on one screen, does not respond, or never reaches the Settings menu, use a power cycle. Google TV Help’s instructions for an unresponsive device call for removing power for one minute. This procedure is deliberately simple and is different from a factory reset.
- Disconnect the Google TV device’s power cable. For a streaming dongle or separate box, remove its power lead rather than merely switching the television input.
- Leave it unplugged for one full minute.
- Reconnect the power cable.
- Press Power on the remote.
A power cycle does not intentionally erase apps, accounts, or settings. It is the lower-risk option to try when the interface has frozen and you cannot navigate to Restart in Settings. If the menus begin working again, you can then use the normal restart command when appropriate or continue with app and system troubleshooting.
Power cycle versus turning off the television
Turning the television off with its TV remote may leave a separately powered Chromecast or Google TV box running. The one-minute procedure requires removing power from the Google TV device itself. On an integrated Google TV television, the hardware and power arrangements differ; follow the television manufacturer’s instructions for a complete power disconnect.
Do not treat unplugging the device for one minute as a factory reset. It does not perform the documented erase or return the device to its initial setup. If the device remains unresponsive after the power cycle, consult the instructions for its exact model before trying a button-based reset.

Factory-reset Google TV through the menus
Factory reset is appropriate when you are preparing the device for another person, deliberately starting with a clean configuration, or have exhausted less destructive troubleshooting. It erases device data and cannot be reversed. Google advises trying other troubleshooting steps first when a device has a problem.
General menu route
- Open Settings from the Google TV home screen.
- Select System.
- Open About.
- Choose Factory reset.
- Read the warning, select the confirmation control, and wait for the reset and reboot to finish.
Google TV Help’s general Google TV instructions use that route, but a television manufacturer may place the command elsewhere or use different wording. The precise path can depend on the model and software version. If it is not present, use the manufacturer’s current directions rather than guessing at another command.
Pay particular attention to the confirmation screen. A normal Restart and a Factory reset have different outcomes, even though both can be followed by a reboot. Do not select a similarly named option when your intention is only to restart, and do not confirm a factory reset unless you are ready to erase the device.

What the reset removes and what to expect
Google warns that a factory reset erases device data. Google’s reset guidance also says that apps and content must be downloaded again. In practical terms, plan on setting the device up again and restoring the apps you use rather than expecting the old local setup to remain in place.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Installed applications and their device-stored data will need to be restored or downloaded again.
- Downloaded content on the device should not be expected to remain available after the reset.
- Network and personal configuration may need to be set up again.
- Plan to complete setup and sign in to services as prompted.
A factory reset erases data on the device; it is not a promise that every freeze or performance problem will disappear. It also does not mean your apps and content will be automatically restored to the device after setup. Be prepared to download what you need again and to go through the relevant sign-in or setup steps.
Reset a Chromecast with Google TV using its button
Use this procedure only for a Chromecast with Google TV. Identify the model before holding a button, because Google TV televisions and other streaming hardware can use different procedures. Google’s support instructions document this button method for Chromecast with Google TV when it is powered on.
- Leave the Chromecast plugged into the television and connected to power.
- Locate the physical button on the back of the Chromecast.
- Press and hold the button while the device is powered on.
- Watch the status LED. It first blinks yellow.
- When the LED turns solid white, release the button.
- The Chromecast begins its factory reset and restarts into initial setup.
This is a destructive reset, not a restart. The LED sequence is part of the model-specific procedure: do not release just because it begins blinking yellow. If the described pattern does not appear, confirm that the device is receiving power and that you have identified the Chromecast’s button. Do not apply this sequence to a television or another Google TV model.
Reset a Google TV Streamer (4K) using its button
The Google TV Streamer (4K) has a separate documented button sequence. It is not identical to the Chromecast instructions, so identify the hardware before starting.
- Connect the Streamer to the television and power it on.
- Find the button on the back of the Streamer.
- Press and hold it for approximately 10–12 seconds.
- The LED should begin blinking yellow.
- Release the button when the LED becomes solid white.
- Wait while the Streamer resets and restarts to setup.
Do not release at the first yellow blink; the solid-white indication is the release point in Google’s instructions. If the light behavior differs, stop and verify the model and current support directions rather than guessing. The physical button starts a factory reset, so the same data-loss warning applies as with a reset through Settings.
Google TV televisions and other models
“Google TV” describes the software experience, not one universal hardware design. A television from a partner manufacturer may have a different Settings hierarchy, a different reset button, or no equivalent button procedure at all. The documented rear-button steps above apply to the named streaming devices, not to every screen that runs Google TV.
- Check the television’s model number in its Settings, on the rear label, or in the original documentation.
- Search the manufacturer’s support site for that exact model and “factory reset.”
- Use the on-screen reset command supplied for the television rather than the Chromecast or Streamer sequence.
- If the TV is managed by an organization, confirm that you are authorized to erase it before proceeding.
If you are unsure whether you have a separate streaming device or an integrated Google TV television, check the product name and model before following physical-button instructions. A button sequence documented for a Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer should not be assumed to work on a television made by another manufacturer.
What to do before a factory reset
Because a reset is irreversible, work through lower-risk checks first when the problem is a freeze, lag, or one troublesome app. Google’s troubleshooting guidance puts other checks ahead of a factory reset; a reset is not the first response to every slow or frozen screen.
For a temporary freeze
- Try Settings > System > Restart if the menus respond.
- If they do not, perform the one-minute power cycle.
- When the device is responsive again, check for app or system updates as relevant.
These actions address common troubleshooting paths without immediately wiping the device. If one app is the only problem, focus on that app’s behavior and updates before considering a device-wide erase.

For slow or laggy behavior
- Restart the device.
- Install available app updates.
- Install any available system update.
- Close background apps or stop apps that are repeatedly misbehaving, using the controls available on your model.
- Power-cycle the device if the interface will not respond normally.
Google TV Help’s guidance for slow or laggy behavior includes restarting, checking app and system updates, and closing background apps. These are troubleshooting actions, not promises that every performance issue will be fixed. If the device continues to have problems after these steps, a reset may be a reasonable next option, but it still has no guaranteed outcome.
Confirm that you can set it up again
Before selecting the final confirmation, be sure you can complete the device’s setup again. You will need a way to connect it to a network and should be prepared to download apps and content again. Keep any account sign-in information you may need available. A factory reset clears device data; it does not preserve the previous local configuration for you to return to automatically.
If another person will use the device, explain that it will start at setup and that they will need to install their apps and sign in as needed. A reset does not require buying a new device, accessory, or repair tool: the documented procedures use the existing Settings menu, power cable, or model’s built-in button.

During the reset
Follow the on-screen instructions and allow the device to complete the reset and reboot. The exact display or timing can vary by model. If a screen asks you to confirm erasure, treat that prompt as the final check that you have selected a destructive factory reset rather than an ordinary restart.
At the first-run setup screen
After the reset, expect to set the device up again. The precise prompts vary, but you should plan to reconnect the device and restore the apps and content you want to use. Google’s instructions specifically caution that apps and content need to be downloaded again. Services may ask you to sign in again.
Do not assume that a factory reset preserves downloaded content or automatically restores the prior device setup. The reset returns the device to its setup state; it does not bring back the local apps, content, or preferences you had before.

The Restart option is missing
Menu organization varies by model and software version. Use the television or streaming-device manufacturer’s current instructions for the exact model. Google TV Help’s general route is Settings > System > Restart; if your interface differs, do not choose a destructive command by mistake while looking for it.
The remote does nothing
If the device itself is frozen, use the one-minute power cycle rather than trying repeatedly to navigate the menus. If the device becomes responsive afterward, you can proceed with ordinary troubleshooting. If it remains stuck, use only the physical reset procedure documented for its exact model; a hardware factory reset will erase data.
The LED never reaches the required state
Check the power connection and confirm that you are following the sequence for the correct hardware. Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer (4K) have distinct button instructions, although both describe a yellow blink followed by solid white as the release indication. A partner-manufacturer television may require an entirely different method. Do not substitute one device’s timing or button procedure for another’s.
A factory reset did not resolve the problem
A reset returns the device to its setup state, but Google’s guidance does not guarantee that it will fix every freeze or slow-down. If the same issue remains after setup, note the model and the behavior you see, and use the manufacturer’s or Google’s current troubleshooting guidance. Avoid repeating a destructive reset unless you have a reason to do so.

With the Streamer connected and powered on, hold the button on its back for 10–12 seconds. Release when the LED is solid white, after it begins blinking yellow. This is a factory reset.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWill factory resetting fix a slow or frozen Google TV?
It may be considered after less destructive troubleshooting, but a reset is not guaranteed to fix every problem. Try a restart or power cycle as appropriate, and check app and system updates before erasing the device.
Can I use the Chromecast button instructions on a Google TV television?
No. The documented physical-button steps apply to Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer (4K). An integrated Google TV television may use a different procedure, so check its exact model and manufacturer’s instructions.
The Bottom Line
Restart a responsive device from Settings > System > Restart. For an unresponsive device, unplug its power cable for one minute, reconnect it, and press Power. Factory reset only when you are ready to erase device data and set the device up again; use the physical-button procedure only for the exact model it documents.
