On a Linux server that uses systemd, run FFmpeg as a service and set Restart=on-failure with a deliberate RestartSec= delay. That lets systemd restart FFmpeg after an eligible failure exit. It will not fix every interruption: a process that remains alive while the stream is silent or frozen needs a separate health check, and input or output connection failures may need FFmpeg’s protocol-specific recovery options.
First identify what stopped working
“Crash” can mean several different things, and each calls for a different recovery layer. Check the process and service status, then match the symptom to the remedy.

- FFmpeg exited: configure the operating system’s service manager to restart it.
- A network input disconnected but FFmpeg is still running: use reconnect options supported by that input protocol.
- The network output failed: consider FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer recovery options, if they fit the output.
- The service is active but the stream has stopped producing audio: add a health check that can detect the lack of progress and trigger a restart.
- FFmpeg appears suspended in the background: prevent it from checking for console input with
-nostdin.
These layers are complementary, not interchangeable. A supervisor cannot repair every connection, and a protocol retry option cannot restart a process that has already exited.
Restart an exited FFmpeg process with systemd
For a Linux host using systemd, create a service unit so systemd manages FFmpeg as a long-running process. This illustrative template assumes a local audio file; replace the user, paths, input, output format and destination for your setup. It is not a tested, destination-specific configuration.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetThe angle-bracketed output values are placeholders in this example, not literal FFmpeg arguments. Substitute a format and destination compatible with your server and FFmpeg build. The 5s delay is an example choice, not a universal recommendation.
What the restart settings do
Restart=on-failure restarts the service after a nonzero exit, qualifying abnormal signal termination, or a timeout or watchdog failure. It does not restart a service after a clean, intentional stop, which preserves the ability to stop it deliberately. RestartSec=5s makes systemd wait before attempting a restart; choose a delay suitable for your environment. See the systemd service documentation for the current policy details. The systemd documentation describes RestartSec= as the time to sleep before restarting a service under the configured restart policy.
Prepare and enable the service
- Save the unit as
/etc/systemd/system/sleep-sounds.service, adapting the template and protecting any credentials. - Tell systemd to load the unit:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Start it now:
sudo systemctl start sleep-sounds.service. - Check whether it is running:
sudo systemctl status sleep-sounds.service. - Enable it to start at boot:
sudo systemctl enable sleep-sounds.service. - Inspect recent logs if it fails:
sudo journalctl -u sleep-sounds.service -n 100 --no-pager.
Keep stream keys and other credentials out of unit files readable by everyone on the machine. Use an appropriately protected configuration mechanism and restrict its permissions. Also confirm that the installed FFmpeg binary supports the required input and output formats: online FFmpeg manuals can document options unavailable in an older or differently built installation.

Loop and pace a local sleep-sounds file
For a local file that should play continuously, FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 for infinite looping. Put the option before the relevant -i. The example also uses -re to read the file at its native rate, which is useful when pacing file input as a live stream. Neither option supervises FFmpeg if it crashes.
/usr/bin/ffmpeg -nostdin -stream_loop -1 -re -i /srv/sounds/sleep-sounds.mp3 -c:a copy -f <your-output-format> <your-output-url>Whether copying the audio with -c:a copy is valid depends on the input codec, output container and destination. The appropriate pairing is not universal; verify compatibility for your actual stream endpoint.
Recover from a network input interruption
For supported HTTP inputs, FFmpeg provides protocol options such as reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_on_http_error, and retry-delay or retry-limit controls. The HTTP protocol documentation says reconnect reconnects automatically when disconnected before EOF, while reconnect_at_eof treats EOF as an error and causes reconnection, which can be useful for live or endless streams. Consult the FFmpeg protocols documentation for the available options and their exact behavior.

These are input protocol settings, not a general-purpose process supervisor. They apply only where the protocol and FFmpeg build support them, and they do not restart FFmpeg after it exits. Do not add HTTP flags to an unrelated input protocol and assume they will work.

FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer can attempt to recover from some output failures. Its documented controls include attempt_recovery, recovery_wait_time, and queue and retry behavior. The FIFO muxer documentation includes an RTMP output example that retries at one-second intervals; that example is not a universal setting for every destination.
Queue behavior involves a trade-off: dropping packets when the queue overflows can let processing continue but loses stream content. If packets are not dropped, a full queue can block encoding. Choose based on whether continuity or preserving every queued packet matters more for your use case, and validate the configuration against the actual output protocol.

Handle a silent or frozen stream
Restart=on-failure reacts to process and service failures; it cannot infer that audio has stopped merely because the process is still active. For a silent or frozen stream, establish a health check that measures the output or detects lack of progress, then have it restart the service when an appropriate condition is met.
There is no universally applicable command or threshold for this check: it depends on the output server and deployment. Decide what counts as unhealthy for your endpoint, how long to tolerate an interruption, and how to avoid restarting on expected gaps before implementing a watchdog.

Use -nostdin in an unattended FFmpeg invocation. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends it to prevent console-input checks when running as a background task. On Linux or macOS, redirecting standard input from /dev/null is another documented approach; on Windows, the corresponding device is NUL. See the FFmpeg FAQ.
Troubleshoot restart problems
- The service exits repeatedly: inspect
sudo journalctl -u sleep-sounds.service -n 100 --no-pager. Fix the underlying FFmpeg error, such as an invalid path, unsupported format or unreachable destination; restarting alone will not resolve a persistent configuration failure. - It does not restart after you stop it: that is expected for an intentional clean stop under
Restart=on-failure. Start it again withsudo systemctl start sleep-sounds.service. - The service says active, but listeners hear silence: systemd sees a running process, not necessarily healthy audio. Add an output-aware health check.
- The source disconnects but FFmpeg stays alive: use only reconnect options documented for the input protocol in use.
- The output drops and recovery stalls or loses audio: review FIFO retry and queue settings, including the consequences of packet dropping versus blocking.
- FFmpeg works interactively but not as a service: check the service user’s access to the working directory, input file and protected credentials; keep
-nostdinfor unattended use.
