How to Restart an Oracle Cloud YouTube Stream Automatically After a Crash

An Oracle Cloud YouTube stream needs recovery at the layer that failed: encoder process, guest OS or VM, or OCI infrastructure. Here’s how to configure and verify it.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To restart an Oracle Cloud YouTube stream after a crash, first identify what failed. If the VM is still running and only the encoder exited, configure the guest operating system’s service manager or another process supervisor to relaunch it. If the VM rebooted, configure the encoder to start at boot as well. YouTube’s auto-start setting can start a stream when an encoder connects, but it cannot restart a crashed encoder.

The exact setup depends on your VM’s operating system and encoder; there is no single restart command that applies to every Oracle Cloud deployment. The steps below show how to identify the failure, configure recovery at the right layer, and verify that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.

Identify which part of the stream failed

A YouTube stream on Oracle Cloud can fail at three different layers. Check the VM’s state and the encoder’s process or logs before changing settings: restarting the wrong layer may not restore the broadcast.

Failure What to check Recovery responsibility
Encoder process crashed or hung The VM is reachable, but the encoder is stopped or unresponsive. A guest OS service manager or other process supervisor must relaunch the encoder.
Guest OS or VM rebooted The VM restarted or is unavailable, then becomes reachable again. OCI instance actions address the VM; the guest OS must launch the encoder after boot.
OCI host or infrastructure failure OCI instance status or notifications indicate an infrastructure event. OCI may recover eligible instances. This is infrastructure recovery, not an encoder watchdog or a guarantee that YouTube reconnects.

Oracle says it automatically attempts recovery when an instance’s underlying infrastructure is unhealthy. Its documentation describes failure detection within one minute for standard VM recovery and, if immediate recovery is not possible, a healthy move and restart beginning within five minutes. Those timings describe OCI infrastructure behavior, not a guaranteed restoration time for your YouTube stream. Eligibility and behavior depend on the VM type and configuration. Configure the encoder to restart after a crash

For an encoder-process failure, use the service manager or supervisor for the VM’s operating system and the encoder you actually run. The OS and encoder are not specified here, so a universal service file or command would be unsafe: startup arguments, working directory, permissions, credential handling, and restart options vary.

  1. Confirm the encoder’s normal launch configuration. Record the executable, arguments, input or playlist, output settings, working directory, and the account that runs it. Confirm it can start successfully by hand before automating recovery.
  2. Set a restart policy in the selected supervisor. Configure it to relaunch after an unexpected exit, with a sensible delay or limit so a broken configuration does not create an endless rapid crash loop. Consult the documentation for your OS service manager or supervisor and encoder for the exact syntax.
  3. Arrange startup at boot. Enable the service or supervisor entry to launch when the guest OS starts. A crash-restart policy alone may not start the encoder after a VM reboot.
  4. Keep credentials protected. Store the stream key where the encoder can access it without exposing it in public scripts, logs, or broadly readable files. Restrict access to the VM and update the encoder if you reset the key in YouTube.
  5. Capture logs and alerts. Retain enough service and encoder logs to distinguish an exit, repeated restart, authentication problem, or failed ingest. Add an alert or a periodic check appropriate to your environment; a process running is not proof that the broadcast is healthy.
  6. Test both recovery paths. In a private or unlisted test, confirm the encoder returns after an unexpected exit and starts after a planned VM reboot. Check the resulting YouTube preview and stream health before relying on unattended operation.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live correctly

The encoder needs the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address,” so treat the key as a secret. If you reset it, replace the saved value in the encoder as well. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

  • LCD DISPLAY PANEL: Features an intuitive LCD screen that displays real-time status information including battery charge level, estimated runtime, load capacity, and input voltage for easy monitoring of your power protection system
  1. Copy the current ingest details. In Live Control Room, use the stream URL and key shown for the stream, then enter them in the encoder’s corresponding server and key fields. Do not substitute a URL from a different stream setup.
  2. Use RTMPS when supported. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Copy the RTMPS address provided in Live Control Room exactly and pair it with the stream key in the encoder. YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
  3. Choose auto-start and auto-stop deliberately. YouTube’s settings can allow the encoder to start or stop the stream. Auto-start affects YouTube’s stream state when an encoder connects; it does not monitor the VM or relaunch an encoder that has exited. Reused stream settings may carry these selections forward.
  4. Account for scheduled streams. If your workflow requires a manual start for a scheduled stream, reconnecting the encoder may only restore the preview. Follow the Live Control Room workflow and click Go Live when required; YouTube’s encoder instructions describe waiting for the preview before starting a scheduled stream. YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder

Verify recovery end to end

After the supervisor restarts the encoder, verify both the local process and the YouTube feed. A restart message in a service log confirms only that the process was launched; it does not establish that YouTube received usable video and audio.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check the supervisor and encoder logs for a successful start, connection, and continued operation.
  • Open the stream in Live Control Room and confirm that preview video and audio appear and that stream health is acceptable.
  • Check the actual stream state: confirm whether the stream started automatically or whether the scheduled workflow still needs a manual Go Live action.
  • Review the VM’s status and OCI notifications if the incident involved a reboot, outage, or infrastructure recovery.
  • Test with a private or unlisted stream before depending on unattended recovery. YouTube recommends testing ahead of time, checking preview and stream health, and verifying that a configured backup encoder can take over. YouTube Help: Live stream troubleshooting

Troubleshoot a stream that does not return

Symptom Likely area to check Next action
The encoder stays stopped after a crash. Supervisor policy, service logs, executable path, permissions, or startup configuration. Check whether the supervisor recorded an exit and attempted a restart. Validate the launch command and service account against your OS and encoder documentation.
The VM rebooted, but the encoder did not launch. Boot-time service configuration or a dependency that is unavailable during startup. Confirm the encoder service is enabled at boot and review startup logs and dependencies.
The encoder runs but cannot connect to YouTube. Stream URL, key, outbound connection, or encoder configuration. Compare the saved URL and key with the current values in Live Control Room. If the key was reset or is problematic, replace it in the encoder. YouTube also recommends checking the encoder, outbound connection, and stream health. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings
YouTube shows no preview, or video or audio is missing. Encoder output, selected input, audio/video settings, or ingest health. Inspect the encoder output and Live Control Room preview; a running process by itself does not confirm usable media. Use YouTube’s stream-health guidance to isolate the issue.
The stream is unstable despite a running encoder. Outbound bandwidth or network reliability between the VM and YouTube. Check the connection and leave upload headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% upload bandwidth headroom; this is guidance, not a guarantee of quality. YouTube Help: Streaming tips
The VM itself is unavailable or has restarted. OCI instance state, maintenance, or infrastructure notifications. Check OCI status and notifications to determine whether infrastructure recovery occurred, then verify that the guest OS and encoder came back.
