YouTube can automatically start a live broadcast when your encoder begins sending a signal, but it does not relaunch an encoder or computer that has crashed. To keep an Indian music stream running, set up the stream and reusable key in YouTube Studio, enable the start behavior you want, and test it. For recovery from a dead encoder, you need a separate recovery plan, such as a tested backup encoder or a cloud service.
What “restart automatically” means
There are three different situations that are easy to confuse:
- Starting a broadcast: YouTube can start the broadcast when it receives a signal from your encoder, if Auto-start is enabled.
- Recovering after a brief connection drop: The encoder may reconnect and resume sending, but the official YouTube guidance cited here does not promise a particular reconnection time or guarantee uninterrupted playback.
- Relaunching after an encoder or computer crash: YouTube cannot send a signal from an encoder that is no longer running. Its Auto-start setting is not a watchdog that restarts OBS, another encoder, or the host computer.
This guide covers the documented YouTube setup and testing steps, then explains options for a failure that stops the encoder itself.
Set up a reusable YouTube stream
- Open YouTube Studio and configure the broadcast. Go to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and set up the stream. YouTube describes the stream key as the information that tells your encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. You can use a custom key again for future broadcasts.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password. Anyone with the key may be able to send a feed to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the saved key in your encoder.
- Enter the stream details in your encoder. In the encoder’s streaming settings, enter the YouTube stream URL and the matching stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain that starting the encoder sends content to YouTube and stopping its outgoing content ends the stream.
- Choose Auto-start and Auto-stop deliberately. In the stream settings, enable Auto-start if you want YouTube to begin the broadcast when the encoder signal arrives. Enable Auto-stop only if you also want YouTube to stop the broadcast when the encoder stops. Reusing stream settings carries these selections forward, so check them when preparing a new stream.
- Save the encoder profile. A saved profile with the correct URL, key, and video settings avoids re-entering details every time. Do not include the stream key in screenshots, public instructions, or shared files.
YouTube summarizes the behavior this way: “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” The important distinction is that the encoder still has to be running and sending a signal.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
Run a short unlisted test before using the setup for a long bhajan, kirtan, Gurbani, or other Indian music broadcast. YouTube recommends testing the event, monitoring stream health and audio/video quality, checking archive files, and confirming that viewers can access the event.
- Start the encoder and confirm that the Live Control Room receives its signal and shows a preview.
- Open the watch page as a viewer. Confirm that it loads and that the stream is accessible with the intended visibility.
- Listen to the audio on a separate device. Check for silence, clipping, excessive loudness, and unwanted gaps between tracks.
- Check stream health and confirm that the picture and sound remain stable for the test duration.
- After ending the test, inspect the archive and verify that it contains the expected audio and video. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same automatic archive behavior for streams lasting longer than 12 hours.
Choose a bitrate for your actual connection and settings
There is no single correct bitrate for every music stream. YouTube’s recommendation depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; the upload connection must also sustain the outgoing stream. Run an upload speed test and leave headroom rather than setting the encoder at the maximum measured rate.

| Video setting | Codec | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | H.264 | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | H.264 | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | AV1 or H.265 | 3 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations for the listed settings, not universal targets. If your upload fluctuates or the stream health indicator warns of problems, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again. For exact recommendations for other codec, resolution, and frame-rate combinations, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings.
Plan for an encoder failure
If the encoder exits or the computer reboots, Auto-start alone cannot bring it back. You need a separate way to restore the outgoing signal. YouTube recommends testing a backup encoder for failover; that is a configured second encoder path, not a promise that a single failed encoder will automatically relaunch.

One encoder
A one-encoder setup is simpler, but after a crash someone may need to restart the encoder or computer. If the host loses power or internet, a local restart mechanism cannot restore service until those underlying conditions are fixed.
Backup encoder
For a higher-resilience setup, configure a backup encoder and verify that the YouTube player rolls over to it. YouTube’s suggested failover test is to stop the primary encoder or disconnect its Ethernet cable, then check that playback switches to the backup. A second encoder only helps if it is configured and able to send a usable feed; YouTube’s cited guidance provides no comparative uptime figures.

Copyright and music rights
Before leaving a music stream unattended, make sure you have the rights needed to stream each recording. A long-running or repeated broadcast does not make copyrighted music safe to use. Check the music’s license and YouTube’s applicable copyright requirements before going live.

| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not start the broadcast when the encoder starts | Auto-start is off, the encoder is not sending, or its stream details are wrong. | Check the Auto-start selection, verify that the encoder is running, and confirm its stream URL and key against Live Control Room. |
| The encoder cannot connect or YouTube does not receive its feed | The key may be incorrect or no longer current. | Copy the stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder. If the key was reset, update the encoder with the replacement. |
| The broadcast stops when the encoder stops | Auto-stop may be enabled, or the outgoing signal has ended. | Review Auto-stop if you do not want YouTube to end the broadcast when the encoder stops. If the encoder crashed, restart it or switch to a configured backup; Auto-start cannot generate a missing signal. |
| Video or audio becomes unstable | The bitrate may be too high for the available upload bandwidth, or the encoder settings may not match the intended output. | Check stream health, test upload speed, and lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate as needed. Test the changed settings before relying on the stream. |
| The stream key may have been exposed | Someone else could use the credential to send a feed. | Reset the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the new key. |
| The archive is missing or incomplete | The stream may have exceeded the documented automatic-archive duration or archive behavior may not match expectations. | Check the stream’s duration and archive settings. YouTube’s encoder guide documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not a blanket guarantee for longer streams. |
