To bring an FFmpeg YouTube stream back after a VPS reboot, run FFmpeg as a systemd service, enable that service for boot, and configure it to restart after a process failure. Then verify two separate things: that systemd launched FFmpeg and that YouTube Studio is receiving healthy media for the intended broadcast. A running process alone does not prove the stream has recovered.
What systemd can—and cannot—restart
Enabling a systemd unit makes it eligible to start during normal boot; it does not itself start the service immediately. Use a restart policy such as Restart=on-failure to relaunch FFmpeg after qualifying failures. These are separate recovery situations: boot persistence starts the service after a reboot, while the restart policy handles a process that exits while the machine is running.

Neither guarantees that FFmpeg can read its input, connect to YouTube, authenticate with the correct stream key, or send decodable media. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. Check both systemd and YouTube Studio after the reboot. See the YouTube encoder guidance and the systemd boot documentation.
Prepare a unit for your VPS
The following is a template, not a universal ready-to-run service. Replace the example account and paths, and adapt the FFmpeg arguments to your input, codecs, bitrate, and YouTube Live Control Room configuration. Invoke FFmpeg directly with ExecStart where practical so systemd supervises the encoder process itself.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.

Type=simple

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Save the unit as /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service only after checking the distribution’s conventions. Confirm the FFmpeg path with command -v ffmpeg and use its absolute path in the unit: systemd’s environment may have a different PATH from your interactive shell. The example input and output arguments are illustrative; use the ingest endpoint and key currently shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
Network ordering is not network readiness
After=network-online.target orders startup relative to that target; Wants=network-online.target requests it. Neither setting makes a network functional by itself. They are useful only if the host’s network stack provides the relevant wait-online behavior. The systemd documentation distinguishes this from network.target, which does not mean the connection is operational. If the service does not need a working connection before launch, remove these dependencies rather than assuming they guarantee connectivity.
Keep the stream key private
Do not paste a real key into a unit file that may be shared, a public repository, a command recorded in shell history, or logs. One option is a root-owned environment file with restrictive permissions, referenced by the unit with EnvironmentFile=; for example, set the file to be readable only by root. Environment variables may still be visible to privileged diagnostics. Depending on your systemd version and security requirements, systemd credentials or another dedicated secret mechanism may be more suitable. Rotate the key in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
Install, enable, and start the service
-
Check that the service account can read the input and execute FFmpeg, and that the absolute paths in the unit exist. If you use an environment file, check its path and permissions without printing the key into a shared log.

For the exact meaning of restart directives, delays, start limits, and installation behavior on your system, consult man systemd.service and man systemd.unit on the VPS. The systemd project’s NEWS recommends Restart=on-failure or Restart=on-abnormal for long-running services, but semantics and limits should be checked against the installed version. See the systemd project NEWS.
Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
Use the endpoint, stream key, and profile selected for the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS and lists RTMP/RTMPS protocols; its current encoder guidance includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, with constant bitrate encoding, up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Resolution and bitrate guidance depends on the profile, so consult YouTube’s current encoder table rather than treating one bitrate as universal. YouTube’s guidance may change; check the current encoder settings and stream health advice.

FFmpeg rejects an option: Check
ffmpeg -versionand local help such asffmpeg -h. FFmpeg options and their availability can vary by version, build, protocol, and muxer; consult documentation matching the installed build, including the FFmpeg reference and protocol documentation.Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
FFmpeg is running but the broadcast is stalled: systemd normally reacts to process exit, not to media that has stopped moving while the process remains alive. Inspect FFmpeg output and YouTube Studio’s stream health. Consider output recovery options, a health check/watchdog, or external monitoring only after validating them against the actual input and destination.
-
The service repeatedly restarts: Find the original error and check systemd’s start limits before forcing more restarts. A missing input, invalid key, unavailable source, or unsupported option needs correction; repeated attempts can obscure the cause.
Understand the two recovery layers
| Mechanism | What it handles | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| systemd boot enablement and service restart policy | Starts the unit during normal boot and can relaunch FFmpeg after a qualifying process failure. | That the input is available, YouTube is reachable, authentication succeeds, or healthy media reaches the intended broadcast. |
| FFmpeg or protocol output recovery | May attempt to recover a network output without the process exiting, depending on the relevant muxer/protocol options and build. | That the unit starts after reboot, or that recovery succeeded. Validate the option against the installed FFmpeg build and monitor the result. |
FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options concern HTTP input behavior; they are not a universal fix for a failed output connection. Treat source recovery and output recovery separately, and do not copy an option from documentation for a different FFmpeg build without checking local help.
