How to Restart a YouTube Stream Automatically on an OVHcloud VPS

Supervise FFmpeg with a Linux service and check YouTube’s broadcast settings separately: restarting the VPS encoder does not by itself guarantee the broadcast is live.

To restart a YouTube stream automatically on an OVHcloud VPS, run your encoder as a supervised Linux service and configure YouTube’s broadcast settings separately. A service manager such as systemd can restart a failed FFmpeg process; it cannot guarantee that YouTube has resumed the broadcast. Check both the local process and YouTube’s incoming stream after recovery.

How do I restart a YouTube stream automatically on an OVHcloud VPS?

There are two separate systems involved: your VPS runs the encoder and sends video to YouTube, while YouTube manages the broadcast that viewers watch. The VPS needs to detect and restart a failed encoder. YouTube’s auto-start/auto-stop settings—or API-managed broadcast transitions—determine what happens to the broadcast when the encoder feed stops and returns. YouTube explains that the stream key and server address connect an encoder to an ingest stream; a broadcast is a distinct event bound to a stream. The practical pattern is to configure the service manager to restart the encoder after failure, then verify that YouTube is receiving the feed and that the intended broadcast is live. A running service alone is not proof of a working stream.

Choose the right YouTube broadcast workflow

Use the workflow that matches how you publish. A recurring feed and a scheduled event do not necessarily behave the same way when an encoder reconnects.

Workflow What to configure What to verify after a restart
Persistent or recurring feed Use the intended YouTube stream URL and stream key. Check whether auto-start and auto-stop are enabled for that stream. Confirm YouTube receives data and that the broadcast is in the expected state. With auto-start enabled, YouTube says the broadcast starts when video arrives on its bound stream.
Scheduled or API-managed event Bind the event broadcast to the intended stream and manage transitions according to the API workflow. Do not assume an encoder restart alone transitions a scheduled event to live. Check both the stream’s ingest status and the broadcast’s lifecycle state. YouTube’s encoder help flow for scheduled streams instructs users to start the encoder, wait for preview, and click Go live.

YouTube documents that one broadcast is bound to one stream, while a stream can be reused for broadcasts. For API-managed workflows, its lifecycle guidance says that an active stream status means YouTube is receiving encoder data; with auto-start enabled, a separate transition-to-live API call is not needed. How do I make FFmpeg restart if it crashes?

Use a service manager rather than a shell loop or an interactive terminal session. The example below is a systemd implementation pattern: adapt the executable path, service user, environment file, working directory, and FFmpeg command to your distribution and setup. OVHcloud describes its VPS as a full-root-access virtual machine and assigns administration of its security and stability to the VPS administrator; this example is not an OVHcloud-endorsed unit file. 1. Prepare a restartable encoder command

Run FFmpeg in the foreground as the service’s main process. Do not background it with & or detach it with a tool such as nohup; systemd needs to track the process so it can tell when it exits. Keep the YouTube ingest address and stream key in a protected environment file rather than exposing the key in a publicly readable script or command history.

For example, create a root-owned environment file at /etc/streamer/ffmpeg.env with restrictive permissions, then define variables such as YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY. The stream URL and key must match the intended YouTube stream. YouTube treats the key as the credential-like value that lets the encoder send to the correct feed; if you reset a compromised key, update the VPS configuration too. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings

A sample command shape is:

/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/video/loop.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv "${YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL}/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}"

This is only a command pattern, not a universal FFmpeg recipe. It assumes a compatible input and output format for stream copy; if YouTube rejects the media or the input codecs are unsuitable, configure explicit encoding parameters for the source instead. Protect the stream key from logs and from access by untrusted users.

  • 16TB (4 x 4TB) 7.2K 6Gb/s SATA 3.5" HDDs in RAID
  • Hard drives and memory upgrades included separately NOT installed, installation required.

2. Create the systemd unit

Create /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service and adjust every path and identity to your VPS:

[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube encoder
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target

[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
Group=streamer
EnvironmentFile=/etc/streamer/ffmpeg.env
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /srv/video/loop.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv ${YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL}/${YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY}
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5

[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target

Restart=on-failure and RestartSec=5 express the intended policy in this example: restart after a detected failure and wait before trying again. Confirm the directive behavior and unit syntax against the systemd manual for your distribution before deploying. A planned stop, a configuration error, invalid credentials, or a command that remains running while no longer sending video may require a different response than a process crash.

3. Load, enable, and start the service

  1. Reload unit definitions: sudo systemctl daemon-reload.
  2. Enable startup at boot and start the encoder: sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service.
  3. Check the service state: sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service.
  4. Read recent service output: sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager.

To test recovery, deliberately stop or terminate the encoder in a controlled maintenance window, then confirm that the service manager starts it again. Avoid testing by exposing a live stream key or disrupting a broadcast that viewers depend on.

Check YouTube’s auto-start and broadcast state

In YouTube Studio, inspect the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings rather than assuming they are enabled. YouTube says that when these settings are on, starting or stopping from the encoder controls broadcast start and stop; reused stream settings carry those selections forward. The API describes auto-start as starting the broadcast when video begins on its bound stream. Auto-stop is documented as stopping it around one minute after the channel owner stops sending video. YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings · Google for Developers: LiveBroadcasts

For API-controlled broadcasts, YouTube’s lifecycle guide describes transition requests and status checks. It says transitions typically take 5 to 10 seconds, though some can take up to a minute; these are documented product timings, not a guarantee of recovery time. Check the stream resource’s status.streamStatus for active to confirm YouTube is receiving encoder data. For a scheduled stream using YouTube Studio, follow its preview and Go live workflow if auto-start is not enabled. Troubleshoot a restart that does not restore the stream

  • The service is stopped or repeatedly restarting: Inspect systemctl status and the journal for an invalid executable path, permissions problem, missing input file, malformed FFmpeg command, or unavailable environment file. Correct the reported issue, then restart the unit.
  • The service says active, but YouTube has no incoming feed: A running process does not prove it is sending valid video. Check FFmpeg’s journal output, VPS network access, the YouTube ingest URL, the stream key, and whether the input is still producing frames. Verify ingest in YouTube Live Control Room or, for API workflows, check for streamStatus=active.
  • YouTube receives video but the event is not live: Check the broadcast’s auto-start setting and lifecycle state. For a scheduled event, the Studio workflow may require waiting for preview and clicking Go live; API-managed events may require a transition when auto-start is off.
  • YouTube stops the broadcast after the feed ends: Review auto-stop behavior. The API reference says the stop occurs around one minute after the channel owner stops streaming video, so a short encoder outage can affect broadcast state depending on the configuration.
  • A stream key was reset or exposed: Update the key used by the service and restrict access to its environment file. YouTube says resetting a compromised key requires updating the encoder.
  • The VPS itself is unreachable or its firewall is misconfigured: Investigate the host’s networking and firewall configuration. OVHcloud’s rescue mode can help diagnose network problems, repair a broken OS, or fix a misconfigured software firewall, but booting into rescue mode requires a reboot and interrupts running services. Account for ownership, security, and stream content

An OVHcloud VPS gives you control over the operating system, but you are responsible for maintaining its security and stability. Keep the OS and FFmpeg maintained, limit access to the service account and stream key, and test recovery without assuming a restart will be invisible to viewers. Recovery depends on the process exiting in a way the service manager detects, working credentials and network access, and YouTube accepting the feed; no uninterrupted playback or fixed reconnect time is established.

Automation does not change YouTube’s content rules. Use video and audio you have the rights to stream, and review YouTube’s guidance on streaming and channel content before looping material. YouTube Help: Streaming tips

Or let it run in the cloud
