Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo restart a YouTube stream automatically from a Vultr VPS, run your encoder as a systemd service with a restart policy, enable it at boot, and configure the encoder to reconnect after network interruptions. These are separate safeguards: systemd can relaunch an exited process, but it cannot make a bad stream key, failed VPS, or unhealthy YouTube ingest work. Test both the process restart and the actual YouTube preview before relying on unattended streaming.
What automatic restart does—and does not—cover
There are two recovery layers to configure:
- Process recovery: systemd starts the encoder when the VPS boots and can restart it after the process exits.
- Connection recovery: the encoder retries its YouTube connection after a transient disconnect. YouTube Live Control Room also provides auto-start and auto-stop controls for encoder streams.
These controls complement one another, but they do not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. They cannot resolve a persistent authentication or endpoint error, restore a failed VPS, or provide adequate CPU, memory, or network capacity. Vultr’s instructions describe systemd mechanics and an OBS deployment example, not a tested service file that fits every encoder installation.

Set up the YouTube stream destination
Get the current stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the stream setup in Live Control Room. Create or select the encoder stream.
- Copy the current stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s output settings. Treat the key as a secret: YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” If the key is exposed or no longer valid, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- Turn on YouTube’s auto-start option if you want the encoder to start the configured stream. Auto-start is a YouTube-side setting; it does not replace systemd or the encoder’s reconnect settings.
Prefer RTMPS when the encoder supports it
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Retrieve the RTMPS address from the lock icon beside the Stream URL field in Live Control Room rather than assuming the ordinary RTMP address is interchangeable. Google’s RTMPS guidance specifies the rtmps protocol, port 443, and the server hostname for SNI authentication. A client must support RTMPS/TLS and use the supplied endpoint correctly.
Configure the encoder for reconnects
Enable the encoder’s own automatic reconnect option in addition to systemd recovery. Vultr’s OBS tutorial shows the Automatically Reconnect settings, including retry delay and a maximum retry count. Those values are tutorial-specific examples, not universal settings; choose retry behavior appropriate to your service and inspect the encoder’s logs if it exhausts retries.

Retries help with temporary disconnects. They do not fix a reset key, wrong RTMP/RTMPS endpoint, unsupported TLS connection, or persistent VPS/network failure. If you use OBS, Vultr’s example assumes a desktop environment and its particular OBS deployment. Do not assume a graphical OBS session will be available or start correctly on every headless boot without configuring that environment.
Create and enable a systemd service
Create a unit for the actual encoder command on your VPS. The executable, arguments, service user, working directory, and environment variables must match your installation; the example below shows the relevant systemd structure, not a copy-and-paste OBS or FFmpeg command.

- Save the unit as
/etc/systemd/system/youtube-encoder.service(or choose another clear service name and use it consistently). - Reload systemd after creating or editing it:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable startup at boot:
sudo systemctl enable youtube-encoder.service. - Start it now:
sudo systemctl start youtube-encoder.service. - Check the service:
sudo systemctl status youtube-encoder.service. For recent service output, usesudo journalctl -u youtube-encoder.service -n 100 --no-pager.
Vultr’s systemd tutorial demonstrates Restart=always. It can also repeatedly launch a program that immediately fails, creating a restart loop. Check status and logs, correct the underlying command, permissions, environment, or connection issue, and then restart the service. systemd being active only confirms process state—not that YouTube is receiving a healthy picture and sound.
Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. The values below are YouTube’s H.264 examples, not universal targets for other codecs or resolutions. Check the official settings page for the current recommendations for your exact output.
| H.264 output example | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate mode: use CBR as listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Audio and codec: select a listed codec your encoder supports, and confirm that its output matches YouTube’s current requirements.
Settings and accepted configurations can change. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance before configuring a production stream.

Test recovery before leaving the stream unattended
- Start a test stream with representative video movement and audio. In Live Control Room, confirm the incoming preview and review the stream health indicator.
- Confirm systemd reports the service as active and inspect its logs for encoder errors.
- Deliberately stop the encoder process in a controlled test. Check that systemd starts it again, then verify that YouTube receives the feed and the preview recovers.
- Test a transient connection interruption or your planned failover method where practical. YouTube recommends testing the stream and failover rather than relying only on an encoder’s local status.
A successful process restart is only one result to verify. The broadcast may still fail to appear if the endpoint or key is wrong, the encoder cannot reconnect, or YouTube reports unhealthy ingest.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS SSL or TLS error | Protocol, exact RTMPS endpoint, port, and encoder TLS support; Google’s RTMPS guidance also requires the server hostname for SNI. | Use the RTMPS URL supplied in Live Control Room, confirm the client supports RTMPS, and use port 443 when required by that endpoint. |
| Connection timeout | Endpoint spelling, network reachability, and whether the encoder supports the selected RTMPS connection. | Correct the destination or use a compatible encoder; a retry loop will not cure a persistent connection problem. |
| Authentication or stream start failure | Whether the key is current and belongs to the selected YouTube stream. | Copy the current key from Live Control Room. If it was reset or exposed, update the encoder with the replacement. |
| Service keeps restarting | systemctl status, the journal, executable path, arguments, permissions, user, working directory, and environment. |
Fix the first underlying startup error before allowing repeated retries to continue. |
| Service is active but no video appears | Encoder output logs, URL and key, YouTube preview, and stream health. | Correct the output configuration and confirm ingestion in Live Control Room; service status alone is not proof of a working stream. |
| Dropped frames or resource pressure | VPS CPU and memory use, encoder load, output resolution/frame rate, and network capacity. | Monitor the server during a representative test and reduce the encoding workload or choose a more capable setup if resources are insufficient. Vultr’s tutorial warns about dropped frames at high CPU usage; its example threshold is not a universal engineering limit. |
Plan VPS capacity and YouTube archive behavior carefully
Vultr’s OBS tutorial, updated April 1, 2025, lists 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth as prerequisites for its example streaming-server setup. Those are figures from that tutorial—not a universal minimum for every encoder, a guarantee of performance, or a statement of Vultr’s current plan offer. Actual capacity needs depend on the encoder, codec, resolution, frame rate, and workload.
Do not infer a universal monthly bandwidth requirement or VPS cost from one bitrate. Runtime, combined audio/video bitrate, protocol overhead, plan terms, region, and current Vultr billing details all affect the result. Check the current Vultr plan and bandwidth terms for the server you choose.
