Those steps can help restore the encoder after an app restart, but they do not guarantee that YouTube will put a scheduled event back on air automatically. Treat OBS recovery and YouTube broadcast recovery as separate jobs, and test both in YouTube Live Control Room before leaving a stream unattended.
What automatic restart can—and cannot—do
There are at least two separate things to recover: the encoder process on the Mac mini and the YouTube broadcast. OBS’s launch parameter can tell OBS to start streaming when it opens. macOS launchd can manage jobs and run scripts. Neither feature guarantees that a YouTube connection will resume the same event, that a scheduled stream will become public, or that every network outage will recover without an operator.

YouTube’s stream settings include auto-start and auto-stop controls that allow starting or stopping from the encoder. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented workflow still has the operator wait for the preview in Live Control Room and select Go live. The exact result depends on the event and its settings, so do not assume that restarting OBS is equivalent to restarting the public broadcast.
Prepare YouTube and OBS before automating anything
1. Choose the correct YouTube stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the encoder stream or scheduled event you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s stream configuration. YouTube describes the key as the password and address that tell the encoder where to send the feed; treat it like a credential. Do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it in a script or log that others can read.
- Check that OBS is configured for the intended YouTube destination. Keep a record of which event the configuration is meant to serve, especially if you use more than one stream key or scheduled broadcast.
2. Review YouTube’s start and stop behavior
In YouTube Studio’s stream settings, review the auto-start and auto-stop options. These settings govern whether an encoder can start or stop streaming from its side; they do not establish that every scheduled event will automatically go public after an OBS restart. For a scheduled stream, use the Live Control Room preview and Go live control as YouTube’s documented workflow requires.

3. Check OBS’s launch configuration
Make sure the OBS profile, scene collection, audio sources, and stream destination you want are available when OBS opens. A launch parameter cannot correct a wrong scene, missing media source, muted audio input, or incorrect stream key. OBS’s documented macOS launch form is to run open -a "OBS" --args followed by the launch parameter. To ask OBS to start streaming on launch, use:
open -a "OBS" --args --startstreaming
This is the OBS launch instruction, not a complete unattended-recovery system. It starts streaming when OBS launches and its stream configuration is ready; it does not itself make macOS relaunch OBS after a crash, decide when an internet outage is over, or click Go live in YouTube Live Control Room.

Use macOS launchd for process supervision—with care
Apple documents launchd as the macOS system for managing daemons and agents and running shell scripts. Its job configuration can be set to keep a process running, but Apple also warns that jobs that respawn too quickly can be throttled. This makes launchd a process-supervision option, not a promise of continuous YouTube streaming.

A user LaunchAgent is generally tied to a logged-in user session. Do not treat it as equivalent to a system daemon or assume it will provide an unattended graphical OBS workflow in every login, logout, or reboot state. The available documentation establishes the general launchd capabilities and caveats, but not a complete, current OBS-specific launchd recipe for every macOS and OBS version. Avoid copying an unverified property list or restart loop into a production Mac.

If you configure a launchd job, define exactly what it is responsible for—starting OBS, running a wrapper script, or supervising a process—and make its behavior observable. Test the configuration on the Mac mini and inspect its logs and actual results. Do not interpret a successful process restart as proof that YouTube is live.
Choose an appropriate stream connection and encoding setup
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP, for compatible encoders. Confirm the server URL provided for your stream and that OBS supports the selected protocol; do not copy an example endpoint from an unrelated setup.

Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance for resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval rather than relying on generic numbers. The appropriate settings depend on the chosen output and connection. YouTube also recommends testing before a stream and monitoring stream health and messages while it runs.

Test the complete recovery path
Before relying on unattended operation, arrange a controlled test when you can monitor both the Mac and YouTube Live Control Room. Do not use an important public event as the first test.
- Start the intended event and confirm that OBS is using the expected profile, scene, audio, stream URL, and key.
- Verify that YouTube receives the encoder feed and that the preview and stream-health indicators appear as expected.
- Test the failure you want to recover from: close or restart OBS for an application-restart test, and separately test a brief network interruption if you need to understand outage behavior. Change one condition at a time so you can tell what recovered.
- Watch whether OBS actually reopens, whether it reconnects to the intended destination, and whether the YouTube preview returns.
- For a scheduled event, check whether the broadcast is actually public. If YouTube presents the preview and requires Go live, an encoder restart alone did not complete the broadcast recovery.
- Confirm picture and sound continue after recovery. Review OBS and YouTube messages, and note any action an operator still needs to take.
YouTube’s guidance recommends testing and monitoring stream health. No particular Mac mini, macOS, OBS, and YouTube version combination is established here as tested, so verify the actual setup you will run.
Troubleshoot common restart failures
- OBS opens but does not stream: check that the launch used
--startstreaming, that the stream configuration is present, and that the selected destination and key are correct. - OBS streams but YouTube is not publicly live: distinguish encoder input from broadcast status. Check the preview and event controls in Live Control Room; a scheduled stream may still require Go live.
- OBS starts with the wrong picture or no audio: verify the profile, scene collection, media sources, and audio routing loaded at launch. A process restart does not repair a bad or unavailable scene source.
- OBS does not return after a crash: the launch parameter only controls what OBS does when launched. Check whether the process manager or script actually starts it, and inspect job behavior and logs. If using
launchd, account for its rapid-respawn throttling caveat. - The stream fails after a network interruption: confirm network access, the configured server URL, and YouTube’s stream-health messages. A process supervisor cannot restore an unavailable connection by itself.
- The setup works only while someone is logged in: review whether the job is a user LaunchAgent and what session state it requires. Do not assume a logged-out or rebooted Mac will behave like an active desktop session.
- The encoder rejects the connection: recheck the current YouTube stream URL, key, and compatible protocol settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS when the encoder supports it.
