Live Control Room

How to Restart a YouTube Live Stream Without Changing Its Link

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the YouTube broadcast is still upcoming or live, reconnect your encoder to the existing event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room using that event’s Stream URL and stream key. Check the preview and live status when the feed returns. Don’t create a replacement event or click End Stream if you want to continue the same broadcast. If YouTube has marked it complete, its documentation does not describe reopening that broadcast as live; schedule a new event and share its link instead.

First, check whether the existing event can continue

The viewer-facing broadcast and the encoder’s incoming feed are related but distinct. The broadcast is the event and watch page viewers use; the encoder sends video to YouTube using the event’s Stream URL and stream key. Reconnecting the feed to an event that remains upcoming or live may let you continue with that event. A key change is not a way to change the viewer-facing link.

What you see What to do What to expect about the link
The event is still upcoming or live, but the encoder feed stopped. Reconnect the encoder to the existing event with its Stream URL and key, then check the preview and status. Continue with the existing event; YouTube does not guarantee every interruption case will retain a usable link.
The encoder rejects the key, or you need to replace a compromised key. Retrieve the current key in Live Control Room, or reset it if necessary, then update the encoder. A key change is not documented as changing the broadcast link.
The event was ended or its status is complete. Schedule a new broadcast for another live session. Do not assume the completed event can be restarted as live; the new event may have a new link.

Google’s API documentation defines a completed broadcast as over, with YouTube stopping video transmission. The official documentation does not specify a universal reconnect grace period for every Studio workflow. Auto-stop behavior is conditional, not a general promise about how long an interrupted feed can be offline.

Reconnect the encoder to the same YouTube event

  1. Open the existing event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and select the scheduled stream or current event from Manage. Do not create a replacement event for a temporary interruption.
  2. Check the encoder’s connection details. In the event’s stream settings, verify the YouTube Stream URL and the stream key associated with it. Confirm that the encoder is configured for the correct event.
  3. Start or reconnect the encoder. Use the encoder’s normal start or reconnect control. Wait for video to appear in the Live Control Room preview.
  4. Confirm the event is live. For a scheduled stream that has not yet gone live, YouTube’s setup instructions say to wait for the preview and click Go live. If the event is already live, check its status and playback instead.
  5. Avoid ending the event. Do not click End Stream if your goal is to resume the same broadcast. Once an event is complete, the reviewed YouTube documentation does not describe restoring it to live.

YouTube’s encoder setup explains that a watch page is created for the stream, while its settings instructions use the server URL and stream key to connect the encoder. Keep the existing event selected throughout recovery.

If the stream key or connection is rejected

Check or replace the key

Copy the current stream key from Live Control Room and enter it in the encoder’s settings for this event. Reset the key only when needed, such as if it may have been exposed. After a reset, replace the old key in the encoder; the reset key will not work until the encoder uses the new one. YouTube’s key instructions do not say that resetting a key changes the viewer-facing broadcast link.

Verify the URL, protocol, and encoder support

  • Confirm that the encoder has the Stream URL shown for the existing event, rather than an old or mistyped address.
  • Check that the protocol configured in the encoder matches the event’s settings. If using RTMPS, verify that the encoder supports RTMPS and meets YouTube’s connection requirements.
  • If the connection still fails, review YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for encoder connection errors and check the encoder’s own error message and network configuration.

YouTube’s RTMPS guidance specifically calls out URL or protocol mistakes and lack of RTMPS support in the encoder as possible causes of connection errors.

How to avoid losing the event during a future interruption

  • Keep a record of which encoder profile uses each event’s Stream URL and key, and update the profile whenever you reset a key.
  • Test backup-encoder failover before relying on it. YouTube recommends stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable during a test, then verifying that playback rolls to the backup.
  • For planned streams, YouTube recommends setting up ahead of time—at least two hours before the stream—and starting encoders at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. These are preparation recommendations, not reconnection guarantees.
