Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To loop a video on YouTube Live with FFmpeg, copy the ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1, a real-time input, and a live-compatible output. YouTube’s standard encoder workflow applies in India; the official guidance cited here does not specify different India-only FFmpeg settings. The example below is a starting point, not a tested command or a universal bitrate prescription.
Before you start
- Your channel must meet YouTube’s livestream eligibility requirements: YouTube says it must be verified, have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the user must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming requirements; eligibility cannot be determined from the FFmpeg setup alone.
- Install an FFmpeg build that includes the encoders used below, including
libx264and AAC support. The cited documentation does not establish which encoders are included in your particular build. - Have a local video file with an audio track if your stream needs sound, and a reliable outbound internet connection. Check your actual upload capacity at the place and time you intend to stream; there is no India-wide upload-speed guarantee in YouTube’s guidance.
Get the YouTube stream URL and key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
- Open the Stream tab in Live Control Room and create or select the stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that active stream. YouTube describes the stream key as the encoder’s credential for sending a feed it can accept. Use the exact ingest address supplied in Live Control Room rather than guessing a server URL. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, include it in a screenshot, or share a command containing it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room using YouTube’s stream settings.
Choose output settings that fit your source and connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery where supported. For a broadly compatible example, the command below re-encodes to H.264 and AAC rather than assuming the source can be copied unchanged.
- Resolution and frame rate: Match the output to the video and choose a level your connection can sustain. YouTube publishes bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate in its encoder settings guidance; select the applicable row for your chosen output rather than treating the sample bitrate below as universal.
- Bitrate and headroom: Set a constant video bitrate suitable for the selected output, then add audio bitrate when estimating total outbound load. YouTube recommends available upload bandwidth be 20% above the total stream bitrate. Shared networks can reduce the capacity available to your stream, so a reliable connection and a local test matter. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Keyframes: The sample uses a two-second interval for a 30 fps source. If your source frame rate differs, adjust the GOP/keyframe values so the interval remains about two seconds and within YouTube’s four-second maximum.
- Transport: Use the active stream’s supplied RTMP or RTMPS URL. Prefer RTMPS when the supplied ingest endpoint supports it.
Run FFmpeg to loop the file
Replace every placeholder, including the file path and ingest URL/key, before running this illustrative command. It assumes a 30 fps source and a 4,500 kb/s video target; confirm the bitrate is appropriate for your selected resolution, frame rate, and upload capacity.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i "/path/to/video.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 4500k -maxrate 4500k -bufsize 9000k
-pix_fmt yuv420p -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "<YOUTUBE_RTMP_OR_RTMPS_INGEST_URL>/<STREAM_KEY>"
What the important options do
-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. FFmpeg documents-1as infinite looping.-rereads the file at its native frame rate, which is useful when using a file as a live source.-inames the local video file. Keep the input options before it as shown.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacencode video and audio to common YouTube ingest formats.-b:vand-maxrateset the target and maximum video bitrate in this example;-bufsizesets the rate-control buffer.-g 60 -keyint_min 60gives a 60-frame interval, which is two seconds at 30 fps. Change these values for a different frame rate.-f flvselects the output container used for the RTMP-style stream. FFmpeg’s formats documentation includes an RTMP example using H.264, AAC, FLV, and explicit stream maps.
If your file has no audio stream, or multiple tracks, the example may need explicit stream mapping; FFmpeg’s example demonstrates -map options. Verify the file’s streams and adapt the command rather than assuming every input has the same layout. Do not assume an arbitrary source can be copied unchanged into YouTube ingest; the documented example re-encodes.
Preview and start the broadcast
- Start FFmpeg and check that it reports a running output without repeated connection or encoding errors.
- Return to Live Control Room and wait for the encoder preview. Confirm that both picture and sound are correct.
- For a scheduled stream, select Go live in Live Control Room after checking the preview. YouTube’s encoder workflow separates sending the encoder feed from publishing the scheduled stream.
- Check the public watch page and monitor the stream’s audio and video while it runs.
YouTube’s operational tips recommend setting up at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand. These are preparation recommendations, not FFmpeg requirements. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; do not treat an indefinitely looping command as a guarantee of uninterrupted or permanent availability.

Stop the stream safely
When finished, end the broadcast through YouTube and stop the FFmpeg process. A loop continues until it is stopped or interrupted, so leave time to confirm the ending in Live Control Room rather than simply assuming the local process ending has published the intended result.
Troubleshoot common failures
- FFmpeg cannot connect: Check that the ingest URL is copied from the active Live Control Room stream, that the stream key is current, and that the chosen RTMP or RTMPS endpoint matches the URL YouTube provided.
- YouTube shows no preview: Confirm FFmpeg is still running and sending output, then recheck the URL/key and encoder output for errors. Wait for the feed to appear before publishing.
- Video or audio is missing: Check that the input file contains the expected stream. If necessary, use explicit
-mapoptions to select its video and audio tracks; the input layout is not established by this template. - Connection is unstable or the stream buffers: Compare total stream bitrate with actual available upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce output bitrate or resolution/frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the chosen settings, and avoid relying on a shared or unreliable network without testing it.
- FFmpeg reports an encoder is unavailable: The command requires an FFmpeg build with the named encoders. Use a build that includes them or adjust the encoding choices to the encoders available in your installation.
- The key may have been exposed: Reset it in Live Control Room, then update the command or script with the replacement. Never leave the real key in a public post or shared screenshot.
