YouTube does not document a setting that automatically restarts a broadcast after it has ended. Its auto-start and auto-stop controls let an encoder start or stop streaming; they are not a promise to relaunch a finished broadcast. To start a fresh broadcast automatically, you need an encoder or automation system that supports that behavior, and you should verify it with that tool’s current instructions and a test.
First, distinguish an ended stream from a dropped connection
“Restart” can mean different things. A temporary connection interruption may allow an encoder to reconnect, while a completed broadcast has ended on YouTube. Continuing a long event is another case. YouTube’s published guidance does not treat these as the same feature or guarantee that an ended broadcast will relaunch automatically.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say to end a stream by stopping content from the encoder. They also state that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archive rule concerns the ended broadcast; it does not restart it. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions
What YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls do
YouTube describes these controls as allowing you to start or stop streaming from your encoder. They govern the encoder’s start/stop behavior; the cited guidance does not say that they relaunch a broadcast after it has ended. If stream settings are reused, the auto-start and auto-stop choices are copied with them, but that still is not an after-end restart guarantee. Manage live stream settings

To begin a broadcast with an encoder, use Live Control Room to obtain the stream URL and stream key, then configure the encoder and start sending the stream. For current setup steps, see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. If YouTube reports a start error, its troubleshooting guidance says to obtain a stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder; this addresses a start problem, not automatic relaunch after a completed broadcast. Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream
Choose the right approach for what you want to happen
| Approach | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube auto-start/auto-stop | Lets the encoder start or stop streaming, according to the selected settings. | Do not rely on it to restart a broadcast after completion. YouTube Help |
| Live Redirect | Hands viewers off after a stream ends to a Premiere or another live stream. | Prepare the destination first. This redirects viewers; it does not restart the ended broadcast. YouTube notes that viewers may need to wait about two seconds for their screens to reload. YouTube Help |
| Encoder or automation software | May be able to automate a new broadcast, depending on the specific tool. | Check its current instructions and test whether it reconnects after an interruption, creates a new YouTube event, or resumes an event that remains open. YouTube’s cited guidance does not establish a universal third-party behavior. |
Test an automatic relaunch before depending on it
- Define the desired result. Decide whether you need reconnection after a brief interruption, continuation of a long-running event, or a fresh broadcast after YouTube has ended the previous one.
- Check YouTube settings. In Live Control Room, review the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings, treating them only as encoder start/stop controls—not as a restart feature. Manage live stream settings
- Check the encoder’s current documentation. Confirm what it does when a broadcast finishes and whether it creates a new YouTube event. Do not assume reconnect behavior means it can relaunch a completed event.
- Run an unlisted test. Observe the result in Live Control Room and confirm which event is live, what viewers see, and how the ended stream is archived. Treat this as a practical verification step, not a YouTube guarantee.
- Monitor the test. YouTube recommends testing in advance, previewing in Live Control Room, and monitoring stream health and audio/video. After the event has stopped on YouTube, stop the encoder as appropriate and verify any local recording you need. See YouTube live streaming tips and encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Use Live Redirect when viewers need a next destination
If the goal is to keep viewers watching something after the current broadcast ends, configure Live Redirect to send them to a prepared Premiere or another live stream. YouTube describes this as a post-stream audience handoff—not a way to restart the broadcast that just ended. Set up the destination before relying on the handoff. Manage live stream settings
