First find where the picture goes black: in the OBS preview, in an OBS local recording, or only in the YouTube Live output. If OBS preview is black, check the active scene and capture source before changing YouTube settings. If preview and a local recording look right but YouTube is black, troubleshoot the live-output path separately; the available official guidance does not establish one universal YouTube-only fix.
Identify where the black screen appears
Check the OBS preview, then make a short local recording and compare it with the YouTube live output. This separates a capture problem from a problem that appears later in the output path.
- Black in the OBS preview: Start with the scene, source visibility, capture mode, and application compatibility.
- Preview looks right but the local recording is black: Check that OBS is recording the intended scene and sources, and confirm the correct output is being recorded.
- Preview and recording look right, but YouTube is black: Treat this as a stream-only issue. Check that OBS is sending the intended live program and gather an OBS log and platform details rather than assuming the capture source is at fault.
For a useful diagnosis, note your operating system and version, OBS version, source type, whether the computer has more than one GPU, and whether the issue affects the whole scene or just one application or video player.
Fix a black OBS preview
1. Confirm the scene and source
Select the scene you intend to stream. In its Sources list, make sure the intended source is present and enabled, is not hidden behind an opaque source, and targets the right game, window, or display. Capture-specific-window modes require the target application to be running and selected. OBS documents Fullscreen, Capture specific window, and hotkey modes for Game Capture; their behavior differs, so check the mode and target rather than assuming all capture sources work alike: OBS Game Capture troubleshooting and OBS Game Capture guide.

2. Match the capture method to the content
Use Game Capture for supported games. Some games or applications cannot be hooked successfully; OBS recommends trying Window Capture for known incompatible cases, often with the application set to windowed or borderless fullscreen. For ordinary desktop capture, Display Capture can help determine whether the problem is specific to Game Capture, but it is not a universal fix for every application or protected video. 3. Check multi-GPU assignment and platform version
On a system with integrated and high-performance graphics, GPU selection can affect capture. OBS advises that both OBS and the game should generally use the high-performance GPU for Game Capture. Laptop Display Capture behavior can depend on Windows and OBS versions: the newer method described in OBS’s laptop guide requires Windows 10 version 1903 or later and OBS 27 or later. Do not apply old GPU-switching steps indiscriminately; follow the current OBS laptop troubleshooting guide for your capture type and versions.

4. Temporarily disable overlays and hook-based utilities
Close overlays, FPS counters, and other programs that hook into the target application, then test again. OBS specifically calls out RivaTuner Statistics Server and MSI Afterburner as common Game Capture conflicts. If you use a newer RTSS version, OBS documents an OBS-compatible setting; consult its Game Capture troubleshooting page. Re-enable tools one at a time after testing to identify a conflict.
5. Try administrator mode only for a specific game
Some games may require OBS to run as administrator for Game Capture. Use this as a temporary diagnostic when the other checks point to an application-specific capture issue, not as a default setting. If elevation does not help, return OBS to normal permissions. OBS lists this among its Game Capture troubleshooting steps.

6. Account for fullscreen games that stop rendering
A fullscreen game may stop drawing while minimized or after you alt-tab, leaving its capture black even though the source is configured correctly. Keep the game visible while testing, use another monitor if available, or make a test recording while it is in the foreground. OBS describes this behavior in its Game Capture troubleshooting guide.
If only a video player is black
If the desktop or other windows appear but a browser or video-player rectangle is black, the issue may be specific to playback or browser rendering rather than the whole OBS scene. YouTube’s help page discusses hardware acceleration while troubleshooting a green video-player screen, but that does not establish disabling acceleration as a guaranteed OBS fix: YouTube video playback troubleshooting.

You can test a browser setting change as a reversible diagnostic, restarting the browser and checking the player again. Do not assume this will make every video capturable: playback restrictions may apply, and changing rendering settings is not a way to bypass them.

When the OBS preview and a local recording both show the expected picture, avoid repeatedly changing capture settings without evidence. Confirm that the intended scene is live and compare the YouTube output with the local recording. If only the stream is black, preserve that distinction while collecting the OBS log, operating system and version, OBS version, encoder and output settings, and details of the source. Those details are needed to narrow down an output-path problem; the official guidance cited here does not establish a single YouTube-specific cure.

Check that the computer can handle the scene and output
A computer meeting OBS’s baseline requirements is not guaranteed to handle every combination of resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. OBS recommends assessing those settings and workload when evaluating system capability. Its listed baselines include Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU, or macOS 11 or later; these are compatibility requirements, not performance guarantees.
