To make an OBS-based YouTube stream reconnect after a brief interruption, enable Settings → Advanced → Automatically Reconnect in OBS and configure its retry count and initial retry delay. Then check YouTube Live Control Room’s auto-start and auto-stop settings, verify the stream URL and key, and test the setup before leaving it unattended. OBS reconnects its encoder output; it cannot restore a crashed computer or guarantee that YouTube will reopen an event YouTube has already ended.
What “automatic restart” can—and cannot—do
A 24/7 stream can fail at different points, and the right recovery depends on which one failed:
- OBS or its source stops: OBS cannot reconnect while the encoder process or computer is no longer running.
- The network connection drops: OBS can retry its streaming output when it is running and connectivity returns. That does not repair a continuing ISP outage or every problem along the network path.
- YouTube ends the event: An encoder retry is not a guarantee that the same YouTube event will resume. OBS documents reconnecting its output; YouTube documents event start and end controls separately. Treat same-event recovery after a long outage as uncertain and test your own configuration.
These are distinct behaviors, not one universal restart switch. YouTube’s auto-start setting can let an encoder start an event, but it does not restore a failed network connection.
Enable OBS automatic reconnect
- In OBS, open Settings → Advanced.
- Find the Automatically Reconnect option and enable it.
- Set the retry count and initial retry delay to suit the interruption window you can tolerate. OBS does not have one retry count or delay that applies to every installation; check the values in your installed version.
- Apply the settings and run a test interruption while watching OBS and YouTube Live Control Room.
OBS’s output API describes a maximum retry count and starting wait duration; the wait doubles on each retry. Therefore, attempts are not necessarily spaced at a fixed interval. Choose settings with that backoff in mind rather than assuming OBS will retry at the same pace throughout.

Check YouTube’s stream and event settings
Review auto-start and auto-stop
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room for the stream and review its auto-start and auto-stop settings. Auto-start allows the encoder to start the event; auto-stop allows the encoder to stop it. Reusing stream settings copies these selections, so verify them when setting up a reused stream. These controls govern event behavior, not network recovery.
Verify the encoder connection details
Confirm that OBS is using the intended YouTube service, server URL, and stream key. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a stream URL and key. If OBS reports a startup error, retrieve the current key in Live Control Room and update the encoder; YouTube identifies an outdated key as a recovery item to check.

YouTube’s encoder instructions say to stop sending content from the encoder to end a stream. For scheduled streams, Live Control Room also provides an End Stream action. Do not confuse an intentional event end with a temporary encoder disconnect.
Test before relying on unattended recovery
- Start the stream and confirm the picture and audio appear on the YouTube watch page and that Live Control Room reports healthy stream status.
- Simulate a brief interruption—for example, stop the primary encoder or temporarily disconnect its Ethernet cable—then restore it.
- Observe whether OBS retries, whether Live Control Room still considers the event live, and what viewers see during and after the interruption.
- If you use a backup encoder, test the handoff too. YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup.
Repeat the test with the conditions that matter to your channel. Recovery can depend on the OBS version, stream settings, outage duration, and whether YouTube has ended the event. The test shows how your configuration behaves; it is not a guarantee against every future interruption.

Troubleshoot repeated disconnects

OBS notes that dropped frames may indicate an unstable connection or insufficient upload capacity, and that connection problems can originate outside OBS. If changing encoder settings does not resolve the interruption, investigate the network path and security or VPN software that may interfere with the connection.
