You can automate a 24/7 YouTube stream by running FFmpeg on a computer or cloud machine, sending its output to YouTube’s live ingest, and arranging monitoring and recovery around the process. Use RTMPS, choose a bitrate your actual connection can sustain, and test the complete setup before relying on it. For a continuous broadcast, make a separate recording if you need a complete archive: YouTube warns that a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
How the 24/7 FFmpeg setup works
FFmpeg reads a video file or playlist, encodes or remuxes the media, and publishes a continuous feed to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. YouTube receives that feed and distributes viewer-compatible versions. The FFmpeg process and the YouTube broadcast are related but distinct parts of the workflow: YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes a stream resource as the feed sent to YouTube, with ingest details such as primary and backup URLs, resolution, and frame rate.
A direct setup does not require a managed streaming platform. You need a host that can reach your source media and maintain a stable upload connection, FFmpeg, a YouTube channel eligible to stream, and the ingest details and stream key for the broadcast.
Check YouTube eligibility and content rights first
Channel requirements
YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to go live. Content must also follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms. See YouTube’s live-streaming requirements.

Rights for continuous playback
You are responsible for having the rights needed to stream your content, including music rights for worldwide exploitation, and for following applicable laws and requirements in the stream territory. Owning a media file or having a copy of a song does not by itself grant streaming rights. Review YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions before running a 24/7 music or video channel.
Choose where FFmpeg will run
Local computer
A local machine offers direct access to locally stored files and hands-on control. It also means the computer, power, network, and FFmpeg process must remain available for the stream to continue. If you are in India, assess your own sustained upload capacity, connection stability, power continuity, latency to the selected ingest endpoint, and budget. There is no single India-wide upload threshold, ISP, power-backup requirement, or hosting choice established here; test from the location and connection you will actually use.
Cloud virtual machine
A cloud VM moves the FFmpeg process off your home computer, but you still need to configure the machine, provide its media files, protect the stream key, and monitor the process and storage. Compare options using operational control, media location, sustained upload performance, recovery, and total cost; availability and prices depend on the provider and region.

Managed streaming pipeline
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a separate managed architecture: it accepts RTMP or SRT input and produces HLS or DASH output. Its documentation gives FFmpeg as an example of a program that sends input to the service. This is not a required component for sending FFmpeg directly to YouTube. See the Live Stream API overview.
Set YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingest and advises selecting quality that works reliably with your measured upload connection. Its current guidance recommends CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval (not more than 4 seconds), and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video with AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Check the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the full codec-specific ranges.
| H.264 input format | YouTube recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations, not guarantees that an ISP connection will sustain the stream. Run an upload speed test and leave enough headroom for variation; test with similar motion and audio to the real broadcast, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube says it detects encoder settings in Live Control Room and transcodes live feeds into viewer output formats.

Configure FFmpeg and start the broadcast
The exact command depends on whether you are encoding, copying a compatible stream, looping one file, or assembling a playlist. Do not treat a generic command as a guaranteed unattended 24/7 solution: the right input options, loop behavior, encoder, and reconnect policy depend on your media and FFmpeg build. The official FFmpeg protocols documentation describes protocol options; test your specific invocation before relying on it.
- Prepare the source. Verify the media plays through its full duration and has the intended resolution, frame rate, aspect ratio, and audio. If using a playlist, check the transitions and total run behavior rather than assuming the files will repeat as intended.
- Create or schedule the YouTube live broadcast. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create the broadcast and select the stream configuration. Channel eligibility applies before you can go live.
- Copy the ingest details privately. Use the server URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. YouTube’s API distinguishes primary and backup ingest URLs, but configure the endpoint presented for your stream. Never publish a stream key in a command, screenshot, repository, or article; treat it like a password.
- Configure FFmpeg output. Set the output protocol and server endpoint to match YouTube’s displayed ingest details, and enter the stream key securely. Use RTMPS when offered. YouTube notes that a client may connect but fail to receive a useful response if it attempts cleartext RTMP against an endpoint expecting RTMPS; see its RTMPS ingest guide.
- Set the encoding profile. Choose a supported codec and resolution, set CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and select the bitrate for your resolution and frame rate. Match audio to the source and use AAC or MP3 as appropriate.
- Start a private or unlisted test first. Check playback, audio, aspect ratio, dropped frames, and Live Control Room stream health using a test with representative movement and sound. Do not move to an unattended public run until the full input-to-viewer path has been checked.
- Keep the process observable. Arrange a way to see whether FFmpeg is running and whether it is producing output. As general implementation advice, plan for process restarts, disk-space monitoring if recording locally, restricted access to keys, and a recovery procedure that you have actually tested. No particular command, watchdog, or service manager guarantees uptime.
Plan for outages and recordings
Recovery is part of automation
A 24/7 stream can stop because the host reboots, the network drops, FFmpeg exits, storage fills, or YouTube rejects or loses the feed. Decide who or what will notice, how the process will restart, and how you will confirm that YouTube is receiving video and audio again. A restart mechanism can help recover a failed process, but it does not prove that the ingest, media, or broadcast is healthy; validate the whole chain.

Keep a separate archive for a full 24-hour record
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a complete recording, configure a separate local archive and monitor available storage. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Common problems and fixes
- FFmpeg connects but YouTube shows no usable feed: Confirm the protocol and server URL shown in Live Control Room. If the endpoint expects RTMPS, do not send cleartext RTMP; verify the stream key is for the active broadcast.
- Stream health reports instability or dropped frames: Measure upload performance at the host and lower resolution or bitrate until the connection can sustain it reliably. Repeat the test with representative content; a speed-test peak is not proof of sustained capacity.
- Viewers get video but no audio, or vice versa: Check the selected input streams and output mapping, codec compatibility, and the media itself. Test playback through the entire YouTube ingest path before leaving the stream unattended.
- The stream stops when the computer or VM restarts: Ensure the FFmpeg job starts again after reboot and confirm the new process reconnects successfully. A restart policy alone does not verify YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
- The source ends and the broadcast goes blank or exits: Validate the chosen loop or playlist behavior with the actual FFmpeg build and input files. The appropriate method differs by source; do not assume a one-file loop setting also handles a playlist.
- The full stream is missing from YouTube’s archive: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. Keep your own recording if a complete archive is important.
Monetization is separate from keeping the stream live
Automation does not make a channel eligible for monetization or guarantee earnings. YouTube’s current Partner Program overview describes a full eligibility path of 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the prior 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the prior 90 days, plus other policy, account, and review conditions. Watch hours from livestreams that are unlisted, deleted, or not converted to VOD are excluded. See YouTube Partner Program eligibility.
Eligible channels may have live-stream ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and memberships available, but ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube loop without maintaining an FFmpeg host, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. The process is: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera. Read more at StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
