YouTube’s event-level Auto-start setting can start a broadcast when an encoder feed returns, but it cannot reopen Streamlabs Desktop. If Streamlabs itself exits, automatic recovery requires a separately configured operating-system process supervisor, and the broadcast’s state must still be checked after the app relaunches.
First identify what failed
“The stream stopped” can mean three different things. Identify which one happened before changing settings; each needs a different recovery mechanism.

| What happened | What may help | What it cannot do |
|---|---|---|
| The internet connection dropped, but Streamlabs Desktop stayed open. | Streamlabs may reconnect when the connection returns. Check the app’s status and the YouTube event. | Connection recovery cannot reopen Streamlabs if its process has exited. |
| Streamlabs Desktop crashed or was closed. | A separately configured operating-system process supervisor may relaunch the application after it exits. | YouTube’s Auto-start setting does not launch the desktop application or guarantee that Streamlabs restores its previous live session. |
| The encoder feed returned, but the YouTube broadcast did not begin. | Check Auto-start on the specific YouTube event being used, then verify its live status. | Auto-start does not recover a crashed encoder application. |
What YouTube Auto-start does—and does not do
YouTube Live Control Room has Auto-start and Auto-stop controls. YouTube describes the effect this way: “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” In other words, the setting governs how YouTube responds to an encoder feed; it is not an application watchdog.

Set up the YouTube event and Streamlabs correctly
- Choose the event you intend to stream to. Streamlabs Desktop supports signing in with a YouTube account and using its Go Live flow to create an event. Alternatively, create the event in YouTube’s dashboard, then select it from Streamlabs Desktop’s Go Live window and confirm.
- Check that event’s Auto-start setting. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the settings for the event you will use and confirm whether Auto-start is enabled. Check Auto-stop too if you want the encoder feed ending to control the broadcast’s stop behavior.
- Verify the stream key and destination. If you use a stream key rather than an account sign-in flow, confirm Streamlabs is using the key for the intended YouTube event. A correct key and selected event matter when reconnecting or relaunching.
- Test the normal start flow before relying on recovery. Start the event from Streamlabs, then confirm the broadcast appears as live in YouTube Live Control Room. This confirms the ordinary encoder-to-event path; it does not prove that a crash will restore itself.
How to relaunch Streamlabs after the application exits
If the application process crashes, a process supervisor configured separately from Streamlabs is the layer that can notice the exit and attempt to relaunch it. This is a general operating-system approach, not a Streamlabs-specific automatic restart feature. The official Streamlabs guidance cited here does not establish a supported supervisor recipe, launch command, or guarantee that the prior session will be restored.
- Configure a supervisor for the Streamlabs Desktop process. Choose an operating-system process-monitoring method that can detect when the application exits and launch it again. Configure it independently; there is no Streamlabs setting documented here that performs this job.
- Avoid assuming the old session resumed. After relaunch, check that Streamlabs is open, the intended scene and YouTube event are selected, and the encoder is sending a feed.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the broadcast is live and receiving the expected feed before treating recovery as complete. A newly launched process and an active YouTube broadcast are separate states.
- Verify the result under your own setup. A supervisor may relaunch the app, but exact Streamlabs launch behavior and automatic restoration of a live session are not established here. Do not rely on it as the only safeguard without checking how your configuration behaves.
Troubleshoot a stream that will not start or reconnect
These checks address go-live or connection trouble; they do not add automatic crash relaunch.

- Streamlabs opens, but YouTube does not receive the stream: check that the correct YouTube event is selected and that Streamlabs has the right stream key. If you use account sign-in, signing out and back in is among Streamlabs’ suggested troubleshooting steps.
- The connection or go-live attempt fails: Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guidance also suggests running the application as administrator and reviewing selected output and connection settings for applicable failures.
- The app repeatedly crashes: do not treat clearing app data as a routine restart fix. Streamlabs says clearing cache and restarting can wipe user data; deleting the user-data directory can require signing in again and rebuilding settings and scene collections. Preserve or understand the configuration impact before considering a data reset.
- The app relaunched, but viewers cannot see a live broadcast: check the encoder status in Streamlabs and the broadcast state in Live Control Room. The process relaunch alone does not confirm that YouTube has started the event.
