For a Sony Android TV or Google TV, turn on the set, point its remote at the TV’s illumination or status LED, and hold the remote’s POWER button for about five seconds, or until a power-off message appears. The TV should restart; give it about a minute to come back. This restart does not erase saved settings. If it does not work, try the TV’s restart menu or a power reset before considering a factory reset.
Which Sony TVs do these steps apply to?
Sony’s instructions here cover Android TV and Google TV models, not every Sony television. Menu labels and button behavior can vary by model and software version. If you have another type of Sony TV, use the power-reset instructions for that type and your model instead. See Sony’s restart and power-reset guidance and its model-specific restart instructions.

A restart is a reasonable first step for a frozen or unusually slow TV, or issues such as no picture while sound is present, remote-control problems, or slow apps. It may help, but it is not a guaranteed fix.

How to restart the TV with its remote
- Turn the TV on and point the supplied remote toward the TV’s illumination or status LED.
- Press and hold the remote’s POWER button for about five seconds, or until a power-off message appears. Depending on the model, a screen with Cancel or Restart may appear after holding the button for three seconds or longer. Choose Restart if offered.
- Wait about one minute for the TV to restart. If it turns off but does not come back on automatically, press POWER to turn it on.
Before restarting an Android TV or Google TV, disconnect any external USB storage device, as Sony advises in its restart guidance.

How to restart from the settings menu
If the remote restart is unavailable or the menu is easier to reach, use the path shown on your TV. Sony lists these examples; they are alternatives, not a single path available on every model:
- Quick Settings → Settings → System → Restart → Restart
- HOME → Settings → About → Restart → Restart
- HOME → Settings → Device Preferences → About → Restart → Restart
If you do not see one of these labels, check your model’s instructions rather than assuming a setting is missing or using a different reset option.

What to do if the TV will not restart
Try a power reset
- Turn the TV off.
- Unplug its power cord and leave it disconnected for two minutes.
- While it is unplugged, press and release the TV’s physical POWER button. Sony says the button is commonly underneath the set or on its back; its location varies, so consult your model manual if you cannot find it.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn the TV on.
Sony notes that some Google TV models offer another model-dependent option: hold the TV’s physical POWER button for about 40 seconds or until the TV turns off. Follow the instructions for your specific model rather than treating this as a universal procedure. Details are in Sony’s power-reset guidance.
A power reset is not the same as a factory reset: it disconnects the TV from power but does not erase customized settings or account information.

Restart, power reset, or factory reset?
| Action | When to use it | Effect on saved data |
|---|---|---|
| Remote or menu restart | First step when the TV is slow, frozen, or behaving unexpectedly and the controls are accessible. | Does not erase saved settings or information. |
| Power reset | If a restart fails or the TV remains unresponsive; follow model-specific directions. | Disconnects power; it is not a data-erasing reset. |
| Factory data reset | A later troubleshooting step if restart and power reset do not resolve the issue, or when Sony specifically instructs you to use it. | Erases customized settings and data, including account information, apps, channels, and wired or Wi-Fi network settings. |
A factory reset is more disruptive and should not be confused with restarting. Sony describes it as restoring the TV to its original factory settings; review its factory-reset instructions before proceeding. Sony also describes a forced factory reset as a last resort for situations such as an inaccessible menu or no remote.

Work out whether the symptom affects the TV menus, one particular app, or an external input. That distinction helps narrow the next step: a problem confined to one app is different from a fault that also affects the TV’s own menus or picture. Follow Sony’s troubleshooting for the specific symptom; its guidance covers picture, sound, playback, and app issues and may point to a software update or service depending on the problem. Start with Sony’s guidance on restarting and updating Android TV or Google TV or its restart and troubleshooting page. If the issue continues, follow the applicable diagnostic steps or contact Sony product support.
