If a Samsung Family Hub refrigerator’s screen is stuck, slow, or unable to open apps after an update, restart the Family Hub display first—not the entire refrigerator. Use Settings > About Family Hub > Restart if the touchscreen responds. If it does not, use the display switch inside the top of the upper-right door. These steps restart the screen; they are not a general refrigerator power reset.
First check whether the problem is the screen or the refrigerator
Check whether the refrigerator still has power and is cooling. If the interior lights do not turn on when you open the door and the appliance is not cooling, follow Samsung’s blank control panel or Family Hub screen troubleshooting for a no-power problem rather than treating it as a failed display update.

A Family Hub display restart and a power cycle of the whole refrigerator are different actions. Samsung’s U.S. guidance gives a 60-second power cycle for certain non-Family-Hub blank-panel situations and selected power or voltage error codes; that is not a universal remedy for a failed firmware update. For an error code, photograph or write it down and follow the instructions for that code and model. Restart the Family Hub display
If the touchscreen responds
- On the Family Hub screen, open Settings > About Family Hub > Restart.
- Allow the screen to restart, then check whether it boots normally and the affected apps work.
Samsung Electronics Service gives this menu route in its Family Hub update guidance, dated December 13, 2023, for problems such as failure to boot, very slow operation, or apps not running after an over-the-network update. Menu names can vary by model, region, or software version, so the route may not appear exactly this way on every refrigerator. See Samsung’s Family Hub update guidance.

If the touchscreen does not respond
- Open the refrigerator’s upper-right door.
- Find the display power switch inside the top of the door and use it to restart the Family Hub screen.
- On some models, the switch may be red and behind a cover.
Samsung identifies this built-in switch as the display reset control in its U.S. blank-screen instructions. It restarts the display; it should not be described as a reset of the refrigerator’s cooling system. The reviewed instructions do not specify a universal waiting time for an update-related display restart.
When to consider a factory data reset
Consider a factory data reset only if restarting the Family Hub display has not resolved the problem. This is a more destructive step than a restart: Samsung U.S. says a reset deletes all data, and reset guidance warns that error-code history and diagnostic information can be lost. Photograph any displayed error code before proceeding.

Samsung Korea’s post-update guidance places factory reset after restart fails and warns that data may not be recoverable unless the refrigerator is connected to the relevant Samsung account. Confirm the instructions for your model and region before continuing. Samsung’s U.S. guidance says refrigerator resets are rarely recommended except in specified troubleshooting circumstances; see How to reset your Samsung refrigerator. Do not confuse the general five-minute wait described in that reset guidance with the Family Hub display restart procedure.
If the update problem continues
If the screen still will not boot or the same fault returns after the appropriate restart—or after a reset you chose to perform—contact Samsung support or an authorized service provider for your region and model. Share the model number, what happened after the update, and any error code you recorded. Samsung’s guidance for certain codes, including codes 41/42 with flashing blue interior lights, calls for a Family Hub reboot using the inside switch and service if the issue continues.

Do not improvise a firmware reflash, downgrade, or USB recovery: the cited Samsung instructions do not provide those procedures. Samsung’s update article covers a particular rollout and is not a universal recovery map for every Family Hub model or software version.
