How to Restart a Podcast Livestream Automatically if OBS Crashes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To restart a podcast livestream after OBS crashes, use an external process supervisor to detect that OBS has exited and relaunch it with OBS’s --startstreaming launch parameter. OBS’s automatic reconnect is for a lost stream connection while OBS remains open; it cannot restart an OBS process that has stopped. Configure and test the whole recovery path before relying on it during a broadcast.

First, identify what stopped working

A dropped connection and a crashed application need different recovery methods. OBS’s stream-connection guide describes dropped frames and intermittent disconnections as network-path problems between the computer and the remote ingest server. If OBS is still running, use its reconnect settings and troubleshoot the connection. If OBS has exited, an external supervisor must relaunch it.

Set OBS up to start streaming when it launches

OBS documents --startstreaming as a launch parameter that automatically starts streaming. It is a startup instruction, not a crash monitor: you still need an external supervisor to notice an unexpected exit and launch OBS again. The OBS documentation also describes launch parameters for selecting a scene collection, profile and scene. See the OBS launch-parameter guide.

  1. Configure OBS for the intended broadcast. Select the correct service and account or event, stream key, profile, scene collection and starting scene. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.
  2. Try the launch parameter manually. Close OBS, then launch it with --startstreaming and verify that the correct scene and destination go live. Do this at a safe time and confirm the broadcast appears where expected before configuring unattended restarts.
  3. Use the instructions for your operating system. On Windows, the OBS guide explains adding arguments to a shortcut. For an automated launch, set the task’s “Start in…” working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe; the exact executable path depends on the installation. On macOS, OBS documents passing arguments with open -a "OBS" --args, including from an Automator workflow. Neither shortcut launches nor these commands monitor for a crash on their own.
  4. Configure an external supervisor. Choose an operating-system facility or maintained third-party supervisor that can start OBS at boot and restart it when its process exits unexpectedly. Configure a delay and a finite retry or backoff policy. Make sure it checks for an existing OBS instance before starting another, so a slow launch does not create duplicate instances. OBS’s launch guide does not prescribe a particular supervisor or guarantee loop prevention.
  5. For Linux, follow the supervisor’s platform-specific documentation. The reviewed OBS launch guide does not provide a systemd or other Linux service recipe. Do not assume that the OBS launch parameter alone provides process monitoring.

Test recovery before depending on it

A successful OBS relaunch does not guarantee that the destination platform will keep the same live event active or accept an encoder reconnect. YouTube recommends testing before a stream and monitoring stream health during it. Confirm behavior with your actual service and account configuration rather than assuming the event will resume.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Confirm a normal manual stream reaches the intended event.
  2. Confirm launching OBS with --startstreaming starts the correct broadcast.
  3. At a safe time, simulate a controlled OBS process exit and verify that the supervisor brings back exactly one OBS instance.
  4. Check that the destination platform resumes the intended broadcast and that the stream is healthy.
  5. Repeat a controlled test with the internet unavailable at the moment OBS relaunches. A process restart cannot restore a network connection or guarantee the platform-side event state.
  6. After recovery, review stream health and OBS logs. If OBS stayed open and only the connection failed, troubleshoot the network, ingest server, bitrate, drivers, firewall or other connection factors instead of adding a crash-restart loop.

For encoder configuration and event testing, consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrates and its guidance to check stream health. Those settings help configure a stream; they do not perform OBS crash recovery.

Know what source-recovery plugins can and cannot do

Freeze Watchdog’s project documentation says it can restart selected frozen, blank or unresponsive sources. That addresses a source problem while OBS is open, not a crashed OBS process. The project reports testing with OBS Studio 32.1.1 on 64-bit Windows and Linux and warns that compatibility with nearby versions is not guaranteed. Treat these as claims from the project itself, not an OBS endorsement or independent compatibility guarantee. Read the Freeze Watchdog documentation before installing it.
