Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf MediaMTX launches your YouTube publisher through a path’s runOnInit hook, set runOnInitRestart: yes. MediaMTX will relaunch that command when it exits. This handles an exited publisher process; it does not establish that a still-running but hung process will be detected, or that YouTube will always resume the same live event after a reconnect.
Set MediaMTX to restart the publishing command
Put the restart option alongside the path-specific runOnInit command that starts your publisher, such as FFmpeg. The documented configuration pattern is:

paths:
your_path:
runOnInit: <your existing publisher command>
runOnInitRestart: yes
Replace your_path and the command placeholder with the path name and working command from your configuration. Keep the input URL, codec options, and YouTube destination and key appropriate to your setup. The exact FFmpeg command depends on the source, operating system, codecs, and output; there is no universal command established here. Check the option names and behavior against the MediaMTX version you have installed, because the linked documentation tracks the rolling main branch rather than a release-tagged manual. See the MediaMTX hooks documentation and configuration template.

Treat the YouTube stream key as a secret. Configure the publisher with the correct YouTube Live server URL and stream key; YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to find and use them. Avoid sharing a command or configuration file containing an active key.

Know which kind of disconnect you are handling
MediaMTX has several hooks and availability options. They respond to different events and are not interchangeable:
| Mechanism | What triggers it | What it does |
|---|---|---|
runOnInitRestart: yes |
The command started by runOnInit exits. |
Restarts that command. This is the relevant setting for relaunching an exited publisher. |
runOnDisconnect |
A client disconnects from MediaMTX. | Runs a command for that client-disconnect event. It is not the restart switch for a runOnInit process. |
runOnOffline and runOnOnline |
A MediaMTX path changes offline or online state. | Run commands in response to path state changes; they do not, by themselves, mean an exited publisher is supervised and restarted. |
alwaysAvailable |
The path’s source is offline. | Can keep MediaMTX readers supplied with an offline segment. It does not restart the upstream publisher or ensure YouTube continues receiving it. |
The hooks documentation describes runOnDisconnect as running a command when a client disconnects from the server. For path-state behavior, see the configuration template; for the offline-segment feature, see MediaMTX always-available.

Test the reconnect with the intended YouTube event
A local process restart and a successful YouTube recovery are separate outcomes. YouTube documents encoder URLs, keys, stream settings, and auto-start/auto-stop controls, but those controls are not a blanket guarantee that every interruption reconnects to the same viewer-facing live event. Test the behavior on the event and settings you plan to use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Confirm the publisher starts from the configured MediaMTX path and that the YouTube Live server URL and stream key are correct.
- Use a test stream or another appropriate test event. Stop or interrupt the publisher in a controlled way and confirm MediaMTX relaunches the command after it exits.
- Check YouTube’s stream preview and watch page to see whether video and audio return and whether the event behaves as intended.
- Monitor audio and video during the test and review YouTube’s live streaming tips. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover and continuously monitoring the stream.
YouTube’s stream settings guidance covers event controls. A successful command restart does not prove that the particular event resumed, so judge recovery from the preview and watch page as well as the process status.

Troubleshoot when the stream does not recover
- The publisher exits but does not relaunch: Verify that the command is actually configured under the path’s
runOnInitand thatrunOnInitRestart: yesis set for that path. Check the spelling and confirm compatibility with the deployed MediaMTX version’s documentation. - The command remains running but stops sending media: The documented restart behavior is for a command that exits. The official pages cited here do not establish that it detects a hung process. Inspect the publisher and input separately; do not assume this option is a general health check.
- You used
runOnDisconnect: That hook responds to a client disconnecting from MediaMTX. Use the restart setting for an exitedrunOnInitpublisher instead. - MediaMTX readers see an offline slate, but YouTube is still down:
alwaysAvailablecan provide an offline segment to MediaMTX readers; it does not reconnect the publisher to YouTube. - The process restarted, but the YouTube event did not recover as expected: Recheck the Live server URL, stream key, event settings, preview, and watch page. Test the same event configuration you intend to use; reconnect behavior is not guaranteed for every scenario by the cited YouTube guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
